Mike “Skip” Gillespie - 1940—2020

One of college baseball's legendary coaches, Mike Gillespie passed away Wednesday, July 29, 2020, at the age of 80.

"On behalf of UCI Athletics Department, I want to offer heartfelt condo- lences to Coach Gillespie's wife, Barbara, his children, Kelly, Mitch, Matt and Tiffany; his grandchildren and his extended family," Director of Ath- letics Paula Smith said. "Mike was a leader, mentor, successful coach, and trusted colleague. We have lost a great baseball coach and even better man. He touched so many lives and he will be missed by many."

Gillespie coached UC Irvine for 11 seasons (2007-2018), leading the Ant- eaters to the College World Series in 2014. He was named National Coach of the Year by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association in 2014 and was named Big West Coach of the Year in 2009, when he guid- ed the 'Eaters to the conference title. Under Gillespie the Anteaters made five postseason appearances, including regional titles in 2008, 2011 and 2014.

Current head coach Ben Orloff, who played for and coached alongside Gillespie for years, added his thoughts: "Today has been tough. There are not enough words to describe Coach Gillespie. He is among the greatest coaches in the history of college baseball. He was a larger than life figure on and off the field. Anyone that had an opportunity to be around him is better because of it. He means so much to me personally. I've been so lucky to spend the time I have around him the last seven years. He's made and continues to make me a better person and coach. I have kept his nameplate in his office that I now occupy as a reminder of what it means to be a coach and to constantly try to make him proud."

Gillespie, who's number 19 was retired at UCI in 2018, coached several major league players, including Kes- ton Hiura, who is currently playing for the Milwaukee Brewers. He even coached his grandson, Cole, during his four-year collegiate career at UCI.

The American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Famer finished his career as the program's winningest coach at 393 and amassed a 1,156-886-2 record overall in 31 seasons as a Division I head coach. He won over 1,500 games during his 46 years of coaching that included a year at MiLB club Staten Island Yankees and the College of the Canyons where he began his career and won 420 games at over 16 seasons. Prior to UCI, Gillespie coached USC for 20 seasons, helping the Trojans to the national title in 1998. He also won a title as a player at USC in 1961 and was inducted in to the USC Hall of Fame. Gillespie and Jerry Kindall are the only two men to play on and coach a CWS championship baseball team.

Ralph J. Cicerone became the university’s fourth Chancellor in 1998, and with it, he brought his passion for athletics and baseball. The department was without a baseball program after it was cut following the 1992 season. In the spring of 1999, a grass-roots effort between Cicerone, athletic director Dan Guerrero, and five captains from UC Irvine athletic programs issued a referendum for students to vote to acquire the funding to bring baseball back to UC Irvine. Following its approval, ground was broken on Anteater Ballpark January 25, 2001. Anteater baseball was up and running in 2002, and has returned to its rightful place among the top programs in the nation.

Among being a leading expert on the causes of global climate change and heading the National Academy of Sciences which helped advise the Obama administration, Cicerone never lost his passion for baseball. Even as an established professor in 1980, he got the chance to be an announcer for the San Diego Padres leaving him with a tough decision on which avenue to pursue. While stationed in Washington D.C., Cicerone would stay connect- ed to the program even stopping by to check in on the facilities.

In May of 2009, Cicerone and the ballpark became one-in-the-same as he was honored by having the field named in his honor. Following Chancellor Cicero- ne’s passing in November of 2016, the team added patches on the sleeves of their uniforms to commemorate Cicerone marked with his initials “RC” that were worn through the 2017 and 2018 seasons. The Anteaters are forever indebted to Chancellor Cicerone’s vision and efforts.

“UCI baseball held a special place in the heart of Chancellor Ralph Cicerone. It may surprise some to know that among Chancellor Cicerone’s many interests, achievements, and accomplishments, he had a genuine love for baseball, and specifically UCI baseball. It was because of Chancellor Cicerone’s determination to resurrect baseball at UCI in the late 90s that he enlisted the support of others in the athletic department and among the students, and a successful referendum was brought to the students and passed allowing baseball to once again be played at UCI after a 10-year absence. The number of students and staff impacted for a lifetime by this successful effort is incalculable.

Even after Ralph left UCI to assume new duties in Washington D.C., he continued to closely follow Anteater baseball via the internet and personal contact with friends who also cared about the ‘Eaters. On his occasional trips back to Orange County, he without fail stopped by Cicerone Field to check in, lend his support, and he rarely missed an Alumni Game in early February. We all lost a great friend in Ralph Cicerone, he is missed, and will continue to be missed.” - Head Coach Mike Gillespie
