Hail, holy Queen, Mother of mercy, hail, our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To you we cry, the children of Eve; to you we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this land of exile. Turn, then, most gracious advocate, your eyes of mercy toward us; lead us home at last and show us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus: O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary. Salve Regina Recite the prayer and Scripture passage on page 175. Discuss the “What Do You Wonder?” questions. 1 [10 min] Catechism The Catechism of the Catholic Church is a book that contains all the main teachings of the Church. This book can answer a lot of questions you might have about our religion. There is a special Catechism called the YouCat, which stands for Youth Catechism. It is written in a question and answer format. Here are some examples: Read Question 154 on page 94. o What happens to us when we die? o Ask the children what they think the answer is before reading, then discuss. Read Question 374 on page 206. o Why is God more important than the family? o Ask the children what they think the answer is before reading, then discuss. Feel free to look up other questions. [10 min] Jesus Chooses a Leader (p. 176-177) Ask the students if they know who Jesus chose to be the leader of the Apostles. (Hint: he became the first Pope) Read pgs. 176-177 Ask the students what Jesus meant when he said, “Feed my lambs. Feed my sheep.” (Take care of my people) [15 min] The Church and You (p. 178-179) St. Peter was the leader of the apostles and Jesus made him the first Pope. The Magisterium is the teaching office of the Church, which is all of the bishops in union with the Pope. The Magisterium is guided by the Holy Spirit to reveal God’s truth and keep the whole Church faithful to Jesus’ teachings. The Precepts of the Church are the minimum requirements given by the Church leaders for deepening our relationship with God and the Church. o Attend Mass on Sundays and holy days. It is a mortal sin to skip Mass, unless you are sick. o Go to confession a least once a year (but it is better to go once a month). Show the class where the confessional is (by the upper level entrance of the building). Confession is heard every Saturday morning at 9:30. o Receive communion at least once a year during Easter time. If you have committed any mortal sins, you must go to confession before receiving communion. A mortal sin is committed when: It is something serious. (E.g. using God’s name in vain, not telling a priest all of your sins in confession, gossiping, bullying, disrespecting sacred things.) You know it is wrong. You do it anyway. o Fast on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and all Fridays in Lent. (When you are 14 and older) o Give your time, talents, and money to the Church. Discuss: o What can you do to live out the Precepts of the Church? 2 o Do you sometimes miss Mass? What can you do to make sure you attend every weekend? o Hand out the Precepts Poem and let them color it if there is time. Allow them to complete the Connect Your Faith activity (p. 179) [10 min] Our Catholic Life Read p. 180 and discuss ways to support our Parish and community.
