Louth County Council Establishment of Groundwater Source Protection Zones Ardee Water Supply Scheme Curraghbeg Borehole January 2012 Revision 4 Prepared by: Gerry Baker, WYG Ireland In collaboration with: Geological Survey of Ireland And in Partnership with: Louth County Council With contributions from: Natalya Hunter Williams, GSI PROJECT DESCRIPTION Since the 1980’s, the Geological Survey of Ireland (GSI) has undertaken a considerable amount of work developing Groundwater Protection Schemes throughout the country. Groundwater Source Protection Zones are the surface and subsurface areas surrounding a groundwater source, i.e. a well, wellfield or spring, in which water and contaminants may enter groundwater and move towards the source. Knowledge of where the water is coming from is critical when trying to interpret water quality data at the groundwater source. The Source Protection Zone also provides an area in which to focus further investigation and is an area where protective measures can be introduced to maintain or improve the quality of groundwater. Louth County Council contracted the GSI to delineate source protection zones for nine groundwater public water supply sources in Co. Louth. The sources comprised Ardee, Cooley (Carlingford and Ardtully Beg), Collon, Termonfeckin, Omeath (Lislea Cross and Esmore Bridge), Drybridge and Killineer. This report documents the delineation of the Ardee source protection zones. A suite of maps and digital GIS layers accompany this report and the reports and maps are hosted on the GSI websites (www.gsi.ie). Louth Dear Sir With reference to the above, and further to your invitation to the public to make submissions in respect of the Draft County Development Plan 2021 – 2027 for County Louth, please note that we have been appointed by Mr Peter Collier to make this submission on his behalf. The following submission relates to lands located to the Southern outskirts of the village of Termonfeckin and its suggested proposal to rezone the site for Residential development. Situated within a 15 min walk of the Village centre and stradled on the existing boundary development line the site has excellent road frontage along the R167 and enormous potential to provide vital land zoning provisions to improve and enhance the Village and surrounding environments. With the Site Ideally placed to direct access of existing infrastructure and services a part zoning is proposed is recommended to facilitate development such as one off housing or Cul de Sac development. Residential Housing – Low Density There is a definite concern for the residential aspect in Termonfeckin in that the Variety is singular to the Termonfeckin road end of the village. At present there is one housing development selling houses in Termonfeckin which leads to non variety and no competition. -

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT 5.1 Introduction and Context This chapter sets out the Councils policies and proposals, which are aimed at promoting and enabling economic development and tourism within the plan area. This chapter gives effect to the Strategic Objective for Economic Development. SO1 Assist in the development of Dundalk's Gateway status as a Regional Employment Growth Centre & Regional Shopping Destination. 5.1.1 National and Regional Context It is a priority of the National Development Plan 2000-2006 to promote sustainable growth and employment. The National Development Plan identifies key determinants of sustained economic performance, both nationally and regionally, and these include: • Ease of access to foreign and domestic markets. • A modern telecommunications network. • Back-up research and technology infrastructure which is accessible to enterprises in all sectors. • A well developed educational system. • A highly qualified and skilled workforce. • High quality physical infrastructure, including inter-urban transport and energy transmission systems. • An adequate supply of housing. • A good overall quality of life and; • A high quality and sustainable environment. The areas that are best endowed with these characteristics are generally the larger urban centres, which have a strategic location relative to their surrounding territory. These areas possess good social and economic infrastructure and support services, and have the potential to open up their zones of influence to further development. The cities and towns with this capability are envisaged in the National Development Plan as developmental “gateways”, able to drive growth throughout their zones of influence and Colin Buchanan and Partners 43 Dundalk and Environs Development Plan generate a dynamic of development that, which inclusively, recognises and exploits the relationship between city, town, village and rural area. -

It was wonderfully quiet and provides a pleasant existence for its inhabitants. A lot of plans and work throughout the villages was evident – well done. THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT There are a great number of historic buildings in the village and these are displayed well. St. Marys Church and graveyard are well kept. The mature planting around the Crowing Cock and the School really hold their own in a year when the damp weather has not helped the flowering annuals. The entrance to the Castle and the historic area around the Church looked well. Heaveys in the main street displayed some nice sign writing. J Byrnes has a fine traditional shopfront – it is a pity that many of these are being lost around the country. Foleys displays wonderful thatch and makes a nice stopping off point for both visitors and villagers alike. Can any use be found for the old grain store as it is a fine building and should not be allowed to fall into disrepair? Consideration should be given to the replacement of some of the plastic signage over some of the shops when the time comes to replace them. -

Observe wildlife from a distance and be aware of sensitive locations such as bird nest sites, bird roosts, seals on land and wintering wildfowl and wader concentrations. 8. Biosecurity: sailors must help stop the spread of invasive species threatening our waterways and coasts! Wash and thoroughly dry boats, trailers and all other kit after a trip. Desiccation is effective against most invasive species, countering their serious environmental and economic impacts. WILDLIFE Carlingford Lough is frequented by otters and seals. In 2016, a bow head whale was spotted off the mouth of the lough and basking shark and dolphin have been reported. Boat fishing for Tope (a shark) and other species is popular in the area. Waders and wildfowl (often breeding in the arctic) winter here, feeding on mudflats as the tide recedes. -

Read Full License Page 2/12 Abstract Combining data from multiple acoustic telemetry studies has revealed that west coast England Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) smolts use a northward migration pathway through the Irish Sea to reach their feeding grounds. 100 Atlantic salmon smolts were tagged in May 2020 in the River Derwent, northwest England as part of an Environment Agency/Natural England funded project. Three tagged smolts were detected on marine acoustic receivers distributed across two separate arrays from different projects in the Irish Sea. One sh had migrated approximately 262km in 10 days from the river mouth at Workington Harbour, Cumbria to the northernmost receiver array operated by the SeaMonitor project; this is the longest tracked marine migration of an Atlantic salmon smolt migrating from United Kingdom. -
