  • Press Release
Press Release The Ted Lewis Orchestra brings back the music of the “High-Hatted Tragedian of Song” with Joseph Rubin and his entertainers in The Rhythm Rhapsody Revue! Relive Ted Lewis’ famous hits, “When My Baby Smiles at Me,” “The St. Louis Blues,” “ The Sunny Side of the Street,” “The Tiger Rag,” “Medicine Man for the Blues,” and of course, “Me and My Shadow,” all in their original arrangements! With his trademark battered old top hat and his immortal catchphrase "Is Everybody Happy?" Ted Lewis captured the hearts of audiences for five decades. Unrivaled in popularity in the 1920s, 30s and 40s, Lewis drew standing room only houses wherever he played, breaking attendance records and drawing more people than Glenn Miller and Tommy Dorsey. Joseph Rubin, Director of the Ted Lewis Orchestra says, “We are very excited to bring the Ted Lewis Orchestra back on the road after a hiatus of 40 years!” Mr. Rubin notes that The Rhythm Rhapsody Revue is unique in big band entertainment, “we have not just a swinging band, but also a cast of extraordinary dancers, singers and entertainers, exactly like Ted had at the height of his popularity.” A consummate showman, Ted Lewis always surrounded himself with the tops in talent (Benny Goodman, Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey all got their start with Ted) and The Rhythm Rhapsody Revue continues that legacy. The Ted Lewis Orchestra deftly recreates Ted's touring stage revues, featuring a female singing trio, a dancer extraordinaire, Ted's famous shadow, a 13-piece orchestra and Joseph Rubin as Ted Lewis.

  • Los Angeles Times: Martha Tilton, 91; '40S Vocalist Know For
http://www.latimes.com/news/obituaries/la-me-tilton12dec12,0,2930884.story?coll=la-news-obituaries OBITUARIES Martha Tilton, 91; '40s vocalist know for 'And the Angels Sing' By Dennis McLellan Times Staff Writer December 12, 2006 Martha Tilton, a popular big-band vocalist best known for her recording of "And the Angels Sing" with the Benny Goodman orchestra in 1939, has died. She was 91. Known as "Liltin' Martha Tilton" during her 1940s heyday, Tilton died of natural causes Friday at her home in Brentwood, said her granddaughter Maura Smith. In the words of George T. Simon, author of the 1967 book "The Big Bands," Tilton was "a young, pretty and effervescent lass" when she was singing with the Jimmy Dorsey orchestra in the mid-1930s. Tilton didn't start recording, however, until she joined Benny Goodman in 1937. "To me, she was so unique because she didn't reinterpret the song that the composers gave her; she sang it straight, without her own styling or imprint on it," Chuck Cecil, longtime host of the Los Angeles-area radio show "The Swingin' Years," told The Times on Monday. "So many of them become song stylists and they sort of reinterpret the song," Cecil said, "but she sang it with clarity and with charm — and very successfully. I'd say one of the definitive records of the swing era was the song 'And the Angels Sing.' " During Tilton's time as vocalist with Goodman, the band made history when it performed the first-ever jazz concert at Carnegie Hall in 1938.

  • Gerry Mulligan Discography
GERRY MULLIGAN DISCOGRAPHY GERRY MULLIGAN RECORDINGS, CONCERTS AND WHEREABOUTS by Gérard Dugelay, France and Kenneth Hallqvist, Sweden January 2011 Gerry Mulligan DISCOGRAPHY - Recordings, Concerts and Whereabouts by Gérard Dugelay & Kenneth Hallqvist - page No. 1 PREFACE BY GERARD DUGELAY I fell in love when I was younger I was a young jazz fan, when I discovered the music of Gerry Mulligan through a birthday gift from my father. This album was “Gerry Mulligan & Astor Piazzolla”. But it was through “Song for Strayhorn” (Carnegie Hall concert CTI album) I fell in love with the music of Gerry Mulligan. My impressions were: “How great this man is to be able to compose so nicely!, to improvise so marvellously! and to give us such feelings!” Step by step my interest for the music increased I bought regularly his albums and I became crazy from the Concert Jazz Band LPs. Then I appreciated the pianoless Quartets with Bob Brookmeyer (The Pleyel Concerts, which are easily available in France) and with Chet Baker. Just married with Danielle, I spent some days of our honey moon at Antwerp (Belgium) and I had the chance to see the Gerry Mulligan Orchestra in concert. After the concert my wife said: “During some songs I had lost you, you were with the music of Gerry Mulligan!!!” During these 30 years of travel in the music of Jeru, I bought many bootleg albums. One was very important, because it gave me a new direction in my passion: the discographical part. This was the album “Gerry Mulligan – Vol. 2, Live in Stockholm, May 1957”.

Paul's magnum opus The Michigan Jazz Suite is a collection of 15 Keller compositions inspired by people, places and icons of the great state of Michigan. Featuring the Paul Keller Ensemble with titles like Big Mac, and Soo’s Blues, The Michigan Jazz Suite won the Detroit Music Award for Best Jazz Recording of 2008. In 2007 Keller created 15 original orchestra charts for clarinetist Dave Bennett’s symphonic Pops show A Salute to Benny Goodman. This show, composed for jazz band and full symphony orchestra has been performed by over 25 major US orchestras. Keller also wrote Bennett's second orchestra Pops show Clarinet Is King, featuring 10 new original Keller arrangements of songs from Artie Shaw, Pete Fountain, and Jimmy Dorsey.

JULY 2016 BIG BAND NEWS COMPILED BY MUSIC LIBRARIAN CHRISTOPHER POPA WELCOME BACK, in this issue: THE GREAT ESCAPE! The Great Escape! returns Recently I was happy to see that Bob Knack new swing and sweet and friends have returned with issue no.32 of compact discs The Great Escape! The online newsletter gets itineraries for The its name from a quotation from Woody Herman, Count Basie and Glenn who said, “Anything that is good jazz is a great Miller Orchestras escape. When you’re involved in playing or birthdays listening to great jazz, no one can get to you.” I was worried that, because there had been a long delay since the previous issue of The Great Escape!, perhaps there would be no more. Each issue always has interesting articles, facts, trivia, letters, and opinions. Some of my favorite articles have included remembrances of the legendary bandleaders, their sidemen, and singers. For example, among the variety of big band vocalists you’ll run across are Martha Tilton, Lynn,Roberts, Buddy Hughes, Walt Andrus, Bea Wain, Gail Reese, Lynn Allison, Fran Warren, and Jack Leonard, to name a few. Do you recognize their names and know of the bands they sang with? Besides Mr. Knack, over the years many knowledgeable people have written for The Great Escape! A sampling would include Perry Huntoon, George Spink, Phil Holdman, Joe Carlton, Chuck Sengstock, Warren Ketter, Larry Maloney, Dick Parker, Ray Krysl, John Macek, Dennis DiBlasio, Bill Spilka, Dick Parker, Karl Kountz, Joe Spery, and Phil McCurnin. All this good started with “The Browsers,” a radio program dedicated to the big bands.
