Prologue: Basic Operations

Whether you’re completely new to computers or just new to Windows 8 or 8.1, there are some basic operations you need to master. On any PC, you can operate Windows with your keyboard or mouse (or, on a notebook PC, your touchpad). On a touchscreen PC, you can also use touch gestures for many operations. Choose whichever approach is more comfortable and convenient for you. Using Windows with a Mouse or Touchpad To use Windows efficiently on a desktop or notebook PC, you need to master a few simple operations with your mouse or touchpad, such as pointing and clicking, dragging and dropping, and right-clicking. 4 Prologue: Basic Operations

Mouse and Touchpad Operations Of the various mouse and touchpad operations, the most common is 1 pointing and clicking—that is, you point at something with the onscreen cursor, and then click the appropriate mouse or touchpad button. Normal clicking uses the left button; however, some operations require that you click the right button instead.

1 To single-click (select) an item, position the cursor over the onscreen item and click the left mouse or touchpad button. 2 To double-click (select or open) an item, position the cursor over the onscreen item and click the 2 left mouse or touchpad button twice in rapid succession. 3 To right-click an item (to dis- play a context-sensitive options 3 menu), position the cursor over the onscreen item, and then click the right mouse button. 4 To drag and drop an item from one location to another, posi- tion the cursor over the item, click and hold the left mouse button, drag the item to a new 4 position, and then release the mouse button. Using Windows with a Mouse or Touchpad 5

5 To scroll through a window, click the up or down arrow on the window’s scrollbar. 6 To move to a specific place in a long window or document, click the scroll box (between the up and down arrows) and drag it to 6 a new position.

Scroll Wheel If your mouse has a scroll wheel, you 5 can use it to scroll through a long document. Just roll the wheel back or forward to scroll down or up through a window. Likewise, some notebook touchpads let you drag your finger up or down to scroll through a window.

7 To display the Start screen, mouse over the lower-left cor- ner of the screen and click the Start button. (The Start button is always present on the Windows desktop, at the far left side of the taskbar.)

7 6 Prologue: Basic Operations

8 To open the Charms bar, mouse over the lower-right or upper- right corner of the screen.

Mouse Over Another common mouse operation is called the mouse over, or hovering, where you hold the cursor over an 8 onscreen item without pressing either of the mouse buttons. For example, when you mouse over an icon or menu item, Windows displays a ToolTip that tells you a little about the selected item.

Using Windows with a Keyboard You don’t have to use your mouse or touchpad to perform many operations in Windows. Many users prefer to use their keyboards, as it enables them to keep their hands in one place when they’re entering text and other information.

Keyboard Operations Many Windows operations can also be achieved from your computer keyboard, without touching your mouse or touchpad. Several of these operations use special keys that are unique to Windows PC keyboards, such as the Windows and Application keys. Using Windows with a Keyboard 7

To scroll down any page or screen, press the PageDown key .

To scroll up any page or screen, press the PageUp key.

To launch a program or open a file, use the keyboard’s arrow keys to move to the appropriate item and then press the Enter key.

To display a context-sensitive pop-up menu (the equivalent of right-clicking an item), use the keyboard’s arrow keys to move to that item and then press the Application key .

To cancel or “back out” of the current operation, press the Esc Esc key.

To rename a file, use the keyboard’s arrow keys to move to F2 that file and then press the F2 key.

To access an application’s Help system, press the F1 key. F1

To display the Start screen, press the Windows key.

To open the Charms bar, press the Windows+C keys . 8 Prologue: Basic Operations Using Windows on a Touchscreen PC If you’re using Windows 8 or 8.1 on a computer or tablet with a touchscreen display, you’ll be using your fingers instead of a mouse to do what you need to do. To that end, it’s important to learn some essential touchscreen operations. It’s Not All Good Touchscreen PCs The majority of PCs sold today do not have touchscreen displays, as this technology typically adds $100 or so to the computer’s price. There’s no point in touching or swiping a non-touchscreen dis- play, as it won’t do anything. Save your touch gestures for PCs with true touchscreen displays.

Touchscreen Operations Windows 8 and 8.1 were designed with touchscreens in mind. Most operations can be performed without a mouse or keyboard, using simple touch gestures instead. To “click” or select an item on a touchscreen display, tap the item with the tip of your finger and release.

