GUESTS IN ATTENDANCE: Cori Close, UCLA, PAC-12 Conference Diane Dickman, ethics project leader, Governance Working Group, NCAA Maureen Harty, associate director of academic and membership affairs, NCAA Lynn Holzman, vice president of women’s basketball, NCAA Bill Levisay, strategic consultant Binh Nguyen, associate director of academic and membership affairs, NCAA Polly Thomason, University of Texas at Dallas, WBCA Board of Directors, NCAA DIII legislative chair

CALL TO ORDER Lynn Holzman introduces herself and her background before becoming NCAA vice president of women’s basketball on Feb. 1. She acknowledges the importance of working collaboratively with the National Office and recognizes the need to intentionally work together towards our vision.

Holzman reinforces the importance of the role of Conference Captain for the NCAA and WBCA as a conduit of information between the membership and our offices. She assures captains that we will identify priorities and move forward together as stewards of our game.

Jennifer Rizzotti identified three priorities when she began her term as president: 1. Establish a fund to coaches who have fallen on hard financial times. 2. Address the business of basketball in our educational programming. 3. Enhance the public awareness of our awards program. P a g e 4 | 8

WBCA BENEVOLENCE FUND At the WBCA Board of Directors meeting on Thursday, March 29, members voted in favor of establishing the WBCA Benevolence Fund that will enable us to dedicate a portion of our reserves to assist member coaches in need.

WBCA COACHES’ CLASSROOM: REGIONAL WHITEBOARD There are plans to expand the WBCA Coaches’ Classroom: Regional Whiteboard series. Upcoming locations include:

Atlanta, Georgia – Tuesday, May 15 Emory University

Spokane, Washington – Saturday, May 19 Gonzaga University

Boston, Massachusetts – Wednesday, May 23 Brandeis University

New York – Thursday, June 7 St. John's University

Dallas, Texas – Wednesday, Aug. 8 University of Texas-Arlington

Wichita, Kansas – October 2018 Wichita State University

Additionally, on March 29, our Professional Development Working Group ran a pilot program, the XCEL Head Coaches Workshop with over 20 head coaches in attendance. We are looking to expand this program in the coming years to include head coaches at all divisions.

WBCA 4 FANS This year we launched our newest WBCA 4 Fans experience which gave fans the opportunity to get up close and personal with some of our trophies. Please help us promote that the WBCA presents the most prestigious awards in women’s basketball.

Rizzotti addresses the Rice Commission Report. Recommendations will be made public on April 25 and the WBCA already has a plan in place to respond. This presents us with an opportunity to pursue some reforms that we have long needed or wanted. While the focus is on Division I, a ripple effect could impact Divisions II and III. The WBCA represents all of us so we will need everyone’s input. Division II and III captains will have calls in May to review and discuss the recommendations. Please be thinking about scenarios in which you may be affected. Division I captains will participate on a joint call with the Division I board members on May 14, please be prepared to voice the concerns of the coaches in your conference.

VANCANCIES ON WBCA BOARD OF DIRECTORS, CONFERENCE CAPTAINS AND COMMITTEES [SUPPLEMENT A] Donehew reviews the vacancies on the WBCA Board of Directors, Conference Captains and poll committees and compliments our poll voters on a job well done.

We have some important months coming up with the Rice Commission recommendations. She asks for help identifying next year’s captains so that our communication out to coaches remains smooth and timely.

2018-19 MEETING SCHEDULE [SUPPLEMENT B] Donehew notes that dates and/or times may have shifted on the upcoming call schedule in Supplement B. Next year our in-person meeting will take place in Tampa.

WBCA ETHICS POLICY Rizzotti reports that on Thursday, March 29, the Board of Directors adopted a comprehensive revision of the WBCA Code of Ethics. It is important that we hold ourselves accountable in front of our players, officials, fans and each other.

Donehew compliments the work of our Board of Directors and Governance Working Group that spent time working on the WBCA Code of Ethics.

Diane Dickman, ethics project leader, acknowledges the efforts of the board subgroup and WBCA staff for their contributions to the WBCA Code of Ethics. The revisions began by looking at the original WBCA ethics document followed by a thorough review of the ethics policies of other coaches’ associations and corporate policies. We were able to narrow down the most important elements to a value statement and four pillars. Lastly, we have issued a statement giving the Executive Committee authority to terminate the membership of, and disassociate from, any member in violation of our policy to protect the WBCA.

