2017 Opening Day Guest Appearance South Florida State College Welcomes Willie Hernandez Guillermo “Willie” Hernandez was born Nov. 14, 1954, in Aguada, Puerto Rico. Willie played professional baseball at the major league level beginning his career with the Chicago Cubs in 1977. In his first two years in the majors, Hernandez was 16-9 with a 3.03 ERA. After being traded to the Philadelphia Phillies in 1983, Hernandez posted an 8-4 record with a 3.29 ERA and seven saves. The Phillies made the World Series that year, losing to the Baltimore Orioles in five games. Prior to the 1984 season, Hernandez made the final stop of his major league career when he was traded to the Detroit Tigers. Hernandez was 9-3 with 32 saves and a 1.92 ERA in 140 innings. That year, the Tigers won the World Series, and Hernandez became the third pitcher in major league baseball history to win the Cy Young Award, the MVP, and the World Series title in the same season. The others to accomplish that feat were Sandy Koufax in 1963 and Denny McLain in 1968. Hernandez finished his major league career with the Tigers in 1989.
