Tv Land Stages Historic Reunion of “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” Cast on “Hot in Cleveland” As Mary Tyler Moore, Valerie Harper and Cloris Leachman Guest Star TV LAND STAGES HISTORIC REUNION OF “THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW” CAST ON “HOT IN CLEVELAND” AS MARY TYLER MOORE, VALERIE HARPER AND CLORIS LEACHMAN GUEST STAR Georgia Engel Joins The Reunion As Recurring Character Mamie Sue New York, NY – March 22, 2013 – TV Land announced today that the ladies of “Hot in Cleveland” will soon be getting some special visitors in town as Mary Tyler Moore, Valerie Harper and Cloris Leachman reunite with their co-star of “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” Betty White. In the episode, Elka (Betty White) and Mamie Sue (Georgia Engel) decide to get their bowling team back together, aptly named GLOB: the Gorgeous Ladies of Bowling. The team, which includes Elka, Mamie Sue, Diane (Moore), Peg (Leachman) and Angie (Harper), had a falling out decades ago after their championship season went to their heads. This is the first time in over 30 years that the five former castmates will be reunited on the sitcom stage. Mary Tyler Moore previously appeared on “Hot in Cleveland” as Elka’s cellmate in a season two episode. Shows like ‘Hot in Cleveland,’ which stars four women, would not be here today without ‘The Mary Tyler Moore Show’ and its incredible female-led cast,” said Larry W. Jones, President, TV Land. “Mary, Valerie, Cloris, Georgia and of course our Betty were all pioneers for women in television.” TV Land’s hit sitcom “Hot in Cleveland” returns for its summer season with a LIVE episode on Wednesday, June 19 at 10pm ET. The west coast will receive the live-to-tape version three hours later at 10pm PT. The series, which was just picked up for a fifth season, stars television favorites Valerie Bertinelli (“One Day at a Time,”), Jane Leeves (“Frasier”), Wendie Malick (“Just Shoot Me!”) and Betty White (“The Golden Girls”). -more- Page 2 – TV Land Stages Historic Reunion Of “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” Cast On “Hot in Cleveland” As Mary Tyler Moore, Valerie Harper And Cloris Leachman Guest Star “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” centered around Mary Richards (Mary Tyler Moore), an ambitious, young and single assistant producer, and her career at the fictional WJM-TV News. With her best friend Rhoda Morgenstern (Valerie Harper) and resident busy-body Phyllis Lindstrom (Cloris Leachman), Mary tackled the stereotypes of being an independent working woman in what was typically a “man’s world.” The show also starred Ed Asner as Mary’s tough-love boss, station producer Lou Grant, Gavin MacLeod as cynical head news writer Murray Slaughter, Ted Knight as the dim-witted anchorman Ted Baxter and Georgia Engel as Georgette Baxter, Ted’s wife. Moore’s company, MTM Enterprises, produced the series for CBS. “Hot in Cleveland” is executive produced by Emmy® Award-winner Sean Hayes (“Will and Grace”) and Todd Milliner of Hazy Mills Productions (“Grimm”) and is helmed by Emmy® Award-winning Suzanne Martin (“Frasier,” “Ellen”) who serves as executive producer, show runner and head writer. Lynda Obst also serves as executive producer, and Larry W. Jones and Keith Cox are executive producers for TV Land. “Hot in Cleveland” is currently seen around the world in over 190 countries. (August 2012) Evleen Michelle Nasir, B.A., Texas A&M University Chair of Advisory Committee: Dr. Kirsten Pullen There is a discursive formation of incapability that surrounds senior women’s sexuality. Senior women are incapable of reproduction, mastering their bodies, or arousing sexual desire in themselves or others. The senior actresses’ I explore in the case studies below insert their performances of self and their everyday lives into the large and complicated discourse of sex, producing a counter-narrative to sexually inactive senior women. Their performances actively embody their sexuality outside the frame of a character. This thesis examines how senior actresses’ performances of sexuality extend a discourse of sexuality imposed on older woman by mass media. These women are the public face of senior women’s sexual agency.