Chris Gobrecht, Air Force Academy, comments that we must encourage coaches to report violations within our coaching community. Gobrecht questions how we communicate that it is okay to report violations and what the steps should be.

Donehew responds that it was our goal with the WBCA Code of Ethics to get to a point where our coaches could begin to have conversations. The WBCA is not a governing body but a membership association. In the past we tried to have a committee that addressed concerns of potential violations; however, it was met with opposition because we are not a governance organization. As we move into our strategic planning period we will have to work through how we wish to operate and what our membership would ask us to do in terms of trying to hold ourselves and our members to a standard of excellence.

Question: Does the NCAA have a protocol they would like to see followed when there is a suspected infraction? P a g e 6 | 8

Minutes of the WBCA NCAA Division I, II & III Conference Captains Meeting Friday, March 30, 2018

Dickman responds that if coaches reported one another for inconsistent activity, we would be farther along than we are currently. Currently, there is a culture of not reporting one another and Dickman challenges coaches to use this new code of ethics to move the culture to one in which coaches hold each other responsible for fair play and fair competition.

Shannon Reynolds, deputy director, points to an article by Billy Reed published May 4, 2011 called “Coaches Need to Police Themselves.” All Captains should have received a copy of this article.

Donehew comments that this Code of Ethics is going to become a cornerstone for us as we take our next steps as an association.

WBCA STRATEGIC PLANNING PROCESS Donehew reports that the WBCA’s four-year strategic plan which was adopted in 2014 expires this year. We are gearing up to develop a new strategic plan which will take us to 2020 and beyond. Donehew introduces Bill Levisay, strategic consultant that the WBCA has brought in to help guide us and challenge us as we begin to think about our new strategic direction. Levisay has helped us understand how to approach this planning process and ensure success.

Levisay introduces himself first and foremost as a father of student athletes and encourages coaches to think about the impact they have on their players. Our actions and work on the strategic plan matters, we need to work on impact.

For more than 30 years, Bill Levisay has been at the forefront of leading teams, building brands and serving customers for some of America’s most iconic consumer products companies such as Coca-Cola Company and Bolthouse Farms. Levisay holds a BA from the College of Wooster and an MBA from Vanderbilt University.

Levisay tells captains that if they take one thing out of this talk it should be this: change is certain, progress is not. Finding progress in times of change is one of themes of our strategic planning as there is no stasis, things are always either up or down. Levisay introduces four pillars as the foundation for our strategic planning: 1. The gravity of success. 2. The nervous itch. 3. Sweat the small stuff. 4. Expand the view.

THE GRAVITY OF SUCCESS Levisay tells a story of his time partnering with Blockbuster in early 2003. On May 3, 2003, Levisay travels to Dallas to solidify a contract between Blockbuster and Coca-Cola. On this same day Netflix went public and Blockbuster closed its doors eleven years later. Levisay asks us to remember that when things are great: - Be humble.

- Be attentive/critical. - Be nervous. - Be proactive.

THE NERVOUS ITCH Levisay talks about his time working on the kiosk development project for Delta in 2002 where he realizes that barriers to success may be self-imposed. Sometimes we must be careful about our fears and “when things seem unattainable…start with self-critique, you may be the problem. Let the market tell you the truth. Don’t be afraid, take action.”

SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF Levisay tells a story of his time at Disney World. He recounts to the captains noticing a Mickey Mouse logoed manhole cover and remembers thinking what incredible detail and thought Disney had put into their design.

When we think about our strategic plan we must remember that details matter. How well we execute could be the most strategic thing we do.

EXPAND THE VIEW Levisay hands out a pair of playing cards with pinholes in the center to each captain. He asks the captains to look at a picture through one of the cards; our vision is limited. He then asks the captains to look through the pinholes of both cards simultaneously; the picture suddenly becomes whole.

When we can’t see the playing field…our viewpoint is always too narrow. Take any action that can expand your view. Even a little expansion helps!

These four pillars are important in strategic planning to help us take a step back and look at things in the third person. Just because we have been great doesn’t ensure greatness. Progress must be created.

Donehew thanks Levisay and presents a strategic plan road map to elevate the WBCA and stay relevant. We hope to present our new strategic plan at the board meeting in August. Donehew challenges captains to reinforce to peers that the WBCA is in a place of strength and the board, captains and membership lead by example for our coaching family.

Rizzotti offers closing remarks and adjourns the meeting.
