A Relational Multi-Schema Data Model and Query Language for Full Support of Schema Versioning?
A Relational Multi-Schema Data Model and Query Language for Full Support of Schema Versioning? Fabio Grandi CSITE-CNR and DEIS, Alma Mater Studiorum – Universita` di Bologna Viale Risorgimento 2, 40136 Bologna, Italy, email: [email protected] Abstract. Schema versioning is a powerful tool not only to ensure reuse of data and continued support of legacy applications after schema changes, but also to add a new degree of freedom to database designers, application developers and final users. In fact, different schema versions actually allow one to represent, in full relief, different points of view over the modelled application reality. The key to such an improvement is the adop- tion of a multi-pool implementation solution, rather that the single-pool solution usually endorsed by other authors. In this paper, we show some of the application potentialities of the multi-pool approach in schema versioning through a concrete example, introduce a simple but comprehensive logical storage model for the mapping of a multi-schema database onto a standard relational database and use such a model to define and exem- plify a multi-schema query language, called MSQL, which allows one to exploit the full potentialities of schema versioning under the multi-pool approach. 1 Introduction However careful and accurate the initial design may have been, a database schema is likely to undergo changes and revisions after implementation. In order to avoid the loss of data after schema changes, schema evolution has been introduced to provide (partial) automatic recov- ery of the extant data by adapting them to the new schema. -

Tools for Managing Mysql 1
Tools for Managing MySQL 1 Tools for Managing MySQL The MySQL database engine comes with command-line tools to manage the data structures, user security and to add, drop and modify records in the databases. It's worthwhile to learn enough about these tools, since you can be assured they'll be available in every installation, and “one quick change” is much faster in a text-based tool. However, for much of your daily work, you may find that some graphical 3rd party tools make the work easier, more productive and more pleasant. Moving to MySQL means that you'll need to learn to work with the tools included with MySQL database for maintenance, security, monitoring and data access. It's wise to get familiar with the basic set of command-line tools, as you never know when you may find yourself with a minimal installation to manage or a slow dial-up connection to your server. You will also want to consider some of the very attractive add-on tools that can make the job easier. This chapter starts by covering the basic tools, and then shows some of the other utilities available for downloading. At a minimum, programmers should be familiar enough with a command-line interface to feel comfortable using it for some work. Some will find that the shell interface is all that's needed. A quick and simple change can be easily implemented that way. However, when learning a new tool, nothing beats the “explorability” of a graphical interface to discover what sorts of features and options are available. -
Project Proposal a Comparative Analysis of the LAMP (Linux, Apache, Mysql and PHP) and Microsoft .NET (Windows XP, IIS, Microsof
Project Proposal A comparative analysis of the LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP) and Microsoft .NET (Windows XP, IIS, Microsoft SQL Server and ASP.NET) frameworks within the challenging domain of limited connectivity and internet speeds as presented by African countries. By: Christo Crampton Supervisor: Madeleine Wright 1.) Overview of the research With the recent releases of ASP.NET and PHP 5, there has been much debate over which technology is better. I propose to develop and implement an industry strength online journal management system (AJOL – African Journals OnLine) using both frameworks, and use this as the basis for comparative analysis of the two frameworks against eachother. 2.) Product Specification AJOL is an existing website ( www.ajol.org ) which acts as an aggregation agent for a number of publishers of African journals who wish to publish their journals online and of course for researchers looking for information. The existing system is based on the OJS (Open Journal System) developed by Berkeley University. The system consists of a user frontend – where users can browse and search the contents of the database online – and an administration frontend – where publishers can log in and manage their journals on the database by performing tasks such as adding new abstracts or editing existing abstracts. It is currently developed in PHP with a MySQL backend. The proposed system will consist of an online user interface, and online administration interface for publishers, as well as an offline administration interface for publishers. The online and offline administration interfaces are complementary and publishers can use either or both according to their preference. -
