Questions and Answers About Passover (passover begins on Friday evening, April 17 -First Seder)

Q. What does the name mean? A. Pesach, translated Passover, comes from Exodus, the second Book of the Bible, where the 10th Plague is described. It is stated that God saved the Jewish people by passing over their houses as He smote the houses of the Egyptians.

Q. What is the significance of Passover? A. Around the 13th century, B.C.E. (before the Common Era), the Jewish people were living in Egypt. A new Pharaoh ascended the throne and engaged in a series of wars with his neighbors. Fearful that the Hebrews might join his enemies, he enslaved them. Forced to make bricks for the tremendous pyramids that were being built, the Jews led a bitter life, until they were rescued by Moses, who led them out of Egypt. The Passover holiday commemorates this delivery.

Q. What does the word Seder mean? A. Seder is a Hebrew word meaning order of procedure. On the first evening of Pesach, a special order of service known as the Seder is conducted. When our ancestors left Egypt they celebrated their freedom with a special ceremony. Ever since then Jews have been observing this ceremony, and it has come to be called the Seder. The Seder is not merely a dinner. It is a celebration.

Q. What does Haggadah mean? A. It is a Hebrew word meaning The Story. It is also the name of the book from which we read the service for the Seder. The New Union Haggadah is highly recommended. It is easy to read and beautifully illustrated. Sufficient Haggadahs should be on hand so that everyone can participate.

Q. What does Ma nishtana mean? A. These are two Hebrew words meaning "why is this different?" The four questions the youngest child asks at the Seder start with "rna nishtana." The narrative is the reply.

Q. Why do we eat Matzah instead of bread on Passover? A. When our ancestors left Egypt, the Bible tells us, they had no time to bake their bread in an oven, so they took along dough and baked it in the sun while traveling. The matzah reminds us of the bread of affliction or suffering which our ancestors ate in Egypt and of their haste to flee from the land of slavery. The meaning of the Hebrew word Matzah is "unleavened. "
