ACT Flood Information for Tuggeranong Creek FLOOD INFORMATION FOR TUGGERANONG CREEK OVERVIEW Tuggeranong Creek is one of eight main water catchments in the ACT. Catchments are areas, usually bounded by hills, where the rain drains into the soil and streams and feeds into a river, creek or drainage line. In Canberra’s past, many natural waterways were converted into the familiar concrete storm drain channels as new areas of the city were developed. The Tuggeranong Creek catchment is the most southern of Canberra’s catchments, extending from the Monaro Highway, south-east of Theodore, to the Lake Tuggeranong outlet at Athllon Drive. The catchment covers approximately 69 square kilometres and spans approximately 5 kilometres north–south and 13 kilometres east–west. The catchment is highly urbanised (currently 72%), with some forested areas on the eastern fringes. Residential development began in the early 1970s. Ongoing development, including infill and redevelopment, continues. This information sheet outlines information about past and potential flooding for the Tuggeranong Creek Catchment and what is being done to mitigate the risk of flooding. The risk of flooding in Canberra is low. T G I A H O This is critical during storms that may R A N O lead to flooding. The ACT Government M E R I V CHIFLEY O N D Y N A S L has re-assessed predicted flood paths U L W O O D and flood levels for catchments in the D R I V E ACT using flood studies based on current industry standards. D R V E KAMBAH A R I K D E N F O L O L R H T D A Flood maps have been developed for each catchment and reviewed by D R I V E WANNIASSA independent experts for accuracy. The maps highlight flow paths, flood LAKE TUGGERANONG ACT depth and the potential hazard posed by floodwaters arising from Canberra’s channels, creeks and rivers. This mapping is complemented by this information FADDEN NSW E sheet and a list of questions and answers. The updated maps show the areas V I R D E R I N D A L E which could be affected by flooding from waterways in Canberra during a major OXLEY flood event, known as a 1% Annual Exceedance Probability (AEP) flood. This GREENWAY means that in any given year there is a 1% chance of this type of flood occurring. TUGGERANONG CREEK CATCHMENT FLOOD HISTORY RICHARDSON The Tuggeranong Creek catchment is not prone to frequent and extensive flooding. It has experienced minor flooding, including in 2014, caused by heavy rainfall centred around Mount Taylor.

It provides a systematic process of identifying, recognising, quantifying, and reporting information about water and how it has been used. In Australia, there are many types of water accounts produced by a variety of business and government organisations, from catchment management regions to river basins, states, territories and at the national level. As competition for water resources increases so too does the need to fully and consistently account for how water is shared between the economy, people and the environment. In Australia, two Federal government agencies – the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) and the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) – produce annual national water accounts of different types, for differing but complementary purposes. This project utilises the System of Environmental Economic Accounting (SEEA) and Australian Water Accounting Standard 1 (AWAS 1) frameworks to integrate these water accounts, which were individually compiled under the two different frameworks. It provides an excellent example of a National Statistical Office (NSO) working with another government organisation to produce a valuable set of integrated environmental-economic accounts. This paper outlines four types of integrated water accounts for the Canberra region produced as a result of this ABS/BoM collaboration, including water condition, water assets, physical and monetary supply and use accounts, as well as highlighting the benefits of combining two sets of water accounts constructed under two different frameworks.

Gardens Green Army Teams 7 May The Aboriginal Green Army team began their training on the 20th March and Farrer Ridge ParkCare Martine has been working with them on lots of great projects already. The team consists of 9 participants aged 17–24, most of who are Aboriginal people. 19 April The project will have a focus on restoring the cultural sites in the region as Red Hill ParkCare well as improving areas of national ecological significance.

