  • 'Not Flooded' Claim an April Fool's Joke? Malaysiakini.Com April 3
MBSA’s ‘not flooded’ claim an April Fool’s joke? Malaysiakini.com April 3, 2007 Dr Jacob George The Consumers Association of Subang and Shah Alam Selangor (Cassa) Selangor is totally disillusioned and shocked at the statement by the Shah Alam City Hall for claiming in a Bernama report on April 1 that the Taman Tun Dr Ismail Jaya ‘housing estate was not flooded and the situation with the Sungei Damansara was normal’ following heavy rains on Sunday, April 1'. The statement by Shah Alam City Hall’s (MBSA) public relations officer is misleading, totally irresponsible, mischievous and slanted and cannot be allowed to stand. The fact is that both the Sungei Kuning and Sungei Damasara that cut through the Taman TTDI Jaya housing estate had overflowed, threatening the residents here. The strange and bizarre mix of both river and rain water collecting in the choked and clogged housing estate drains had overflowed resulting in several homes damaged by flood waters. Worse still, roads leading into the said housing estate - which includes portions of the NKVE and the Federal Highway at Batu Tiga - were also under more than 24 cm of flood waters, causing huge jams. Cassa investigations on the ground found that water levels at both the rivers were alarmingly high. The available pumps placed at two points nor the on-going remedial works were adequate to deal with the floods waters. Only proactive and quick thinking by residents there saved most of their vehicles which were moved to higher ground. Questions are now raised if the two bridges leading into the housing estate are now damaged as cracks have been seen appearing on them.

  • Sports Facilities Development Towards Sustainable Community: a Case Study of Kuala Lumpur
SPORTS FACILITIES DEVELOPMENT TOWARDS SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITY: A CASE STUDY OF KUALA LUMPUR 1Maassoumeh Barghchi, 1Dasimah bt Omar, and 2Mohd Salleh Aman 1Department of Town and Regional Planning, Faculty of Architecture, Planning & Surveying Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Shah Alam, 40450 Selangor, Malaysia 2Sports Centre, University of Malaya (UM), 50603 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Abstract Sports and sports facilities development have improved rapidly over the past years in Malaysia. However, such improvements are inadequate compared to the overall development of sports at international level. In recent years sport is getting more and more influential and it will continue to grow in importance, even for developing countries. Increase in the amount of public money being spent on sports facilities, at the same time, increase in the number of sports facilities as well as increasingly importance of sustainability necessitate demand to investigate issues surrounding sports facilities development especially in Kuala Lumpur as the regional and national centre for sporting activities. The long-term benefits to cities and local communities need to achieve more initiative by decision-makers. However, sustainability is more important for sports facilities due to requirement of huge money for construction, ancillary needs and constant maintenance costs. This research aims to examine the effectiveness and intangible benefits of sports facilities in Kuala Lumpur through residents' perceptions. Four case studies each selected from one of the four managing zones of sports facilities developed by Kuala Lumpur City Hall provide information for this research. The research able to rank the case studies based on residents' perception towards their attitude about facilities and programmes, using of the facilities, and respondents’ willingness to pay.

  • Towards a Sustainable Landscape of Urban Parks in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia: a Study from a Management Perspective
Towards a sustainable landscape of urban parks in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia: A study from a management perspective By: Roziya Ibrahim A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Social Science in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Landscape University of Sheffield United Kingdom May 2016 ABSTRACT Kuala Lumpur’s urban parks have evolved to fulfil the needs of its multi-cultural urban communities since the conception of its first public park in the late 19th century. Nevertheless, the management and maintenance of these tropical urban parks are currently under pressure as local authorities have no longer adequate funding to maintain the existing landscape as they have to focus on addressing the impact of environmental problems; particularly frequent flooding that has been a never-ending issue facing the city. There are growing pressures on resources, especially on water supply, in response to urbanization and population growth. Nevertheless, Kuala Lumpur’s urban parks were highly dependent on potable water for landscape maintenance at a time of growing demand for this limited resource. There is a possibility that these urban parks can be managed in a more sustainable manner, which may consequently reduce their dependency on potable water resource for irrigation. They might also make a more positive contribution to managing stormwater control and increasing habitat diversity. The challenge, therefore, is to try and achieve a more sustainable, ecologically informed design and management practice without alienating park users, management, and maintenance staff. This research aims to investigate the potential of changing the design and management of Kuala Lumpur’s urban parks towards a more ecologically sustainable landscape practice.