Mary, Roseanne, and Carrie: Television and Fictional Feminism By Rachael Horowitz Television, as a cultural expression, is unique in that it enjoys relatively few boundaries in terms of who receives its messages. Few other art forms share television's ability to cross racial, class and cultural divisions. As an expression of social interactions and social change, social norms and social deviations, television's widespread impact on the true “general public” is unparalleled. For these reasons, the cultural power of television is undeniable. It stands as one of the few unifying experiences for Americans. John Fiske's Media Matters discusses the role of race and gender in US politics, and more specifically, how these issues are informed by the media. He writes, “Television often acts like a relay station: it rarely originates topics of public interest (though it may repress them); rather, what it does is give them high visibility, energize them, and direct or redirect their general orientation before relaying them out again into public circulation.” 1 This process occurred with the topic of feminism, and is exemplified by the most iconic females of recent television history. TV women inevitably represent a strain of diluted feminism. As with any serious subject matter packaged for mass consumption, certain shortcuts emerge that diminish and simplify the original message. In turn, what viewers do see is that much more significant. What the TV writers choose to show people undoubtedly has a significant impact on the understanding of American female identity. In Where the Girls Are , Susan Douglas emphasizes the effect popular culture has on American girls.

  • The Musical Number and the Sitcom
ECHO: a music-centered journal www.echo.ucla.edu Volume 5 Issue 1 (Spring 2003) It May Look Like a Living Room…: The Musical Number and the Sitcom By Robin Stilwell Georgetown University 1. They are images firmly established in the common television consciousness of most Americans: Lucy and Ethel stuffing chocolates in their mouths and clothing as they fall hopelessly behind at a confectionary conveyor belt, a sunburned Lucy trying to model a tweed suit, Lucy getting soused on Vitameatavegemin on live television—classic slapstick moments. But what was I Love Lucy about? It was about Lucy trying to “get in the show,” meaning her husband’s nightclub act in the first instance, and, in a pinch, anything else even remotely resembling show business. In The Dick Van Dyke Show, Rob Petrie is also in show business, and though his wife, Laura, shows no real desire to “get in the show,” Mary Tyler Moore is given ample opportunity to display her not-insignificant talent for singing and dancing—as are the other cast members—usually in the Petries’ living room. The idealized family home is transformed into, or rather revealed to be, a space of display and performance. 2. These shows, two of the most enduring situation comedies (“sitcoms”) in American television history, feature musical numbers in many episodes. The musical number in television situation comedy is a perhaps surprisingly prevalent phenomenon. In her introduction to genre studies, Jane Feuer uses the example of Indians in Westerns as the sort of surface element that might belong to a genre, even though not every example of the genre might exhibit that element: not every Western has Indians, but Indians are still paradigmatic of the genre (Feuer, “Genre Study” 139).

  • 30 Rock: Complexity, Metareferentiality and the Contemporary Quality Sitcom
30 Rock: Complexity, Metareferentiality and the Contemporary Quality Sitcom Katrin Horn When the sitcom 30 Rock first aired in 2006 on NBC, the odds were against a renewal for a second season. Not only was it pitched against another new show with the same “behind the scenes”-idea, namely the drama series Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. 30 Rock’s often absurd storylines, obscure references, quick- witted dialogues, and fast-paced punch lines furthermore did not make for easy consumption, and thus the show failed to attract a sizeable amount of viewers. While Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip did not become an instant success either, it still did comparatively well in the Nielson ratings and had the additional advantage of being a drama series produced by a household name, Aaron Sorkin1 of The West Wing (NBC, 1999-2006) fame, at a time when high-quality prime-time drama shows were dominating fan and critical debates about TV. Still, in a rather surprising programming decision NBC cancelled the drama series, renewed the comedy instead and later incorporated 30 Rock into its Thursday night line-up2 called “Comedy Night Done Right.”3 Here the show has been aired between other single-camera-comedy shows which, like 30 Rock, 1 | Aaron Sorkin has aEntwurf short cameo in “Plan B” (S5E18), in which he meets Liz Lemon as they both apply for the same writing job: Liz: Do I know you? Aaron: You know my work. Walk with me. I’m Aaron Sorkin. The West Wing, A Few Good Men, The Social Network.
