This large and exceptionally stylish barn conversion, which effortlessly combines modern design and beautiful period features, occupies a wonderfully picturesque location in the glorious Buckinghamshire countryside. “We believe that the barn itself is well over two hundred years old, but back in 2000 it was extended and then converted into a music school,” says the owner. “We came across it seven years ago and at that time there was planning permission in place to turn it into a dwelling, so we were well aware that if we took it on it was definitely going to be a project. However, it’s such a stunning building and the location really couldn’t be more idyllic, so we could immediately see that it had the potential to be transformed into a really outstanding family home, and that’s exactly what we’ve done.”

“The house is deceptively large and so it’s not until you get inside that you can fully appreciate the sheer scale of the property. We’ve gone with a very open-plan layout in the main living areas and we have these amazing vaulted ceilings, which really enhance that feeling of space. In terms of the interior design, we wanted to retain and enhance all of the wonderful architectural features of this lovely old building, but at the same time we wanted it to be very much a contemporary home, so we’ve used a pale, neutral colour palette throughout, which enhances all of the beautiful exposed timbers and beams, and we’ve installed a gorgeous modern kitchen and modern bathrooms… all the things needed to make day-to-day life really comfortable. Overall, I’d say we’ve struck the ideal balance between old and new.”

“A huge feature of the property is the garden and its surroundings, and throughout the house we have lots of large windows and French doors that create a fabulous connection between inside and out,” continues the owner. “We have a beautiful walled garden to one side of the house and a vast area to the front that has the look and feel of parkland, and from there we’re afforded the most beautiful views of the surrounding countryside. It’s peaceful and private and totally idyllic.”

“When it’s cold and miserable outside there’s nowhere I’d rather be than our gorgeous sitting room,” says the owner. “It’s a vast space with a vaulted ceiling, lots of exposed beams and timbers, and it also has a large mezzanine area that I use as a work space. The room is absolutely huge, but when the wood burner is roaring away it has a wonderfully cosy atmosphere.”

“I love the fact that within the house and garden you get this amazing feeling of seclusion and yet we’re by no means isolated,” says the owner. “We can walk into the village, both Thame and Oxford are no more than a fifteen- minute drive away and we can hop on a train at nearby Haddenham and Thame Parkway and be in central London in well under an hour and a half.”