There are no native cyprinids in Australia. A number of cyprinids have been widely introduced to other parts of the world with four species in four genera which have been introduced to Australia. There are two species found in the ACT and surrounding area, Carp and Goldfish. Common Name: Goldfish Scientific Name: Carassius auratus Linnaeus 1758 Other Common Names: Common Carp, Crucian Carp, Prussian Carp, Other Scientific Names: None Usual wild colour. Photo: N. Armstrong Biology and Habitat Goldfish are usually associated with warm, slow-flowing lowland rivers or lakes. They are often found in association with aquatic vegetation. Goldfish spawn during summer with fish maturing at 100–150 mm length. Eggs are laid amongst aquatic plants and hatch in about one week. The diet includes small crustaceans, aquatic insect larvae, plant material and detritus. Goldfish in the Canberra region are often heavily infected with the parasitic copepod Lernaea sp. A consignment of Goldfish from Japan to Victoria is believed to be responsible for introducing to Australia the disease ‘Goldfish ulcer’, which also affects salmonid species such as trout. On the Monaro, Aboriginal occupation appears to have been of a temporary nature with more permanent occupation occurring around the better food, shelter and water resources of the Murrumbidgee and Snowy River valleys. The use of fire was probably less important in this region as the openness of the Monaro can be explained by soil and climate conditions. With the arrival of the Europeans, following the reports of the explorers, who were usually led by Aboriginal guides, grazing became the main form of land use. The region proved to be uncompetitive for cropping, however, the arrival of the pastoralists, and the speed of their movement across the open forested, grassy landscape closely reflected the rise and fall of the world wool markets and colonial climatic conditions of the 1820s-1850s. Wire fencing (1870- 1890) and pasture improvements came later in the Monaro than in other regions due to isolation and the availability, here, of more drought resistant native grassland (Dovers 1994: 119-140).

    3.2 About Our Catchment DEFINING.THE.SOUTHERN.ACT.CATCHMENT.AREA. A catchment area is generally defined through the physical geography of an area of land generally bounded by natural features that all drain to a common point such as a river or into a specific body of water. In human geography however, a catchment area is defined as the area that services or attracts the surrounding population, for example a local nature reserve has a geographic area from which the community is able to benefit from the natural resources through physical, social or mental wellbeing. This area is not limited to the reserve itself but also the surrounding neighbourhoods that may benefit from linkages with the reserve. Woden Valley (January 2000) For the purposes of the CMS the southern ACT catchment area has been redefined to enable community participation in the management of this part of the Upper Murrumbidgee River Catchment. Our catchment boundaries are based upon the sub- catchments outlined in the ACT Government’s water resources strategy, Think Water Act Water – a strategy for sustainable water resource management, and includes the original catchments outlined in the Woden-Western, Tuggeranong-Tharwa and South-West ACT sub- catchment plans. Map 1 outlines the southern ACT catchment area and its 14 sub-catchments. It is important to note that in several areas the SACTCG has redefined the watershed catchments to include the social catchment.     ACT Water Report 2006-2007 SECTION 2: WATER QUALITY CONDITION Water Quality Monitoring Program Environment and Recreation manages a monitoring program for the Australian Capital Territory’s water resources that includes the collection of water quality, stream flow and biological data. The monitoring program is based on regular sampling of lakes and rivers. Such information is used to determine whether waters in the ACT are of appropriate quality and if the management strategies used to achieve or maintain such water quality are adequate. The information is not intended to identify specific pollution incidents but rather provide information about changes to water quality over time. Water quality data is collected by other government agencies, research institutions and authorised dischargers such as ACTEW (Lower Molonglo Water Quality Control Centre, Water Supply Reservoirs) and the Queanbeyan City Council (Queanbeyan Sewage Treatment Plant). Although the EPA may use such data for assessing compliance with licence conditions and the Environment Protection Regulations 1997, the data collected by those organisations is not reported in this document. Sampling Sites Sites are located so as to be representative of stream and lake conditions in the ACT (Figure 7). It is not possible to monitor all sites and all parameters of interest; consequently those considered most representative of environmental conditions are selected with the intention of generalising to similar areas. Lakes The major urban lakes (with the exception of Lake Burley Griffin — a Commonwealth responsibility) are sampled eight months of the year during August, October to March, and May. The ACT Government also monitors Burrinjuck Reservoir as activities in the ACT could potentially impact on this reservoir.