To “right-click” an item on a touchscreen display (typically displays a context-sensitive options menu), press and hold the item with the tip of your finger.

To scroll up or down a page, swipe the screen in the desired direction.

To open the Charms bar, touch the right edge of the screen and swipe to the left. Using Windows on a Touchscreen PC 9

To display the Start screen, open the Charms bar and then tap Start.

➔ Understanding User Accounts ➔ Setting Up a New Account on Your PC ➔ Switching Users 4

Setting Up User Accounts

Chances are you’re not the only person using your computer; it’s likely that you’ll be sharing your PC with your spouse and maybe even your grandkids. Fortunately, you can configure Windows so that different people using your computer sign on with their own custom settings— and access to their own personal files. Understanding User Accounts The best way for multiple people to use a single computer is to assign each person his or her own password-protected user account. For a given person to use the PC and access her own programs and files, she has to sign into the computer with her personal password. If a person doesn’t have an account or the proper password, she can’t use the computer. Windows 8.1 lets you create two different types of user accounts— online and local. The default is the online account, which comes with some unique benefits. 76 Chapter 4 Setting Up User Accounts

Sign In Options When you set up a new user account, you can choose from three different ways to sign into your PC. You can sign into your account with a traditional password, with a personal identification number (PIN), or with something new, called a picture password. Most of us will choose the traditional password option, as it’s easiest to set up and less confusing to use.

Microsoft Accounts An online account is linked to a new or existing Microsoft Account, and lets you synchronize your account settings between multiple computers. That is, you can sign into another Windows 8.1 computer with your Microsoft Account and see the same Start screen, apps, and favorites you have on your home computer. In addition, when you use a Microsoft Account on your computer, Windows displays information from other Microsoft sites you use. For example, Windows displays the latest weather conditions in the Weather app, the latest news headlines in the News app, and the latest stock quotes in the Stock app—all based on settings you make when you configure your Microsoft Account. Local accounts cannot access this personalized data. The good news is that you might already have a Microsoft Account. If you use Outlook.com or Hotmail for email, you have a Microsoft Account. If you use the online version of Microsoft Office, or Microsoft’s SkyDrive online storage, you have a Microsoft Account. If you subscribe to the Xbox Live online gaming service (or, more likely, if your grandkids do), you have a Microsoft Account. If you don’t yet have a Microsoft Account, it’s easy enough to create one while you’re setting up a new user account on your PC. It’s free, and doesn’t take much time. Setting Up a New Account on Your PC 77

Local Accounts The second type of account is a local account exclusive to your current computer. This is the only type of account you could create in older versions of Windows. In Windows 8.1, you can still use local accounts, even though online accounts are more versatile. The chief advantage of a local account is privacy. With an online account, all your activities are linked to a central account, which Microsoft stores and manages. With a local account, your offline activities are not transmitted back to Microsoft. Unfortunately, local accounts cannot provide personalized information for many Windows 8.1 apps. If you want to take full advantage of the News, Weather, Sports, and Stock apps, for example, you don’t want to choose the local account option.

VALUE OF SEPARATE ACCOUNTS When you get your PC set up just the way you like, you may be hesitant to let anybody else use it. This goes doubly so for your grandchildren; you love ‘em, but don’t want them to mess up your computer with their games and tweeting and whatnot. This is where creating separate user accounts has value. Create a user account for each user of your PC—for you, your spouse, and each of your grandkids—and then make everybody sign in under their own personal accounts. Your grandkids can personalize their accounts however they want and there’s nothing they can break, and nothing they can change. The next time you sign in, everything should look just the way you left it—no matter who used >>>Go Further your computer in the meantime.

Setting Up a New Account on Your PC You create one user account when you first launch Windows on your new PC. At any time you can create additional user accounts for other people using your computer. 78 Chapter 4 Setting Up User Accounts

Set Up a New User with a Microsoft Account By default, Windows will use an exist- ing Microsoft Account to create your 1 new Windows user account. So if you have an Outlook.com, Hotmail, Mail, Xbox Live, Windows Phone, or other Microsoft account, you can use that account to sign into Windows on your computer.

1 From the Start screen, press Windows+C to display the Charms Bar.