  • An Assessment of Current Practices on Landslides Risk Management: a Case of Kuala Lumpur Territory
GEOGRAFIA Online TM Malaysian Journal of Society and Space 13 issue 2 (1-12) © 2017, ISSN 2180-2491 1 An Assessment of Current Practices on Landslides Risk Management: A Case of Kuala Lumpur Territory Anas Alnaimat 1, Lam Kuok Choy 2, Mokhtar Jaafar 2 1Environmental Management Programme, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Bangi, 43600 Selangor, Malaysia 2Social, Environmental and Developmental Sustainability Research Centre, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, 43600 Bangi, Selangor, Malaysia Correspondence: Anas Alnaimat ([email protected]) Abstract In Kuala Lumpur to date, there is little evidence to support landslide causes and very little research into the nature of landslide vulnerability. This article takes an interdisciplinary method and empirical approaches to examine, in addition where necessary, challenge a series of assumptions made regarding Landslide Risk Management (LRM) with a view to developing better understanding of social vulnerability on landslide hazard and its underlying causes alongside combine expert judgment on triggering factors. Moreover, the contribution of Malaysia Public Works Department (PWD/JKR) via the implication of National Slope Master Plan (NSMP 2009-2023) operational capabilities and its effectiveness on landslide risk mitigation measures is reviewed. The finding on the influence of landslide causative and triggering factors have shown steepness of slope was greatly functioned as a landslide primary causative factor on mass movement whereas, in Kuala Lumpur rainfall and human activities plays significant role in triggering landslide on a slope vulnerable to failure. The result suggests occupants of landslide prone areas have decent perceptions of landslide and its associated risk. Contrary wise, a loss of confidence by local residents on government authorities on implementing appropriate hazard mitigation measures, lack of voluntary data sharing and insufficiency public awareness campaigns conducted by Malaysian local authorities.

  • An Economic Valuation of Urban Green Spaces in Kuala Lumpur City
Pertanika J. Soc. Sci. & Hum. 26 (1): 469 - 490 (2018) SOCIAL SCIENCES & HUMANITIES Journal homepage: http://www.pertanika.upm.edu.my/ An Economic Valuation of Urban Green Spaces in Kuala Lumpur City Nur Syafiqah, A. S.1, A. S. Abdul-Rahim1*, Mohd Johari, M. Y.2 and Tanaka, K.3 1Department of Economics, Faculty Economics and Management, Universiti Putra Malaysia, 43400 UPM, Serdang, Selangor, Malaysia 2Department of Landscape Architecture, Faculty of Design and Architecture, Universiti Putra Malaysia, 43400 UPM, Serdang, Selangor, Malaysia 3Research Centre for Sustainability and Environment, Shiga University, Japan ABSTRACT An economic value of urban green space (UGS) in Kuala Lumpur (KL) city is estimated in this study. A global model and a local model are formulated based on hedonic price method. The global and local models were analysed with an Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression and a Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) respectively. Both the models were compares to see which model offered a better result. The results of OLS regression illustrated that Titiwangsa and Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) offer the highest economic value for model 2 and 3 respectively. The results of GWR determined that the economic value of an UGS can be analysed by the region. The GWR result revealed that FRIM provides high economic value to all the residential areas in KL city. However, the economic value of Titiwangsa is not valuable for the residential areas in KL city including Mont Kiara Pines, Jinjang Selatan, Segambut Garden, Bandar Menjalara and Taman Bukit Maluri. As a conclusion, even though Titiwangsa generates the highest economic value, it is only significant at certain residential areas as proved by the local model.
