Dear Laurie, I Am Delighted That Salford University Are So Committed British Broadcasting Corporation Room 5168 White City 201 Wood Lane London W12 7TS BBC at MediaCityUK Professor Laurie Wood Executive Director Enterprise & Development Faraday House The University Of Salford Salford M5 4WT 5th January 2009 Dear Laurie, I am delighted that Salford University are so committed to developing a campus at MediaCityUK on Salford Quays. As you know the BBC are planning the biggest shift in people, production and power in our history by moving five departments to Salford – BBC Sport, BBC Children’s, 5 Live, parts of Future Media & Technology and BBC formal learning. These departments will join the current BBC Manchester operations to create a forward-looking presence for the BBC on one of the most significant media developments in the world. A strong physical academic presence in the form of Salford University will do much to stimulate that development, helping it to become a more diverse digital city. The BBC has established relationships with a number of HEIs in the North and the physical location of the University of Salford on MediaCityUK can provide the logical gateway for other HEIs to engage with the site. In addition Salford will provide a valuable contribution to the talent pool, research agenda and community engagement at MediaCityUK for both the BBC and other media and digital businesses. The close relationship between our two organisations has already resulted in a number of mutually beneficial collaborations across a range of disciplines from research and course development to engagement with schools through BBC Blast. Our co-location on MediaCityUK will hopefully allow us to continue and build upon these collaborations. I wish you every success with your plans for MediaCityUK and very much look forward to working with you. Yours sincerely, Genevieve Lawrence Joint Programme Director, BBC at MediaCityUK .

HnHENGINEERING OVERVIEW 1991 has been a productive and rewarding year for Engineers throughout the Corporation. Important projects that have come to fruition include the Broadcasting Centre at Southampton, the Blackstaff development in Belfast, the Millbank parliamentary broadcasting facility, the new Manchester vehicle maintenance base, Television Centre Stage V, Skelton C HF station, and many more, as detailed in the following pages. The year will also be remembered for notable progress on the digital front. The new D3 digital video recorder is rapidly becoming established as the main post production machine, and high quality digital stereo television sound is now available to more than 70% of the BBC's audience via NlCAM 728. However the most notable 'digital event' of 1991 could turn out to be the Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) demon- strations that we mounted in Birmingham in July. These demonstrations showed that DAB can deliver CD-quality digital sound to fixed, portable, or car receivers, even in inhospitable reception areas. Some difficulties remain to be overcome, including the need to get agreement on a frequency assignment for new DAB radio services. Nevertheless, most of those attending the demonstrations were convinced that they had witnessed a major technical advance in sound broad- casting, whose introduction cannot long be delayed. TRANSMISSIO TRANSMISSION OPERATIONS As a result of the Broadcasting Act, the transmission responsibilities previously discharged by the IBA United Kingdom have been taken over by a private company, National Skelton C, opened in May 1991 by Mark Transcommunications Limited (NTL). Centre for Cultural Policy Research Department of Theatre, Film and Television University of Glasgow Glasgow G12 8QQ December 2008 © Caitriona Noonan, 2008 Abstract This thesis examines the way in which media professionals negotiate the occupational challenges related to television and radio production. It has used the subject of religion and its treatment within the BBC as a microcosm to unpack some of the dilemmas of contemporary broadcasting. In recent years religious programmes have evolved in both form and content leading to what some observers claim is a “renaissance” in religious broadcasting. However, any claims of a renaissance have to be balanced against the complex institutional and commercial constraints that challenge its long-term viability. This research finds that despite the BBC’s public commitment to covering a religious brief, producers in this style of programming are subject to many of the same competitive forces as those in other areas of production. Furthermore those producers who work in-house within the BBC’s Department of Religion and Ethics believe that in practice they are being increasingly undermined through the internal culture of the Corporation and the strategic decisions it has adopted. This is not an intentional snub by the BBC but a product of the pressure the Corporation finds itself under in an increasingly competitive broadcasting ecology, hence the removal of the protection once afforded to both the department and the output.

  • BT's Response to Review of the Rules for Prominence of Psbs and Local TV
BT response to Ofcom’s review of the rules for prominence of PSBs and local TV October 2018 Confidential working draft Ofcom PSB Prominence Review Overview Why this matters to BT BT is in a unique position to comment on the issue of PSB prominence. Across our three brands – BT, EE and Plusnet – we have a presence in around half of all UK households. As a broadcaster, a TV platform, and a provider of broadband and mobile phone services, we are able to consider how customers access content across a range of different platforms and devices. We are a shareholder, affiliate ISP and content provider in the YouView platform. We’re also an important content-aggregator, with commercial partnerships in place with providers including AMC, Netflix, Amazon and Sky (for the future launch of Now TV). Our aim is to ensure that our customers have access to an extensive content offering from a range of different sources, including the UK PSBs. We continue to invest in sport content, with innovation at the heart of everything that we do. This includes the launch of the UK’s first dedicated 4K UHD channel in 2015 and partnering with YouTube to simulcast the last two UEFA Champions League Finals. We value the role played by PSBs in delivering UK-centric content and PSB content remains incredibly popular with our customers. Current PSB prominence There are six channel listings per page on the YouView Electronic Programme Guide (EPG), which is used on the BT and Plusnet TV services. The decision to organise the platform in this way was made on the basis of audience expectation and commercial reasoning.

  • The Role of Psbs in the UK TV Production Sector
Small Screen: Big Debate Consultation – Annex 7. The role of PSBs in the UK TV production sector A7. The role of PSBs in the UK TV production sector Overview The TV production sector is a UK success story. The skill base of UK TV production companies has attracted valuable inward investment and global sales of UK programmes have boosted the image of the UK. The UK TV production sector consists of a mixture of large and small independent producers which operate alongside production companies owned by UK broadcasters. This successful production sector has attracted significant inward investment, from foreign broadcasters and streaming services. The UK independent TV production sector is not a product of the market alone; it has been supported and nurtured by the rules and obligations placed on the PSBs over the years. Rules on external commissioning, IP rights and regional quotas have played a vital role in the emergence and development of the independent TV production sector in the UK. UK TV production industry A7.1 The UK TV production sector has changed dramatically over the last 20 years. In 2004, the Public Service Broadcasters (PSBs) accounted for around 87% of all UK commissions.1 The PSBs also dominated content production, accounting for over half (56%) of all UK production.2 A7.2 Fast forward to now, the sector is diverse, competitive, and internationally successful. It has almost doubled in size over this period with commissioning spend on UK productions estimated to range between £4.5bn and £5bn in 2018.3 A7.3 In 2018, UK producers were responsible for almost half of all peak-time shows in major international markets.4 Formats such as Love Island and Strictly Come Dancing/Dancing with the Stars and The Office originated in the UK and have gone on to be global hits.
