ERROL Barrow Week officially got under way yesterday with a church service at the Abundant Life Assembly, where the Prime Minister, The Rt. Hon. , along with several members of Parliament and dignitaries, joined the congregation to commemorate the life of the late Barbadian hero before the official Errol Barrow Day this Thursday, January 21. Speaking during the service, the Prime Minister pointed out that this year’s com- memoration of The Late Errol Walton Barrow coincides with 50 years of Independence for Barbados, for which Mr. Barrow fought. He therefore stated that this is an even more significant rea- son to celebrate. Addressing recent criticism about the cost associated with the year-long 50th anniversary celebrations, the PM stated, “In every society you will find people who know the cost of everything but do not know the value of anything”.To reiterate his point, he said that there are people who will not go to the doctor claiming that the price is too high, not realizing that the visit to the doctor can impact the value of their life. Such comments, according to Stuart, does not surprise him as there were also people who thought, in Barrow’s time, that we should not become independent because it costs too much. Yet, even though only a few fought for and won Independence, it benefitted each Barbadian; namely,in the establishment of many schools, maternal benefits and the National Insurance Scheme.

“IF you want God’s attention, you must humble yourself.” In speaking from Nehemiah Chapter 3, Pastor Kevin Hunte urged that the congregation be humble, just as Nehemiah was during his time as a cup- bearer to the King. Israel had been destroyed not because of the heart God; but because of the sin of the people, and because of Nehemiah’s humility in serving the King, favour was found on him and he was able to rebuild. It is like this ser- vant that Pastor Hunte says that Barbados should humble itself; if it wants to be restored to a place where A part of the congregation present for the commemoration service to launch Errol Barrow Week. there were fewer crimes and wrong do- ings. The two go hand in hand,” Pastor Hunte further explained. According to an official from the Ministry of Health, of the eight samples sent to the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) for testing, three were positive and five negative for the virus. The Zika infection is a mild, febrile viral illness transmitted by the bite of a Zika virus-carrying Aedes aegyti mosquito, which is the same mosquito which causes dengue fever and chikungunya. The main symptoms are fever, conjunctivitis, temporary arthritis, mainly in the small joints of the hands and feet, and a rash that often starts on the face and spreads throughout the body. In general, symptoms are mild and last between two and seven days. There is no vaccine or preventive drugs. Treatment is directed at alleviating symptoms. SEBASTIAN COE, the head of athletics’ crisis-hit governing body, says trust in the sport may not return until “way beyond” his four-year term as president of the IAAF. An independent commission of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) said in the second part of a damning report on Thursday that “corruption was embedded” at the International Association of Athletics Federations. The report, whose first part was published in November, said Coe’s predecessor, Lamine Diack, ran a clique that covered up organised doping and blackmailed athletes while senior officials looked the other way. Monday January 18, 2016 MORE SEEKING CHARITY THE Sandy Lane Charitable Trust has “had a very exciting year”, with that organisation funding over 115 needy causes during 2015. Speaking to The Barbados Advo- cate, Trustee of the Sandy Lane Chari- table Trust, Phillipa Challis said that or- ganisation is pleased to give its support to assist this nation’s children. She also said there has been “a dramatic increase” in individuals seeking assistance. “We greatly believe [in] what we are doing, and our focus is [for the] longevity of the Trust and the children’s charities that we support. “There are a great number of children’s charities now in Barbados. We are what they call a donor charity, and we sup- port over 40 small community organisa- tions, and lots of projects, that to be per- fectly honest, would not be able to func- tion without us – we are actually the sole donor.” Challis’ comments came during a brief interview with The Barbados Ad- vocate on Friday night at the Trust’s Awards Dinner, held at the Country Club, Sandy Lane. Among the guests at this event was Grand Patron and Trustee of the Sandy Lane Charitable Trust, Derrick Smith. In his official remarks, Smith thanked the several donors who have contributed to the Trust over the year. He also high- lighted some of the projects of the Trust in 2015, one of which was a partnership with The World Paediatric Project (WPP) and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH), to assist children with or- thopaedic needs. He made mention of plans to continue this project this year. “Our money is going to reach many more children. In 2016, we are going to have two orthopaedic surgical mis- sions… In the future, we are hoping to have a children’s cardiac mission.” Winners of the Sandy Lane Charitable Trust Golf Event 2016, Sue Magnier, Yvonne Brewer, Sir Garfield Sobers and Derrick REACH on Page 10 Smith.
