To our Stolen Generations members and their families, we remember you and honour you for your courage. This report summarises the outcomes of a national workshop on collective healing for Stolen Generations members and their descendants, held in September 2015 and funded by the Healing Foundation. Its contents reflect the collective knowledge and experience of ten organisations from around Australia that received funding for projects under the second or third rounds of the Healing Foundation’s Stolen Generations Initiative. We acknowledge the leadership of the Healing Foundation’s Stolen Generations Reference Committee and the contributions of workshop participants. The workshop was coordinated by Caitlin Mullins from the Healing Foundation and facilitated by Benny Hodges. Donna Hensen painted the special stones that people took home. Two members of the Muru Marri team at the School of Public Health and Community Medicine at UNSW Australia, Ilse Blignault and Rachelle Arkles, acted as scribes and prepared this report. Prior to commencing this PhD project, my research into community media revealed that Aboriginal people were mostly absent from Perth community television. In spite of participating in a consortium to establish community television in Perth, the Aboriginal community had not broadcast a single program by 2006 when this PhD project commenced. In this same year, the only Aboriginal community radio station in the south-west lost its licence and the local Noongar community were working towards re- establishing their radio presence. Thus, while Aboriginal community media in other parts of Australia were experiencing considerable success, Perth Aboriginal media appeared to be struggling. This prompted a series of questions that this research set out to investigate. How did the Perth Aboriginal community feel about community media? How strongly if at all did they want their voices to be part of the public sphere? Were there circumstances, particular to Perth, that were impeding the establishment of Aboriginal community media? What were the ingredients needed to establish successful Aboriginal community media in an urban environment like Perth? The answers to these questions were sought through the production of an Aboriginal magazine-style television program series called Noongar Dandjoo, named after the Noongar tribal group who are the traditional custodians of the land in the south-west of Western Australia. -
Dispossession, Social Suffering, and Survival
Running head: DISPOSSESSION, SOCIAL SUFFERING, AND SURVIVAL Narrating Oppression, Psychosocial Suffering and Survival through the Bush Babies Project Amy Quayle BPsych (Hons) MAppPsych College of Health and Biomedicine Psychology Discipline Victoria University Melbourne, Australia Thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (July, 2017) DISPOSSESSION, SOCIAL SUFFERING, AND SURVIVAL Abstract Aboriginal people in Australia continue to fare worse across the broad range of social, economic, and health indicators. One response to fostering Aboriginal empowerment has been through community arts and cultural development–a creative and participatory methodology for working in and with communities. The current research examined the stories shared by Aboriginal Elders as part of the Bush Babies project, and in conversational interviews with four Aboriginal Elders who participated in the project. Aboriginal storytelling through the project and in the context of the research was conceptualised as a site to examine and challenge power as part of a transformative psychosocial praxis (Sonn, Stevens, & Duncan, 2013). Informed by contextualist constructionist epistemology and critical theory, the current research adopted narrative inquiry to examine the stories shared by Aboriginal Elders in explaining the past, present, and possibilities for the future and in constructing what it means to be Aboriginal/Noongar in the present. Rappaport’s (2000) model for conceptualising personal stories, community narratives, and dominant cultural narratives, and writing on counter-stories/storytelling informed analysis of the stories. Three broad community narratives were identified in the Bush Baby storytelling. Drawing from both historical memory and the living memory of the Elders, the stories highlighted the circuits of dispossession in the lives of Aboriginal people. -
