Hippotragus equinus – Roan Antelope authorities as there may be no significant genetic differences between the two. Many of the Roan Antelope in South Africa are H. e. cottoni or equinus x cottoni (especially on private properties). Assessment Rationale This charismatic antelope exists at low density within the assessment region, occurring in savannah woodlands and grasslands. Currently (2013–2014), there are an observed 333 individuals (210–233 mature) existing on nine formally protected areas within the natural distribution range. Adding privately protected subpopulations and an Cliff & Suretha Dorse estimated 0.8–5% of individuals on wildlife ranches that may be considered wild and free-roaming, yields a total mature population of 218–294 individuals. Most private Regional Red List status (2016) Endangered subpopulations are intensively bred and/or kept in camps C2a(i)+D*†‡ to exclude predators and to facilitate healthcare. Field National Red List status (2004) Vulnerable D1 surveys are required to identify potentially eligible subpopulations that can be included in this assessment. Reasons for change Non-genuine: While there was an historical crash in Kruger National Park New information (KNP) of 90% between 1986 and 1993, the subpopulation Global Red List status (2008) Least Concern has since stabilised at c. 50 individuals. Connochaetes gnou – Black Wildebeest Blue Wildebeest (C. taurinus) (Grobler et al. 2005 and ongoing work at the University of the Free State and the National Zoological Gardens), which is most likely due to the historic bottlenecks experienced by C. gnou in the late 1800s. The evolution of a distinct southern endemic Black Wildebeest in the Pleistocene was associated with, and possibly driven by, a shift towards a more specialised kind of territorial breeding behaviour, which can only function in open habitat. Thus, the evolution of the Black Wildebeest was directly associated with the emergence of Highveld-type open grasslands in the central interior of South Africa (Ackermann et al. 2010). Are Protected Areas Save Havens for Threatened Species in Cameroon? Case of Banyang-Mbo Wildlife Sanctuary, South Western Cameroon

Accepted 20 December, 2013 A hunting survey was conducted in the Banyang-Mbo Wildlife Sanctuary and support zones to estimate bushmeat off-take as a means to understand the current conservation status of protected species in that important area of biodiversity in Cameroon. A total of 756 protected animal carcasses with a total biomass of 6,815 kg, in six taxonomic groups constituted 24% of the total off-take of animals killed or captured by two adjacent ethnic groups of Banyang-Mbo Wildlife Sanctuary. Hunters caught more than 30 individuals of each of the red eared monkey (Cercopithecus erythrotis camerunensis), squirrel sp. (Protexerus stangeri, Funisciurus pyrropus), brush-tailed porcupine (Atherurus africanus), Water chevrotain (Hyemoschus aquaticus) African dwarf crocodile (Osteolaemus tetraspis), red river hog (Potamoschus porcus) and bay duiker (Cephalophus dorsalis) which together accounted for 75% of all protected species captures and 89% of the biomass. There was significant variation in the number of protected species exploited with the most captured taxonomic group, the rodents, comprising 37% of the kills or captures and 13% of the total biomass. -

They also make up a large proportion of emerging infectious diseases. (2) Methods: A scoping review of peer-reviewed publications was performed and based on the guidelines set out in the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) extension for scoping reviews. (3) Results: The final set of publications consisted of 145 publications. Thirty-two viruses were identified in the publications and 50 African ungulates were reported/diagnosed with viral infections. Eighteen countries had viruses diagnosed in wild ungulates reported in the literature. (4) Conclusions: A comprehensive review identified several areas where little information was available and recommendations were made. It is recommended that governments and research institutions offer more funding to investigate and report viral diseases of greater clinical and zoonotic significance. A further recommendation is for appropriate One Health approaches to be adopted for investigating, controlling, managing and preventing diseases. Diseases which may threaten the conservation of certain wildlife species also require focused attention. -

We can Keep Learning, there are hundreds of web pages, book and tv programmes dedicated to deer. Deer have been part of human culture for thousands of years, we can learn what our ancestors thought of them and how we can live alongside them today. Although they are secretive and hard to see Deer area actually all around us, and are vital to the ecosystem we all share but we rarely Take Notice and look very closely at them. It’s amazing how much we miss out in nature when we just walk through without paying attention to what is around us. We can Give by giving ourselves a break from the drama of the current events and focusing on the little things around us that give us pleasure and by sharing these with others, in person or online. -

P Abstract: Mouse deer are graceful and look somewhat like large rodents also known as chevrotains. Mouse deer (Tragulus spp. An Hyemoschus aquaticus) are among the smallest ruminants known. The lesser mouse deer of Southeast Asia is probably the smallest an adult stands only 20cm high and weighs a mere 1-2.5 kg. Within India, the Indian chevrotain is commonly encountered in a number of forest areas along the Western Ghats, in the Eastern Ghats up to Orissa, and in the forests of central India. The Kalakad-Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve at the extreme south of the Western Ghats appears to be one of the best localities for the species and may represent a major population stronghold. The species may also be frequently met with in most other protected areas along the Western Ghats such as the Periyar Tiger Reserve, Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary, Silent Valley, Mudumalai-Bandipur-Nagarahole, Bhadra, and Kudremukh. Krishnan (1972) noted that the species is seen almost commonly around Karwar and in some forests of the Simlipal hills of Orissa in the east. -

Pygmy Chimpanzees
- W - \ Pygmy Chimpanzees Alison and Noel Badrian Between August 1974 and July 1975 the authors spent eleven months in Zaire, six of them in an isolated tract of rain forest in the Equateur region studying the ecology and behaviour of bonobos, or pygmy chimpanzees. They urge the need to establish a reserve to protect bonobos, mainly because of threats to their habitat, and suggest an area in the Lomako Forest that is also rich in other wildlife. The bonobo or pygmy chimpanzee was first described in 1929 by Schwarz as a new race of chimpanzee, Pan satyrus paniscus.9 After a study of museum specimens Coolidge gave them species status as Pan paniscus.3 Bonobos are small and slender, with a body weight about half that of chimpanzees. Their long, fine body hair is black except for the white circum- anal tuft visible in many adults. Their heads are more rounded than the chimpanzee's, with smaller supraorbital ridges and a less developed muzzle, and the ears are smaller and almost completely covered by long, thick cheek whiskers. The hair on the crown is shorter than on the rest of the head but they have no bald patch. Even in infants all exposed skin, except the lips and the anogenital area, is black, and about half the museum specimens and zoo animals have webbing between the second and third pedal digits; this is less common among chimpanzees. JURIDICAL DATAl Owned by the Government of Zaire, and managed by the Institut Zarrois pour la Conservation de la Nature (IZCN). The national park was established in November 1970, and is defined in law as lune reserve naturelle integrale l • 3. IDENTIFICATION, The park comprises a large section (36,000 sq km) of the central basin of the Zaire River, a very isolated region only accessible by water transport. It is in the Congo Rain Forest Biogeographical Province with main topographic features being plateaux and river terraces. Rivers in the northwest are large and meandering with marshy banks but on the higher ground in the east, valleys are deeper and rivers run below cliff s of 80m. The southern sector of the park includes the watershed between the basin of the Luilaka to the north and east, Likoro to the west and Lukenje to the south. Soils are a thin humus layer over Kalahari sands with several lateritic flushes. Altitude in the Northern Sector ranges from approximately 350m in the West to 530m in the East, the Southern Sector varies from 350m in the Northwest to 700m in the Southeast. -
