    Chapter 14 - Conner George 14-2 - Spartan Years (2018-2019) - Redshirt Junior Season Conner George With the Spartans 2018-19 season approaching and three seasons (redshirt, redshirt freshman, and redshirt sophomore) of experience under his belt, George continued to work hard to play a key role on the Spartans squad, especially with the team’s new mix of players, given the loss of five players (three to graduation plus both Miles Bridges and Jaren Jackson, Jr. to the NBA) and the addition of an incoming freshman class of five new players. However, before the start of the 2018-19 season, The Black Sheep MSU, was again up to its “fake news” reporting with breaking news that the “Phoenix Suns planned to select Conner George with the first pick in the 2018 NBA Draft.” With this now being the third time that Conner was the “butt” of a Black Sheep article, a now tough-skinned George took the ribbing in stride and tweeted the perfect comeback: “First of all I just want like to thank God…” 2018-19 Going into his third season of NCAA eligibility (redshirt junior), George was listed in his MSU bio at 6’4”, 200 pounds. We can’t tell you how thrilled we are to have such an amazing crowd for us to tell a truly wonderful story for the next chapter of the University of Louisville. What an outstanding two-week period this has been for UofL and for Cardinal athletics. Let’s think back over just a few successes from the past two weeks. Our men’s swimming and diving team finished ninth in the NCAA Championship, which is their best finish of all-time. During that championship, Marcelo Acosta earned All-America honors, so special accommodation to him. Our women’s swimming and diving team finished fifth in the country. I will note that Mallory Comerford swam the second fastest 200 freestyle in history, as she won her second NCAA championship, so truly an amazing achievement for her. But there’s more, our women’s basketball team has now earned a coveted spot in the Final Four this week in Columbus, Ohio. And just two days ago, with many of you present, I had the distinct honor to introduce our new athletics director, Vincent Tyra, who will lead our program into the future. Vince took the reins of one of America’s best athletic programs. One that is committed to top performance both on and off the court. Through his work as interim athletic director, he has shown that he will continue to push for that level of excellence.

The sport B permeates everyday life from offices to farm- lands, from coal mines to neighborhood drug stores. It is more than just a sport played in the cold winter months. It is a source of pride filled year-round with anticipation, hope and celebration. Kentuckians love their basketball, and the tradition-rich University of Louisville program has supplied its fans with one of the nation’s finest products for decades. Legendary coach Bernard “Peck” Hickman, a Basketball Hall of Fame nominee, arrived on the UofL campus in 1944 to begin a remarkable string of 46 consecutive winning seasons. For 23 seasons, Hickman laid an impressive foundation for UofL. John Dromo, an assistant coach under Hickman for 19 years, continued the Louisville program in outstanding fashion following Hickman’s retirement. For 30 years, Denny Crum followed the same path of success that Hickman and Dromo both walked, guiding the Cardinals to even higher acclaim. Now, Coach Rick Pitino energized a re-emergence in building upon the rich UofL tradition in his 16 years, guiding the Cardinals to the 2013 NCAA championship, NCAA Final Fours in 2005 and 2012 and the NCAA Elite Eight five of the past 10 sea- sons. Among the Cardinals’ past successes include national championships in the NCAA (1980,1986, 2013), NIT (1956) and the NAIB (1948).
