Reflection and Emergence: Celebrating 20 years of the Academy for the Love of Learning and Leonard Bernstein’s 100th 201 AUGUST 25 8 1 Copyright © 2018 Academy for the Love of Learning, Inc. © Kate Russell About the Academy 2018 marks both The Academy for the Love of Learning’s 20th anniversary and the centennial of the birth of the 20th century musical giant Leonard Bernstein. The Academy shares a deep history with Leonard Bernstein, and ultimately was birthed from an intense collaboration between Bernstein and Academy founder and President Aaron Stern during the fnal decade of Bernstein’s life. Stern, then Dean of the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago, had a profound discovery about learning while observing how music students learned music. From that discovery, Stern recognized that a restoration of the human capacity to learn was essential not only to the revitalization of music, but all of education and more generally, Western culture itself. From this, Stern began to develop a body of work, pedagogy and learning methodologies that are now at the center of the Academy for the Love of Learning. Stern’s approach to learning found its counterpart in Bernstein’s vision for a better world and a lifelong commitment to sharing that vision through music. Stern’s clear conviction that by “taking the lid of learning, we can learn ourselves to a better world, individually and collectively” touched and inspired Bernstein deeply toward the end of his life. Bernstein invested in Stern enormously during that last decade of his life. Following Bernstein’s death in 1990, Stern developed further and implemented peripatetically the methodologies he frst began to explore while at the Conservatory. -

In the late 1900s David Randall and Lowell Weiner explored the unaccompanied clarinet duets in their dissertations “A Comprehensive Performance Project in Clarinet Literature with an Essay on the Clarinet Duet From ca.1715 to ca.1825” and “The Unaccompanied Clarinet Duet Repertoire from 1825 to the Present: An Annotated Catalogue”. However, unaccompanied duets for clarinet and another woodwind instrument are seldom mentioned in the academic literature and are rarely performed. In an attempt to fill the void, this research will provide a partial survey of this category. Because of the sheer volume of the duet literature, the scope of the study will be limited to original compositions entitled Sonata or Sonatina written for a pair of woodwind instruments which include at least one clarinet. Arrangements will be cited but not discussed. All of the works will be annotated, evaluated, graded by difficulty, and comparisons will be made between those with similar style. -

(Photo: Steven Richard Photography) The transition from silent to talking pictures in the late 1920s has provided gist for documentaries – Kevin Brownlow’s wonderful and definitive “Hollywood” (1980) – and dramatic tragedies – Sunset Boulevard (1950) – but certainly the most beloved is the musical comedy Singin’ in the Rain (1952). Although Betty Comden and Adolph Green adapted the musical in the 1980s from their 30-year-old film screenplay, it is a huge challenge presenting many of the purely cinematic tricks and effects on the live stage. In the iconic film sequence of Gene Kelly dancing with an umbrella, for example, separately recorded sound effects were dubbed in from uncredited assistant choreographer Gwen Verdon tap- dancing in water. Theatre by the Sea uses a clever set with real water streaming down from the rafters, credited to Kyle Dixon as scenic designer. The original film was a jukebox musical, produced by Arthur Freed with songs previously written by himself and Nacio Herb Brown. Even the title song, “Singin’ in the Rain,” was from a 1929 film, and most of the rest, including “You Are My Lucky Star” and “Good Morning,” are from 1930s films. Two songs, “Make ‘Em Laugh” and “Moses Supposes,” were written for the film by Comden and Green. (Photo: Steven Richard Photography) There are a ton of wink-wink references to the 1920s: the musical (like the film) opens with Hollywood gossip columnist “Dora Bailey” (Ellen Peterson) bearing a striking resemblance to the real-life Louella Parsons, a friendly knock at Sunset Boulevard that used Hedda Hopper, Parsons’ real-life rival.
