With two marketing degrees from the Griffith Business School between them, where better for Marissa Bowden and Sarah Schoeller to take their skills than the markets? That’s exactly what the Gold Coast fashion lovers did when their careers took a hit during the Global Financial Crisis. After identifying a business niche they knew they were well-equipped to fill, the pair set up The Village Markets on the Gold Coast in 2008. ‘We shared a love of interstate fashion markets like Sydney’s Paddington, Bondi and Glebe, where one-off finds and emerging designer labels were in abundance,’ says Sarah. ‘We followed our hearts and started the first emerging designer and vintage market on the Gold Coast.’ Their creative idea blossomed and the Village Markets is now a Gold Coast institution, helping to launch the international careers of other designers and artists.

After being named on the Forbes 30 under 30 list, the online entrepreneurs say their commercial success is due in no small way to their business degrees, after their fashion blog triggered a phenomenal response while they were students at Griffith. ‘When we created Sabo Skirt, we started with a detailed business plan, very similar to those we completed throughout our business degrees. This enabled us to predict, prepare and plan what was required in order to take our online store from an idea to a working concept. It was such a blessing that we were able to use our studies in such a fulfilling way and so soon after graduating.’ The founders of Sabo Skirt say they capitalised on Instagram after recognising its marketing potential at a very early stage. The benefits and opportunities from studying a double degree at Griffith have helped take Sara Doole around the world. Sara now works as the Account Manager at Vancouver-based online course provider Thinkific, but she was jet-setting before she’d even graduated. ‘I was lucky enough to study in Leeds, England in my second year,’ Sara says. ‘That opportunity has really influenced my career in ways I didn’t anticipate when I first signed up for the program. Many employers mention this during interviews, and I know it sets me apart from my colleagues.’ Sara recalls her time at the University fondly, highlighting the passion of Griffith’s leaders from lecturers to program heads. ‘Those people saw promise in me and reached out a hand to help me build my experience and knowledge,’ she says. ‘Without their faith in me, I wouldn’t have gotten the work experience necessary to set me on the career path I am on.’ Sara Doole Bachelor of Psychological Science/Bachelor of Business (Human Resources) Double degrees with humanities

Matthew Williams was a finalist in the Lawyers’ Weekly “30 Under 30” Awards. As one of ten finalists in the category of dispute resolution, he was the only Gold Coast based finalist in a nationwide competition. Matthew attributes his career success to Griffith’s practical learning experiences and being taught by lecturers leading in their respective fields. ‘The relationships that I established with staff and colleagues have been invaluable to my career progression,’ he says. Matthew is currently a Senior Associate at HW Litigation, Vice President of the Southport Chamber of Commerce, and a member of the Gold Coast District Law Association and Australian and New Zealand Sports Law Association. Matthew Williams Bachelor of Laws/Bachelor of Business (Finance) Remarkable outcomes Griffith Law School graduate Christopher Flynn’s legal expertise has seen him provide advice to government and private clients in more than 50 countries. Chris is now partner at top tier Sydney-based law firm Gilbert + Tobin, renowned for their significant focus on social justice. Chris has played a lead role in some of the country’s recent most high-profile cases, including heading the legal team responsible for the successful release of journalist Peter Greste, who was detained in Egypt for 400 days, and supporting the council assisting in the Chan and Sukumaran capital punishment cases. ‘While studying at Griffith, it struck me that Griffith Law School was out to achieve something very different from other law schools. The subjects were different, the course structure was different, the students were different and even the staff were different. Little did I know at the time that, in the great vehicle for change that is the law, we were learning about the vehicle’s engine, while my friends at other universities were looking at the dashboard. It became abundantly clear when I started to practise law that legal problems don’t easily fit into the tightly structured subject groupings of traditional law schools, and the education I had at Griffith Law School allows you to embrace the law as a means for improving society and making a contribution towards achieving better outcomes for everybody,’ Chris says.
