Holmes has converted three of his five third-round leads/co-leads on TOUR. He converted at the 2006 and 2008 Waste Management Phoenix Open and 2014 Wells Fargo Championship. He failed to convert at the 2010 Valero Texas Open (T13) and this week at the Farmers Insurance Open (P2). Scott Stallings Defending Farmers Insurance Open champion Scott Stallings finished runner-up in his quest to become the first back-to-back winner of the Farmers Insurance Open since Tiger Woods (2005-08). Stallings’ runner-up finish this week marked his first top 10 on TOUR since winning this event in 2014. The runner-up finish for three-time PGA TOUR winner Scott Stallings is the second of his career (2013 FedEx St. Jude Classic). The last player to win the Farmers Insurance Open and finish runner-up the next year was Brandt Snedeker (2012-13). Harris English Harris English finished runner-up for the first time in his career. He was seeking his third PGA TOUR victory (2013 FedEx St. Jude Classic, 2014 OHL Classic at Mayakoba). This week marked English’s first 54-hole lead on TOUR. Howell has had at least one top- 10 finish in each of his 16 seasons on the PGA TOUR. Six of his 72 career top-10 finishes have occurred at the Farmers Insurance Open, including runner-up finishes in both 2005 and 2007. Alex Prugh finished T5 for his first top 10 since a T2 at the 2010 Frys.com Open. His only other top-10 finishes in 81 career PGA TOUR starts also came in 2010, with back-to-back top 10s at the Humana Challenge (5 th ), Farmers Insurance Open (T5) and Northern Trust Open (T10). The Farmers Insurance Open has not produced a Page 3 of 3 first-time TOUR winner since Jay Don Blake in 1991. Prugh recorded the best finish this week among non- winners on TOUR. One week after a T5 at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, Martin Laird finished T7 in his seventh start at the Farmers Insurance Open (previous-best finish was T27 in 2010). It represents his first back-to-back top 10s since stringing together three in a row in 2011 (World Golf Championships-Cadillac Championship-T10, Valspar Championship-T5, Arnold Palmer Invitational (Won). Making his first start in the United States this season, Irishman Shane Lowry finished T7. In 18 total PGA TOUR starts, his other top 10s came at the 2013 World Golf Championships-Cadillac Match Play and the 2014 Open Championship – both T9s. 2009 Farmers Insurance Open winner Nick Watney finished T7 in his bid for his first victory since capturing The Barclays in 2012. Watney was born in Sacramento, Calif., and attended Fresno State. He now has six top 10s in 11 starts at the event. FedExCup leader Jimmy Walker, who won the Sony Open in Hawaii three weeks ago, finished T7 for his fourth top 10 of the season (one shy of TOUR-leader Robert Streb’s five). He now has three top 10s in eight starts at the Farmers Insurance Open (T7-2015, T4-2013, T8-2012). We remember his three major championships and his incredible work on the greens that made him one of the best putters of his generation. Beyond his career as a player, though, we will remember Billy as tremendous husband and father, a man devoted to family, charitable pursuits and his religion. He truly has left us with a lasting legacy.” Farmers Insurance Open’s University Day a Major Success Farmers Insurance has increased the overall University Day contribution to include a $7500 donation to each of the three players who tied with the low round during Saturday’s competition. With a –4 under par 68, Scott Stallings (Tennessee Tech), JB Holmes (Kentucky) and Carlos Ortiz (University of North Texas) will receive the donation to their college golf team. More than thirty players participated in Saturday’s competition including Rickie Fowler, Keegan Bradley, Gary Woodland and Brooks Koepka. Friday’s University Day Challenge glass break competition resulted in an exciting and dramatic tie between Ben Crane and Rickie Fowler. Farmers Insurance donated $10,000 to University of Oregon and Oklahoma State University on behalf of the co-winners. Overall, the 2015 University Day Program donated nearly $60,000 to college golf. .

REVIEW OF APPLIED ECONOMICS RAE Vol. 8, No. 1, (January-June 2012) THE DETERMINANTS OF ANNUAL EARNINGS FOR PGA PLAYERS UNDER THE NEW PGA’S FEDEX CUP SYSTEM Jonathan K Ohn*, William Bealing** and Dan Waeger*** Abstract: There have been numerous studies that examined the earnings determination of Major League Baseball (MLB) and National Football League (NFL) professional athletes, but relatively little attention has been paid to the earnings determination of professional golfers. The important difference between the two is: the earnings of MLB and NFL athletes are determined by past and expected future performance, while the earnings of professional golfers depend strictly on their current performance. In this paper, we reexamine the structure and determination of the PGA golfers’ tour earnings in the new era, which started with the introduction of the FedEx Cup Championship in 2007. We use two determination models – the first with a set of traditional skill variables, and the second with the skill variables along with two additional variables which reflect the monetary and psychological effect of a player’s timely performance at the majors, and the measure of a player’s consistency and persistency throughout the regular season. Overall, the second model appears to be a superior model, explaining the earnings determination of PGA players better. JEL classifications: J3; J7; M5 Keywords: Determination of Professional Golfers’ Earnings; Performance Variables; Earnings- Efficiency 1. INTRODUCTION Much attention has been paid to the study on the performance and earnings structure of professional sports players, especially in Major League Baseball (MLB) and National Football Leagues (NFL). However, relatively little attempt has been made to study the earnings structure of professional golfers.
