Once the site of an Algonkian Indian village, Swansboro officially began its maritime history in the mid 1700s, when a prominent landowner, Theophilus Weeks, divided a portion of his coastal plantation into 48 lots with 6 streets, and the colonial port town was born. But it wasn’t until 1783 that the town was of- ficially incorporated as Swannsborough, named in honor of North Carolina House of Commons Speaker Samuel Swann. The spelling of the name has changed, but the quiet town, snuggly tucked along the North Carolina coast where the White Oak River meets the Intracoastal Waterway, is still steeped in charm and southern hospitality. From its quaint historic water- front to its pristine undeveloped beaches, the Swansboro area offers a relaxing yet exciting destination to explore. Strolling through the streets of the historic downtown water- front, visitors can envision life as it once was for the port commu- nity. Many historic homes and buildings are well preserved and carry national historic designations. Tall shrimp boats mark the horizon, bringing to mind the town’s early heritage of ship build- ing and commercial fishing.

2021 Visitors, Relocation & Chamber Membership Directory 27 Fast forward to present day and most would agree the pace in Swansboro hasn’t changed much at all. Relaxed, coastal living is here! In fact, outdoor living is a way of life. Start by taking a tran- quil stroll along one of the area’s pristine beaches. Bear Island is great for shell collecting! Then, try a seaside adventure…or two. Take your pick from fishing, boating, paddle boarding, surf- ing, kayaking, camping, hunt- ing, hiking, and biking (just to name a few!) Because of its convenient lo- cation and intriguing maritime history, Swansboro is a popular destination for transient boat- ers. The town currently offers three docking facilities in the historic downtown area, including the Moore Street Dock, Main Street Dock and the newly con- structed Church Street Dock, designed to give overnight boaters with boats measuring 26 feet or larger easy access to the down- town area. Two local marinas (Casper’s Marina and Dudley’s Marina) are also conveniently located in downtown Swansboro. Across the Intracoastal Waterway outdoor enthusiasts will love Hammocks Beach State Park, Swansboro’s coastal treasure. The park is home to Bear Island, an undevel- oped barrier island that can only be reached by ferry or private boat. This largely un- disturbed setting is popular with day trippers, boaters, kayakers, and campers. And it’s a great family outing, too! The Seaside Arts Council’s Summer Concerts Series (SwanFest) is certainly an experience that you don’t want to miss. Throughout the summer weekly outdoor concerts are a treat for locals and tourists alike in Swansboro’s Olde Towne Square Pavilion. Music styles vary each week, so there’s always some- thing for everyone. Some are local favorites…some travel many miles to perform. All concerts are free and family friendly (no alcohol allowed.)

28 www.SwansboroChamber.org (910) 326.1174 Swansboro also hosts a wide variety of events throughout the year, including the Annual Swansboro Mullet Festival of North Carolina. Other popular events are the Arts by the Sea Festival, Derby Day, Military Appreciation Day at Hammocks Beach State Park, Fourth of July Fireworks, Swansboro by Candlelight (holiday shopping), the Christmas Flotilla, and the Swansboro Rotary Oyster Roast. Swansboro hosts fishing tour- naments throughout the year including the Swansboro Rotary’s Memorial Day King Mackerel Blue Water Tournament, the Hook & Bones Redfish Tournament and the Swansboro Century Club Speckled Trout Tournament. Homes with picturesque views of the White Oak River or the Intracoastal Waterway are easy to find in the 1.4 square miles that make up the town of Swansboro. With a population of just over 2,900, Swansboro has two county elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. For more information on the historic town of Swansboro, N.C., please call (910) 326-1174 or visit www.visitswansboro.org.

Venture to Bear Island and reward yourself with vivid memo- ries of one of the most unspoiled beaches on the Atlantic Coast. Accessible only by passenger ferry or private boat, there’s just one thing at Hammocks Beach that’s crowded, the list of things to do. Stroll the beach with laughing gulls and sandpipers. Cast a baited hook into endless rows of foaming breakers. Discover tiny specimens of marine life in tidal pools and mudflats. Use a camera or paintbrush to capture the green and gold grasses that color the salt marshes. Spend the night among the sand dunes, or simply bask in the sun and do noth- ing at all. Primitive campsites are located near the beach and the inlet. Fourteen family campsites accommodate six people each. Two group campsites, available to affiliated groups only, accommodate a total of 36 people. Light and simple is the way to travel as campers must carry all provisions to the campsites from the beach or ferry dock. Water and other facilities are available on the island, except from mid-November through mid-March when the facilities are winter- ized. Fires are not permitted, and campers must remove all trash. Camping is permitted on numbered sites only and permits must be obtained from the park office on the mainland. Reservations are required for group sites. Campsites are open year round. Secluded and tranquil, free from intruding com- mercialism, Hammocks Beach may not be for everyone, but the island is a retreat for people who welcome the challenges of sun, sand, sea and sky.

