As a guitarist, A & R man, engineer, producer, songwriting partner of Otis Redding, Eddie Floyd and a dozen others and founding member of both Booker T. and the MG’s and The Mar-Keys, Cropper was literally involved in virtually every record issued by Stax from the fall of 1961 through year end 1970.Such credits assure Cropper of an honored place in the soul music hall of fame. As co-writer of (Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The Bay, Knock On Wood and In The Midnight Hour, Cropper is in line for immortality. Born on October 21, 1941 on a farm near Dora, Missouri, Steve Cropper moved with his family to Memphis at the age of nine. In Missouri he had been exposed to a wealth of country music and little else. In his adopted home, his thirsty ears amply drank of the fountain of Gospel, R & B and nascent Rock and Roll that thundered over the airwaves of both black and white Memphis radio. Bit by the music bug, Cropper acquired his first mail order guitar at the age of 14. Personal guitar heroes included Tal Farlow, Chuck Berry, Jimmy Reed, Chet Atkins, Lowman Pauling of the Five Royales and Billy Butler of the Bill Doggett band.

  • Polk Salad" Association Upon Its Annual Festival and Pageant That Preserves and Continues the Delicious Legacy of Poke Sallet
SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION 64 By Yager A RESOLUTION to honor and commend the Tennessee "Polk Salad" Association upon its annual festival and pageant that preserves and continues the delicious legacy of poke sallet. WHEREAS, it is fitting that this General Assembly should pay tribute to those worthy organizations that work with purpose and conviction to keep our Southern culture, especially Southern cuisine, alive for present and future generations; and WHEREAS, one such worthy organization is the Tennessee "Polk Salad" Association, which founded the Tennessee "Polk Salad" Pageant in memory of Violet Webb, who in bygone days picked and cooked poke sallet (correct spelling) for her family; and WHEREAS, the spelling of this "polk salad" pageant and festival mimics the spelling of the song Polk Salad Annie , which was written and performed by Tony Joe White and also popularized by Elvis Presley; and WHEREAS, poke sallet is a green that grows wild in the South along river banks and fence rows and in fields; "sallet" is a word used to describe a green food that must be cooked before being eaten; and WHEREAS, fondly known as “Spring Tonic” in the South, poke sallet must be parboiled in fresh water three times before being eaten and is usually prepared with bacon and/or eggs; and WHEREAS, although they are toxic to humans, poke berries can be used for ink or dye, and poke ink was used for some of the signatures on The Declaration of Independence; and WHEREAS, the first “Miss Polk Salad” crowned was Priscilla Martin of Rockwood in 2004; the first

  • Shakespeare on Film, Video & Stage
William Shakespeare on Film, Video and Stage Titles in bold red font with an asterisk (*) represent the crème de la crème – first choice titles in each category. These are the titles you’ll probably want to explore first. Titles in bold black font are the second- tier – outstanding films that are the next level of artistry and craftsmanship. Once you have experienced the top tier, these are where you should go next. They may not represent the highest achievement in each genre, but they are definitely a cut above the rest. Finally, the titles which are in a regular black font constitute the rest of the films within the genre. I would be the first to admit that some of these may actually be worthy of being “ranked” more highly, but it is a ridiculously subjective matter.
