INTRODUCTION Three-types of educational systems are foundwithin the Navajo Reservation:(1). state-supported public schools, (2)Bureau of Indian Affairs Boarding and DaySchools, and (3) private schools. Approximately 50,000 students attend school daily,with sOme^25,-000 enrolled in public schools; 20,850 attendingBureau of Indian Affairs schools, and the remaining 4,000or so registered at private schools. Few special education servicesare available to students. Only fifty-two special class unitsare provided in Bureau of Indian Affairs schools.Public schools offer no organized specialservices while several private schools providesome services to handicapped children.Therefore, it was and is readily apparent thata signifi- cant number of handicapped children receiveno special educational services.Prior to the efforts of the Navajo EducationResource Center, no regional.plan for full services tohandicappedchildrek, p had been developed. To initiate movement in service provisionfor handicapped Indiarchildren, it was necessary to identify thesechildren, define". religions Article Latter-Day Saint Liturgy: The Administration of the Body and Blood of Jesus James E. Faulconer Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship, Brigham Young University, Provo, UT 84602, USA; [email protected] Abstract: Latter-day Saint (“Mormon”) liturgy opens its participants to a world undefined by a stark border between the transcendent and immanent, with an emphasis on embodiment and relationality. The formal rites of the temple, and in particular that part of the rite called “the endowment”, act as a frame that erases the immanent–transcendent border. Within that frame, the more informal liturgy of the weekly administration of the blood and body of Christ, known as “the sacrament”, transforms otherwise mundane acts of living into acts of worship that sanctify life as a whole. I take a phenomenological approach, hoping that doing so will deepen interpretations that a more textually based approach might miss. Drawing on the works of Robert Orsi, Edward S. Casey, Paul Moyaert, and Nicola King, I argue that the Latter-day Saint sacrament is not merely a ritualized sign of Christ’s sacrifice. Instead, through the sacrament, Christ perdures with its participants in an act of communal memorialization by which church members incarnate the coming of the divine community of love and fellow suffering. Participants inhabit a hermeneutically transformed world as covenant children born again into the family of God. He now resides in North Carolina with his wife Becky and two children and pursues his hobbies of reading, writing and researching history, especially of the American West. * * * * Marvin L. FoUett, a long-time resident of Douglas, has studied, especially since the 1950s. the trail of the Mormon Battalion in Cochise County. His great-grandfather was William A. Exemplary, by definition, means the top 5 percent of education programs in student outcomes. In most cases, these programs are in the top 1 percent. Each program entryincludes contact information, a narrative description, and in some cases, awards received, documentation of student outcomes, and other relevant information. Schools range from elementary through college and include public, private, tribal, and nonprofit. Programs address student support services, comprehensive school improvement, dropout prevention, adult education, college preparation, technology integration, and other areas. All 16 programs are summarized on one page in the beginning of the book, and program characteristics are presented in chart form. A brief history of Indian education is followed by a description of the 11 elements that are characteristic of exemplary programs: acknowledgement of the problem; set priorities for problems; vision, planning; commitment; restructuring and retraining; goal setting; experimentation, testing, and evaluation; outreach; expertise; and administrative support.
