Theirs is one of the best in baseball, Brandon Crawford. Their second baseman was drafted as a shortstop and converted in the minors, Joe Panik. They drafted Matt Duffy as a shortstop and taught him to play third base as a big-leaguer. Last summer, they traded for Eduardo Nuñez, who had played mostly shortstop during his career but played third after Duffy was traded to Tampa Bay. Heck, even Buster Posey played shortstop in college. No wonder the Giants’ top hitting prospect is a shortstop. Not that Christian Arroyo is targeted to play the position in the big leagues, not with Mr. Crawford in the house. Arroyo, who’s 21 going on 30, is the team’s third baseman of the future, and we’re not talking the distant future. It’s not unrealistic to imagine Arroyo playing third on Opening Day in 2018, so long as he continues to excel on the fast track. 1 “For me, they stressed the value of versatility,” Arroyo said at his Scottsdale Stadium locker. “Staying versatile is going to be huge.” Arroyo was the Giants’ top draft pick in 2013 — he was salutatorian at Hernando High School in Brooksville, Fla. — and he signed after turning down a scholarship from Florida, where he would have studied architectural engineering. The new partnership will bring some of the most exciting prospects in the game to Blue Wahoos Stadium alongside the storied legacy of Twins baseball. Twins history began in 1961 when Washington Senators president Calvin Griffith made the historic decision to move his family’s team to the Midwest, settling on the Minneapolis/St. Paul area in Minnesota. The new team was named after the state’s famous Twin Cities and began their inaugual season with a talented roster featuring Harmon Killebrew, Bob Allison, Camilo Pascual, and Jim Lemon. Cahill had another dazzling performance Thursday night, allowing just four hits in seven innings to help the A's secure an 8- 1 win over the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards and earn their second straight series victory. Cahill is now 7-0 in his last nine starts, as he continues to have the longest winning streak by an A's pitcher since Haren won 10 in a row from April 18 to July 1 in 2007. Haren was named the American League's starting pitcher for the 2007 All-Star Game, and Cahill may have sewn up his own appearance with Thursday's effort. "Without a doubt," A's manager Bob Geren said when asked if Cahill is worthy of a spot on the AL team. Geren recently told New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi who his best candidates were for the game in Anaheim on July 13, "and Trevor was definitely one of them." The All-Star reserves will be announced Sunday, and Girardi will manage the AL team. Cahill (8-2) allowed a run in the first inning for the first time this season as Nick Markakis' sacrifice fly scored Corey Patterson. But he allowed just four base runners over his final six innings in lowering his ERA to 2.74.
