ANTI-LITTER CAMPAIGN Helen Holman has been working with local village and school children in an anti-litter campaign. A competition was held for the children to produce posters to advertise the campaign and this was judged by John Hambly, a previous chair of the Parish Council, helped by Debra Panikkar, the current chair of the Parish Council, and Judith Harper, a local artist. Their posters, and of course the winning ones, were displayed outside the Parish Hall on Thursday the 22nd of July. (See article page 7) 2 Chairman’s Letter

5 6 Ellesborough Anti-Litter Campaign

Following the recent successful litter picks, we would like to applaud the community spirit, with volunteers of all ages keen to get involved in the clear up operation. John Hambly had a wonderful idea, to hold a competition for children to produce posters, to advertise the anti-litter campaign. Helen Holman pursued this project by working with the local village children and pupils from Great Kimble School and coordinated the seventy-two entries for the competition. Each carefully crafted work of art were laminated and displayed on the railings outside Ellesborough Parish Hall to raise awareness of this escalating issue.

The competition was judged by John Hambly, a previous chair of the Parish Council, helped by Debra Panikkar, the current chair of the Parish Council and Judith Harper, a local artist. The judges were really impressed with all the entries and thanked the children for their artistic efforts. Ellesborough residents are fed up with the amount and type of litter, with the majority of it, consisting mainly of fast food and drinks packaging. We would also like to thank the litter picking efforts of some of our residents and David Harper explained, “Over 30 bags of rubbish were collected during the recent clear up and it was obvious from where it was dropped that 80% was from car windows!” Look out for the children’s posters and banners positioned around the parish and take heed of their messages to NOT DROP LITTER!!

Photos of winning age categories are shown below:

Our efforts over recent years are really paying off. In recognition of this, the TY area around the Church is designated by the local authority as a Local Wild Life Site.

To encourage wild flowers it is important to carefully time the two cuts of the grass, once in high summer and again in the autumn. Crucial to the process is letting the seeds ripen and fall and then raking up the hay to ensure that the soil is not enriched and for this we are so grateful for the sterling efforts of the group of our local volunteers.
