Invitation of Student Artists to the 26Th Summer Universiade, Shenzhen, China Invitation of Student Artists to the 26th Summer Universiade, Shenzhen, China In August, 2011 when the 26th Summer Universiade is held in Shenzhen, China, the Universiade Athlete Village will be the living home to nearly 20,000 athletes from around the world. It has already been a practice to organize cultural programs in the Village in accordance with the tenet of FISU (International University Sports Federation) and the experiences of previous Universiade games. (For information about 26th Summer Universiade and FISU, please visit www.sz2011.org, and www. fisu.net) The Executive Office of the Organizing Committee for the 26th Summer Universiade, Shenzhen now invites world-wide university student artists to provide artistic performances in the Village. 1. Applicant Qualifications 1) The applicant must be a student officially registered with a university. 2) The applicant must have rich and creative experiences in artistic performances. 2. The theme of the performances: build a platform of communication and friendship for world-wide university students. 3. The Programs mainly reflect three cultures: 1) University culture, which is to show the dynamics and vigor of university students； 2) Shenzhen’s creative culture, which is to fully reflect Shenzhen as a city of creativeness and innovation; 3) Chinese traditional culture with Shenzhen’s culture as a focus. 4. Venue and performance information 1) Flag-raising square: 3,000 square meters; open-air venue with no seats; mainly used for large-scale cultural performances; the time for performance generally controlled in 120 minutes; program forms and art styles not limited, e.g., large-scale singing and dancing performances, band performances, magic shows, acrobatics, fashion shows, cheerleading dance, martial arts, mask ball, interactive games, and other varieties of square activities. Date: night time from August 13th to August 22nd, 2011. 2) Indoor Hall: 1,000 square meters; 900 seats; mainly used for the performance and display of indoor cultural activities; the time for performance generally controlled in 90 minutes; program forms and art styles: symphonic concerts, indoor music performances, drama, avant-garde film exhibitions, lectures, and other theater activities. Date: night time from August 13th to August 22nd, 2011. 3) Cultural Interactive Area: a roofed semi-enclosed space of 1,000 square meters; program forms and art styles: interactive cultural activities, such as traditional cultural shows, fashion shows, interactive games, andoriginalcreative product market. Date: full day from August 6th to August 25th, 2011. 5. Arrangement We will provide proper sites, boarding and lodging. Student artists are required to bring their costumes, makeup, props and musical instruments, etc. The number of the people in a performance shall be less than 20 persons. As the performances are purely no-profit, we only cover the actual costs for the artists. Please detail the costs in the attached form. 6. We are now well into the new year and have made substantial progress especially towards preparations for the up coming 7th IWG World Conference On Women and Sport. As we go into the final year of IWG hosted in Botswana Gaborone, we review the progress of projects that we have over the years embarked on. Proj- ects that will form part of our legacy plan at local, regional and International level. In this edition we give an extensive update of the preparations of the conference thus far. We also look at the various projects that we have been running in the local realm and related activities. We continue our work with our various international partners and in this edition we give an update of the engagements that we have had in the past months. We celebrate great achievements including our new signatories and achievements received by some of our leaders. We continue to promote and activate for participation at the 7th IWG World Conference on Women and Sport to be held in Gaborone, Botswana from 17-20 May both in the region and internationally. We encourage and call on all to now visit our website www.iwg-gti.org to register for the conference and also appreciate the various participation options available. These including the opportunity to submit abstracts and present, to host side meetings during the conference and also to exhibit at the conference. The call for bids to host the IWG for the quadrant 2018-2022 has been extended and we continue the search for our next host.

    FISU OVERVIEW: FISU stands for Federation Internationale du Sport Universitaire (International University Sports Federation) and was founded in 1949. FISU's main responsibility is the supervision of both Summer and Winter Universiades (World University Games) as well as the World University Championships (WUC). FISU’s main governing body is the General Assembly which represents the members of the organization (153 National University Sports Federations). The Governing Body elects the Executive Committee for a period of four years, which makes all the necessary decisions for the smooth running of FISU. Ten permanent commissions advise the Executive Committee in their specialised areas, simplifying its duties. FISU is funded through subscription, organising and entry fees, television incomes, and marketing activities. The Universiades (World University Games) The Universiade is an international sporting and cultural festival which is staged every two years in a different city and which is second in importance only to the Olympic Games. The Summer Universiade consists of 12 compulsory sports (Athletics, Basketball, Fencing, Football, Gymnastics, Judo, Swimming, Diving, Water Polo, Table Tennis, Tennis, Volleyball) and up to three optional sports chosen by the host country. The record figures are 9,006 participants in Bangkok, Thailand in 2007 and 174 countries in Daegu, Korea in 2003. The Winter Universiade consists of 7 compulsory sports (Alpine skiing, Snowboarding, Nordic skiing composed of jump, cross country & combined, Curling, Ice Hockey, Short-Track Speed Skating, Figure Skating, Biathlon) and one or two optional sports also chosen by the host country. They gathered a record of 2,511 participants in Torino, Italy in 2007 and a record number of 50 countries in Innsbruck, Austria in 2005.

Most of them we honoured already in our regular Information Letters. But a deep shadow got into the EFC when we lost our President Frantisek Janda. Serguei Charikov (RUS) died on 6 th June 2015 in Moscow in a car accident, shortly before he could celebrate his 41 st birthday. A three time Olympian with two Olympic gold medals, one of the best sabre fencers in the world, started fencing at the age of 12.

In 1986 the effort became focused when the International Olympic Committee recognized squash and the World Squash Federation applied for inclusion in the 1992 Barcelona Games. Campaigns have occurred ever since, in particular for the Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio 2016, as well as for the next three upcoming Summer Games. SThe push for the Olympics, however, often overshadows squash’s inclusion in numerous other international multi-sport events, some that you might know well and others slightly more obscure. Squash will be featured this month in the quadrennial Pan Ameri- can Games in Lima, and also the Pacific Games in Samoa and the Island Games in Gibraltar. Later this year, there is the African Games in Morocco in August, and the Southeast Asian Games in Philippines and the South Asian Games in Nepal in December. Many thousands of squash players, from top PSA professionals to amateurs of all ages, play in these games, building friendships and adding to their home nation’s medal count. The exposure of squash to wider audiences is tremendous, with media attention in the host and participating nations. The facilities that get built are fabulous legacies, particularly for host cities that are slightly off the beaten squash track—for example, the courts in Cartagena that were built for the 2006 Central PHOTO: © R.