2021 Visitors, Relocation & Chamber Membership Directory 39 Cedar Point

Mention Cedar Point, N.C., and most locals think of the famous Octagon House that was built in Cedar Point by Edward Hill. With its unique architecture and picturesque setting, it has fascinated visitors and residents alike since 1859. Much has changed since the Hill family owned their plantation, but family values and hard work are still a strong part of this tight knit community. Cedar Point is known for its small businesses, many of which have been family owned and operated for years. N.C. 24, the “main drag,” is dotted with a wide variety of shops and service businesses. For an area of approximately 1,400+ resi- dents, business is bustling. Local produce stands are a popular fixture in Cedar Point. Visitors drive from miles around to get what locals might sometimes take for granted: locally grown fruits and vegetables. One thing none of them ever take for granted... a watermelon is always well worth the trip to Carteret County. Since these melons can only be successfully grown in land surrounding Bogue Sound, they will continue to be a draw to the area for many years to come. Chartered in 1988, Cedar Point was named for the cedar trees that lined N.C. Hwy. 24 for many years. Recent hurricanes have claimed many of these majestic trees but the picturesque views of Bogue Sound, the White Oak River, and the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway still remain. Exploring the area is easy. Boaters can launch directly into the Intracoastal Waterway via the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission Boat Ramp on N.C. 24. Another N.C. Wildlife Boat Ramp is available at Western Park off Old N.C. 58.

Carteret County, established in 1722, encompasses 1341 square miles (including land and water) of North Carolina’s Crystal Coast. With a population of 68,000 (and growing), the salty breeze, quaint towns, and relaxing “beach time” atmosphere attracts visi- tors from all over the world. Entertainment for all ages is THE goal at the Crystal Coast. First things first…kick back…relax! Then, pick from biking, surfing, hiking, swimming, golfing, fishing, boating, water skiing, kayaking, shell collecting, shopping and dining….or just hanging out at the beach with a good book and a smile. The North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores is a major attraction for Carteret County. The aquarium showcases both the area’s maritime and marine history and has year-round exhibits and activities designed to help visitors explore the wonders of Carteret County and the Crystal Coast.

History buffs will appreciate many stops along the N.C. Crystal Coast. , located at the eastern end of Bogue Banks, is home to one of North Carolina’s coastal Civil War forts open for public exploration.

2021 Visitors, Relocation & Chamber Membership Directory 51 The North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort, N.C., is a must- see for those interested in North Carolina’s maritime history. It is the official repository for artifacts recovered from the shipwreck of ’s flagship, Queen Anne’s Revenge. Diving enthusiasts have been coming to North Carolina’s Crystal Coast for years. Because of the many shipwrecks, this area of the Atlantic is famous for some of the most ac- claimed diving in the world. Bird lovers will want to tour the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum at Harkers Island, where the tradi- tion of decoy carving by local craftsmen is alive and well. The Core Sound Gallery is open all year round to bring this Core Sound heritage to new generations. Another of the Crystal Coast’s popular treasures is the Cape Lookout National Seashore, a collection of three undevel- oped barrier islands, including South Core Banks, the home of the Cape Lookout Lighthouse. Climb the lighthouse…enjoy the remote beaches…observe the wild horses…then picnic or even camp in this seaside wilderness accessible only by ferry or boat. carteret county Founded in 1722 Named for John The county seat, which Carteret, who became is in Beaufort, is the Earl Granville, one of third oldest town in the Lord Proprietors. In keeping with its maritime history, Carteret County and Morehead City are home to several marine research facilities. The North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries is located in Morehead City, along with the Center for Marine Sciences & Technology, a partnership between Carteret Community College and N.C. State University. UNC’s Institute of Marine Sciences and Duke University’s Marine Lab also have state- of-the-art research facilities in Carteret County. Morehead City and Beaufort are sister towns known for their his- toric, picturesque waterfronts. Beach towns include Atlantic Beach, Pine Knoll Shores, Indian Beach, Salter Path and Emerald Isle. 2021 Visitors, Relocation & Chamber Membership Directory 53 Cape Carteret When Cape Carteret first incorporated in 1959, it consisted of a mere 15 residences, one retail store, and a property develop- ment office. Now, the town that was once just a vision to founder William Britton McLean has prospered into a vibrant community at the western end of Carteret County, minutes away from Cedar Point, Swansboro, Emerald Isle, Bogue and Peletier, N.C. McLean was instrumental in the creation of Cape Carteret, developing plans for expansion of the quiet, coastal community and then donating the land for the planned expansion. From these early days of incorporation, Cape Carteret has grown to a population of just over 2,000, including many retirees and second home owners. Water sports are abundantly popular in the area, certainly along the Bogue Sound and the Intracoastal Waterway. Fishing, boating, swimming and kayak- ing are all popular outdoor activities. Cape Carteret also has its own boat ramp at the end of Manatee St., a less crowded alternative to North Carolina’s public boat ramps. For the land lovers, biking and hiking trails are readily avail- able along the coast and throughout the Croatan Forest. The new Cape Carteret Trail, a multi-use path, will link area neighborhoods, businesses, schools, and public services with a path that accom- modates walkers, runners, cyclists of all skill levels and abilities and will be ADA compliant.

