This very handsome period home, which was originally built for a wealthy mill owner back in 1850, occupies a superb tucked away location close to the centre of the thriving village of Kirkburton. “We bought the property seventeen years ago and as well as the fact that it was a lovely big house that was perfect for our growing family, it was the location that really sold it to us,” says the owner. “Before moving here we were living in the next village up the hill, but our previous home sat in a very windy and exposed position. In contrast, The Dene is nestled in a wonderfully secluded and sheltered location, but still close to the centre of the village, which boasts a butchers, a bakers, a Co-op and a number of cosy , so everything you’d want.”

“At some point in the 1960s the house had been converted into a doctors surgery and although the previous owners had done a lot of work to transform it back into a family home, when we came here there was still a lot to be done, so we embarked upon a rather ambitious project of renovation. We refurbished the interior from top to bottom and knocked the old surgery and waiting room into one to create a fabulous 38ft-long family kitchen; we added a new spiral staircase and created a beautiful en-suite bedroom in the loft area and we also repointed the exterior and renovated all of the lovely old sash windows. It’s now a stunning home that’s been brought right up to modern standards, but in a way that doesn’t detract from the wonderful sense of history of this lovely old building. I’d say we’ve struck the perfect balance between old and new.”

“Another huge selling point was the lovely big garden, which wraps around the front and side of the house and incorporates open lawns, a wooded area and a pretty orchard,” continues the owner. “Because the house is somewhat tucked away it’s not only very peaceful, but it’s also extremely private and we enjoy the most wonderful views across the valley.”

“One of my favourite rooms would have to be the kitchen,” says the owner. “It’s been beautifully refitted and has all the mod cons one would expect and it’s also a lovely big sociable space where we can all gather when the children come back to visit.”

The Dene Pages.indd 6 27/09/2018 11:30 The Dene Pages.indd 7 27/09/2018 11:30 “We enjoy these fabulous views across open fields and it’s a peaceful place to live so our immediate surroundings feel very rural, however I travel quite a bit for work and from here I’ve discovered that it’s relatively easy to get just about anywhere,” says the owner. “It takes around half an hour to get into either or Leeds, Manchester is only an hour’s drive from here and I can hop on a train and be in central London in just a couple of hours.”
