4111 OPERATOR I NATURE OF WORK This is skilled work in the operation of heavy and complex automotive equipment. Work involves the responsibility for the safe and effective operation of and maintenance equipment requiring the application of considerable manipulative skill. Work also involves the responsibility for the performance of equipment maintenance and repair work, and may involve other skilled and semi-skilled manual tasks. Work may also involve lead-work supervision. Supervision is received from a supervisor who assigns and inspects work in progress.

EXAMPLES OF WORK (Any one position of this class may not include all duties listed, nor do listed examples include all duties that may be found in positions of this class). Operates for excavating, leveling, and filling; Operates front-end , steel and rubber rollers, and ; Performs general maintenance and repair work; Assists crew members in the performance of more skilled tasks in utility repairs and maintenance; Operates other power equipment as needed; Operates trucks pulling trailers rated over 10,000 GVW; Must be able to operate equipment below this classification; Performs related work as required.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS High school diploma and two years experience in the operation and maintenance of a variety of the heavier and more complex construction and maintenance equipment. Also must possess a Class A driver's license; or possess Class B and obtain Class A within 4 months of appointment.

DESIRABLE AND EXPERIENCE Considerable knowledge of the function and operating methods of a variety of heavy and complex construction and maintenance equipment; Considerable knowledge of the operating hazards and safety precautions necessary; Knowledge of the geography and streets of the City and the general location and characteristics of the utility system as required by the position; Ability to operate a variety of heavy equipment efficiently and safely; Ability to service and make minor repairs to equipment.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS The following are considered to be essential to the successful performance of this position, with or without reasonable accommodations, as listed in the examples of duty above: Must be able to read, write, and speak English at a level sufficient to perform all testing, to communicate with work groups and the public, to understand and carry out verbal and written directives, and to locate necessary areas of the City using maps, directions, or other means; Must be able to work to tolerate long and stressful periods of work including continuous shifts; Must be able to perform strenuous physical work including repetitive bending, stooping, kneeling, walking on uneven surfaces, and lifting 50 lbs. with occasional lifting up to 75 lbs; Must be capable of working with exposure to various environmental conditions such as dust, dirt, noise, disagreeable odors, humidity, and extreme temperatures; Must have sufficient motor skills and manual dexterity to operate equipment required of this position; Must be alert and aware of surroundings at all times in order to recognize potentially dangerous situations to self or others; Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with work groups, supervisors, and the general public;