54 www.SwansboroChamber.org (910) 326.1174 Golfers are drawn to Cape Carteret’s beautiful Star Hill Golf Club. The golf club offers a well maintained, challenging course and amenities for a year-round golfing experience. Cape Carteret is also known for a very active garden club. The club was established in 1977 and since then has worked on a number of projects throughout the community, introducing “green” gar- dening and conservation methods to the coast. Cape Carteret was one of the first communities in North Carolina to establish a community watch program. The town offers its residents a local library, two local churches, a number of restaurants and a popular area shopping center. 56 www.SwansboroChamber.org (910) 326.1174 Emerald Isle

In 1954, the barrier island of Bogue Banks, now known as Emerald Isle, was pur- chased by seven developers for $350,000. At the time, this was Carteret County’s largest recorded land purchase. Of course, that was considered quite a tidy sum of money by 1950’s standards, but most visitors and residents both past and present will agree that those visionary developers got a bargain. Today, Emerald Isle is one of the most popular islands along the North Carolina coast. Known as a family friendly beach community, Emerald Isle was incorporated in 1957 and boasts a year-round population of approximately 3,800, although during the tourist season that number rises significantly. Activities on the island include aquatic favorites like swimming, snorkeling, surf- ing, scuba diving, boating, sailing, kayaking and wind surfing. Fishermen (and ladies) can cast their lines from the famous Bogue

2021 Visitors, Relocation & Chamber Membership Directory 57 Inlet Fishing Pier, surf fish, or boat their way through the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean in search of THE BIG ONE. (Boaters will enjoy the convenience of Emerald Isle’s public boat ramp located just off Hwy. 58.) In keeping with the town’s friendly family atmosphere, Emerald Isle features an extensive 10-foot-wide bicycle path for even more family fun plus a newly constructed Visitor’s Center. Walking the beach, shell collecting, shopping and golfing are other favorite pastimes of the beach life. The island also has a variety of dining options (local seafood being a spe- cialty, of course) to tempt the taste buds. Turtle lovers unite with the Emerald Isle Sea Turtle Protection Program. The program is designed to monitor the nesting activities of the endangered loggerhead sea turtle from May to August and is always looking for volunteers to help in the turtles’ amazing nesting and hatching process. Annual events include the St. Patrick’s Day Festival, July 4th fireworks display, and the Christmas Parade. For more information, go to www.emeraldisle-nc.org or call (252) 354-3424.

Founded around 1870 by Jeremiah Jabez Pelletier, the area was originally called Pelletier Mills. In 1905, the postmaster’s appointment certificate inex- plicably read Peletier instead of Pelletier Mills and the mistake was never corrected. The town Bogue became known as Peletier. Peletier borders the Croatan National Forest, a coastal forest known for its bogs, salt , and pine forest. Bird watching is especially popular here. Hiking, camping, and hunting are also fun for residents and visitors. Many water sport enthusiasts embrace the rivers and creeks of the Croatan as a less crowded alternative to the nearby beaches for their favorite pastimes, whether they be swimming, fishing or boating. 60 www.SwansboroChamber.org (910) 326.1174 Bogue Bogue may be one of the smallest towns along the Crystal Coast, but residents and visitors alike will agree that a lot of Bogue Sound’s history is packed into this little town. Incorporated in 1995, Bogue now boasts a population of just over 680 full-time residents. The area borders scenic Bogue Sound, and is only a short ‘jump’ from Cape Carteret, Emerald Isle, and Swansboro. Bogue is home to United States Marine Corps Auxiliary Landing Field, or Bogue Field, a training facility used for flight exercises along the coast. The facility was originally opened in 1942 and used for various military purposes, but since 2003, only one landing strip is open for military training exercises. 2021 Visitors, Relocation & Chamber Membership Directory 61 Weddings & Events Whether you’re planning a wedding, reunion, corporate or military event, you should consider the Swansboro area and its many seaside venues. There’s plenty for all to do in this coastal treasure. The term “traditional wedding” has rapidly taken on new meaning at North Carolina’s Crystal Coast. More and more, brides are opting for a walk through the dunes of a pristine beach instead of the traditional walk down the aisle. For beach loving couples, there could be no other option! It’s not as difficult to plan as you think! Like any wedding, it just takes some thought and organization…and a little help from the experts. Those planning destination weddings will find the area filled with helpful vendors knowledgeable with the latest wedding trends. Wedding and event planners, florists, jewelers, bridal shops, bed and breakfast/inns, hotels, rental agencies, event rental companies, party supply stores, caterers and a wide variety of restaurants…the Crystal Coast has it all. Many of these businesses provide more than one service, if not the complete wedding package. Every bride aspires to make her wedding her own with personal touches and unique ideas. Beach weddings offer a variety of ways to make a memorable day, whether the wedding is “barefoot bride” casual or a bit more elegant. (Who says you can’t combine a love of the ocean with sophisticated tastes?) Plus, picking wedding colors is never a problem at the coast. After all, every color goes with gor- geous water, a blue sky and sparkling sand, right? So, set the date and start planning your special event. You and your guests will be talking about it for years to come! continued...
