Head Coach Lorenzo Romar: In only four years, Lorenzo Romar has elevated Washington to the elite level of . UW earned three straight NCAA Tournaments berths for just the second time in school history and advanced to consecutive Sweet 16s for the first time. Romar was honored at the Final Four as the winner of the John Wooden “Keys to Life” Award following a 2006 season in which he directed the Huskies to a 26-7 record. UW was 13-5 in Pac-10 play, finishing as the conference runner-up for the third straight season. UW won two NCAA tournament games before an overtime setback against top-seed Connecticut. Romar already ranks fifth among all-time Washington coaches with 84 victories. He guided the Huskies to a 29-6 record in 2005, tying the 1938 squad for the highest win total in school history. After receiving their first ever No. 1 seed, the Huskies posted two NCAA Tournament victories and advanced to the Sweet 16. Romar was named the 2005 Pac-10 Coach of the Year. He was voted the district Coach of the Year and the Black Coaches Association National Coach of the Year. Romar directed a spectacular turnaround during his second season. UW posted a 19-12 record in 2004 and participated in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1999. Romar coached the Huskies to their first second-place regular-season finish since 1986 and their first Pac-10 Tournament championship game appearance since 1987. After opening the conference campaign with an 0-5 record, UW reeled off 12 wins in its final 13 Pac-10 outings. Capping the run was a 75-62 triumph over No. 1 and previously undefeated Stanford in the final regular- season game. In 2003, Romar guided the Huskies to a 10-17 record. He was named to head up the program at his alma mater on April 3, 2002. A point guard for the Huskies’ 1978-79 and 1979-80 teams, he is the 18th head coach in UW’s 104-year history and the first African-American to lead the program. In his 10th season overall, Romar has compiled a 177-130 record as a head coach, including an 84-42 mark in four years at Washington. In three years at Saint Louis from 1999-2002, he compiled a 51-44 (.537) mark. He led Pepperdine to a three-year record of 42- 44 (.488) from 1996-99, including a pair of second-place finishes in the West Coast Conference and an NIT invitation in 1999. His first Saint Louis squad upset top-ranked Cincinnati en route to the Conference USA tournament title and automatic NCAA Tournament berth. Seattle was the site of one of Romar’s greatest coaching moments. As an assistant coach, he helped guide UCLA to an 89-78 triumph over Arkansas in the Kingdome to win the 1995 NCAA Championship. Romar built a reputation as one of the nation’s top recruiters while an assistant at UCLA (1992-1996) and was credited with recruiting much of the talent that formed the core of the Bruins’ title team. UCLA’s record during Romar’s four-year assistant coaching tenure was 97-28 (.776). A native of Compton, Calif., Romar graduated from Pius X High School. He earned his associate degree from Cerritos (Calif.) Community College in 1978 before studying at Washington from 1978-80. He completed his coursework at Cincinnati, receiving his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice in 1992. After starting two seasons at UW for legendary coach Marv Harshman, Romar was selected in the seventh round of the 1980 NBA Draft by the . His five-year NBA career included stints with Golden State (1981-84), Milwaukee (1984) and Detroit (1984-85). Following the 1984-85 season, Romar joined Athletes in Action (AIA), a touring exhibition team on which he served as player-coach from 1989-1992. Quoting Head Coach Lorenzo Romar Would you comment on the loss of several key players the last two seasons, including three who have been drafted? “We have been very fortunate to have participated in three consecutive NCAA tournaments and two Sweet 16s. If that happens that usually is the result that players are going to get drafted and go to the NBA, because if you didn’t have players of that caliber you probably wouldn’t be winning those types of games. I think we just have to continue to work and continue to recruit. If we are able to sustain the level that we are, then those types of things will continue to happen. So I think that is a good thing.” On the three straight NCAA Tournament appearances establishing a higher standard for UW basketball? “There is a certain amount of pride that takes place to where Husky basketball is associated with doing things right and winning. You don’t want to be the group that is going the other way, so there is some pressure to be competitive and win. We do have some players that played last year and they have that experience. They will be examples for those that are coming in to see what kind of culture it is here at the University of Washington. Hopefully the foundation is laid for how we go about taking care of our business.” Early on, in your first couple of years you had really young teams and now your team is young again. How will this season’s youthful team avoid the struggles of your first UW team? “It will be different because last time guys were learning us and we were learning them. They were learning the system. Now these guys, even the young guys coming in, know how things work around here. They understand there is a certain culture that has been established here. I think as good as the players were when they were young, I think that this group now is probably a little more talented then the first group when they were young. So we just have to grow together again, but it is not like we are starting from scratch like before. We will experience some tough times early I think, because we are so young.” How do you plan to transition the new players into the playing rotation? “We’ll throw them out there and let guys make mistakes early and let them learn from their mistakes. About the time you get to conference play, your players are a little more seasoned.” How important on a young team is it to return a point guard like Justin Dentmon that started the entire season last year? “It’s huge, really huge. Not only was he a starter, but he played quality minutes and played in NCAA tournament games. He has had the ball in his hands down the stretch of important games. He has been in every perceivable situation in terms of experience so it helps out a great deal.” What do you expect from sophmore forward Jon Brockman this season? “I think that Jon Brockman will be one of the more improved players in our league this year. Jon was somewhat like Brandon Roy two years ago in that Brandon deferred to his teammates because he is so unselfish. And then, when those guys moved on you saw what Brandon did. I think that Jon, out there with four seniors and other guys that were talented, most of the time he would defer to those guys. This year he will step up. He is more experienced and I think that people will see he will have a really good year.” What are your thoughts on the incoming recruiting class that was ranked among the top-five nationally? “We’re extremely happy to have signed this class. We feel that we got a great mixture of a winning mentality, high level of talent and high level of character with this group.” What kind of impact do you expect freshman center Spencer Hawes to have? “We expect him to make an immediate impact, We have not had someone who can step in and do the things that he does with his size. As a 7-footer, he is able to score on the low and able to pass the basketball with a good feel. He is really going to help us. It is unfair to say that just because Spencer Hawes is here that we will be a Final Four team, I don’t think that is fair at all and I don’t think that is fair to Spencer. Spencer is still learning just like everyone else is learning. He will definitely be someone that will make an impact as a freshman. What about the rest of your highly rated class of incoming freshmen? “Phil Nelson, Quincy Pondexter and Adrian Oliver; those guys are all players that can come in and contribute. They all really understand how to play the game. We are just really excited about these guys.” What are the strengths of this year’s team? “For the first time since we have been at Washington we have size. We will have size without sacrificing quickness. This team has really good chemistry even though they are young. I think that this team will really play well together.” Now that you have size, what style will you implement? “We’ll play the same way, running the floor and defending. It will stay the same. We had size down in San Antonio with the USA (under-18) Team. We played that way and it was successful.” What is the main concern for this year’s team? “Just our youth. We’re concerned about our youth and how long it is going to take us to catch on and be the top team that we think that we can be.” What are your goals or expectations for this year’s team? “The goal is to maximize our ability for the year and our expectation is that we are playing our best basketball by the end of the season.” TENTATIVE 2006-07 Washington Basketball Schedule Day Date Opponent Location Time Fri.
