Sandy DeMartino, Chair Goodwill A multi-edged sword Committee By Oren Kreigel The multi 2♦ often generates swings due to confusion about who holds which suit. My team, KASLE, lost such a swing in our Spingold match against FLEISHER, when my teammate overcalled 2♥ over 2♦, but it happened that opener also held hearts. It was now impossible for them to reach their 4-4 spade fit, and they played in the wrong slam. However, those swings can go both ways, as in this deal from an early Spingold match (spots approximate): Dlr: North ♠ Q 10 8 5 4 2 Vul: E-W ♥ Q 9 3 ♦ 6 4 ♣ K 7 ♠ — ♠ A K J 7 3 ♥ K J 5 4 ♥ A 6 ♦ A 2 ♦ Q J 9 ♣ A Q J 10 9 5 2 ♣ 8 6 3 ♠ 9 6 ♥ 10 8 7 2 ♦ K 10 8 7 5 3 ♣ 4 West North East South Korbel Sonsini 2♦ (1) 2♠ 4♥ 6♣ Pass Pass 6♥ Dbl All Pass (1) Weak two-bid in either major. North opened 2♦, multi, and Barbara Sonsini overcalled 2♠. This had a hypnotic effect on South, who bet all his chips on North’s holding hearts. He jumped 4♥ and later saved in 6♥ over ’s 6♣. Korbel doubled and led the ♣A and a club, as declarer pitched a spade. A diamond went to the 9, king and ace, and Korbel returned a diamond to Sonsini’s jack. After the ♥A and a heart to Korbel’s king, Korbel played a club. Declarer ruffed in his hand and later scored the ♥Q, but the defense had the rest: plus 2300. At the other table, East-West played 5♣ making six, sending 17 IMPs to SONSINI, more than their margin of victory. Today the discussion will center on another effective way to compete: the . Warning: I tend to preach on this subject because I see this convention abused much too often. If you look at the left side of your convention card under “special doubles,” you will see a box for “Min. Offshape T/O.” I hope you have never checked this box because what it means is that you are making takeout doubles with the wrong kinds of hands. “Offshape” means that your doubles, with no more high-card strength than an ordinary 12-point opener – do not deliver at least three-card support for whatever partner might bid. This is bad bridge. I have seen numerous players underbid their hands in response to partner’s doubles because their partners put down doubleton support for their suits again and again. To them, bidding more just means and bidding notrump shows at least 19 HCP. You have the perfect hand for a double: going down more. To become a successful partnership, both opening-bid values and four-card support for the On the rare occasion when I call attention to players must be confident that partner actually unbid suits. If you double at your first chance and this practice, the culprit usually says, “But I had holds what his bids say he does. To do otherwise is partner bids hearts, you are in trouble. 14 points!” Others say that if partner bids their losing bridge. You can also use the double as a lead-directing doubleton or singleton (yes, it happens), they will Okay, enough of the soap box. I know some of device. Celebrating three days of fun The closing ceremony of the 10th Youth NABC was for recognition of a new set of champions, but it was also a celebration of another meeting of high- energy young people who love the game of bridge and the chance to get together with friends they’ve made at other YNABCs. Before the prize-giving got under way, ACBL President Bob Heller thanked the organizers – namely Stephanie Threlkeld and Shaneka Cunningham from ACBL Headquarters — for helping set an attendance record of more than 240 Winners of the Double Dummy National Youth Swiss Teams: Rory Xiao, Brent Xiao, Michael Hu and ACBL President Bob Heller Arthur Zhou. participants (the final count is pending). The previous record – 233 players – was set in Washington DC last summer. He also singled out the 16-member contingent from Bermuda, jokingly saying that when the 2018 Youth NABC rolls around in Atlanta, “we expect you to be there whether you drive or swim.” Heller also paid tribute to , who organized the first Youth NABC in 2008 in the Atlanta suburb of Norcross. After the closing ceremony, Tucker said, “I hope everyone who was here comes to Atlanta.” Threlkeld was equally pleased with the turnout and the smooth operation of the tournament. “I can’t stress enough how incredible the volunteers were,” she said. Threlkeld had special thanks for the YNABC volunteer coordinators, Carol Bongard and Michael Yang, and the four tournament directors who managed the sometimes-rambunctious players. “The directors,” she said, “did an amazing job.” A big part of the ceremony was the handing out of trophies to the main-event winners. This year’s winner is Jacob Schireson of Stanford CA. He was chosen for consoling a young player who was upset about having a problem during play. Ray Lee, founder of Master Point Press, told the group, “It’s not about winning and losing. It’s about challenging yourself to play one of the three or four hardest games ever created and having fun doing it. It’s important to treat people the way you want to be treated.”
