    REVIEW OF APPLIED ECONOMICS RAE Vol. 8, No. 1, (January-June 2012) THE DETERMINANTS OF ANNUAL EARNINGS FOR PGA PLAYERS UNDER THE NEW PGA’S FEDEX CUP SYSTEM Jonathan K Ohn*, William Bealing** and Dan Waeger*** Abstract: There have been numerous studies that examined the earnings determination of Major League Baseball (MLB) and National Football League (NFL) professional athletes, but relatively little attention has been paid to the earnings determination of professional golfers. The important difference between the two is: the earnings of MLB and NFL athletes are determined by past and expected future performance, while the earnings of professional golfers depend strictly on their current performance. In this paper, we reexamine the structure and determination of the PGA golfers’ tour earnings in the new era, which started with the introduction of the FedEx Cup Championship in 2007. We use two determination models – the first with a set of traditional skill variables, and the second with the skill variables along with two additional variables which reflect the monetary and psychological effect of a player’s timely performance at the majors, and the measure of a player’s consistency and persistency throughout the regular season. Overall, the second model appears to be a superior model, explaining the earnings determination of PGA players better.     2021 TOUR Championship Broadcast & Pre-Tournament Notes FedExCup Starting Strokes: For the Third consecutive season, the TOUR Championship is weighted by FedExCup Starting Strokes, with the format crowning a single champion; at the conclusion of the TOUR Championship, the player with the lowest score in relation to par over 72 holes combined with his FedExCup Starting Strokes will win the TOUR Championship and be crowned FedExCup champion. The FedExCup points leader after the first two Playoffs events will begin the TOUR Championship at 10-under par. The next four players will start at 8-under through 5-under, respectively.     T U M W P e ISOPAR Method Michael Stöckl, Peter Lamb & Martin Lames Faculty of Sports and Health Sciences Connollystrasse 32 80809 Munich Germany [email protected] [email protected] June 27, 2011 Abstract e ISOPAR method is a method for characterizing the difficulty of golf holes and allows the per- formance of shots to be analyzed. e method is based on the ball locations provided by ShotLink™and the subsequent number of shots required to hole out from each respective location. ISOPAR values are calculated which represent the number of shots the field would require to hole out. ese ISOPAR values can, a) be visualized on an ISOPAR map and, b) lead to a new performance indicator called Shot ality, which is the difference between the ISOPAR values of the starting position and finishing position, respectively. e Shot ality score can also be used to determine how many shots were saved per shot, or per type of shot, with respect to the performance of the field. 1 Introduction In performance analysis, characteristics of a process which describe how an outcome was achieved are used to assess the performance itself (Hughes & Bartle, 2002) and are referred to as performance indica- tors. Classical performance analysis techniques in golf have focused on classes of golf shots (James, 2007), such as driving distance, approach shot accuracy and puing average (James & Rees, 2008). Measures like greens in regulation, average pus per green and driving distance are intended to describe players’ abilities to perform certain types of shots, yet these abilities are not actually assessed.

Lowry drained the putt for birdie-3 to seal the win. Lowry earns his first-career PGA TOUR victory in his 28th start at the age of 28 years, 4 months and 7 days. He earns a three-year exemption on the PGA TOUR through the 2017-2018 season. Lowry wins in his 3rd start in the Bridgestone Invitational: 2015/Won, 2013/T48, 2009/77th. He wins his first World Golf Championships event in his 9th start. Lowry entered the final round two shots behind the leaders (Jim Furyk and Justin Rose at 9-under).
