UPCOMING SCHEDULE TIME (TV / Radio) Mon, Jan. 20 vs. DETROIT 1 p.m. (Altitude / 92.5) ALL-STAR BREAK / BYE WEEK

ON THE CALL TV: Conor McGahey, Peter McNab, Lauren Jbara / Radio: Marc Moser

LAST GAME — Jan. 18 (St. Louis 3 at Colorado 5) After Tyson Jost tied the game midway through the second period, Cale Makar and Andre Burakovsky scored 22 seconds apart later in the frame to give the Avalanche a 5-3 victory over the Blues at Pepsi Center. Nathan MacKinnon and Gabriel Landeskog had the other goals for Colorado, and Philipp Grubauer made 21 saves. • Makar’s goal was his 11th of the year, breaking the single-season franchise record for a rookie defenseman set by John-Michael Liles in 2003-04. • The Avs improved to 3-0 in day games, outscoring the opposition 16-6. • MacKinnon reached the 70-point mark in his 48th game for the second straight year. • Burakovsky recorded his 100th career assist.

TODAY'S GAME The Avalanche wraps up its five-game homestand with a Martin Luther King Jr. Day matinee against the Detroit Red Wings at Pepsi Center. Today is the second of two straight afternoon contests for the Avs, who beat the Blues 5-3 on Saturday. The Avs are 2-0-2 so far on this five-game homestand, which is tied for the longest stay of the season (Feb. 11-19). The Avalanche will have the All-Star Break and Bye Week starting tomorrow, as the club will be off nine full days before resuming practice on Jan. 30. The Avs, who go on a five-game road trip after the break, will not have another home game for three weeks (Feb. 11 vs. Ottawa). Colorado's five-game home point streak matches a season best (4-0-1, Nov. 27 to Dec. 13).

AVS ON MLK DAY The Avs are hosting a game on Martin Luther King Jr. Day for the third straight season, as they defeated the 3-1 in 2017-18 and fell to the Predators 4-1 last year. Today marks the seventh time that the Avalanche will host a game on MLK Day, with the club going 4-1-1 in its previous six. Overall, this is the 13th time that Colorado will play on MLK Day (7-4-1 in the previous 12).

WEEKDAY MATINEES This is the third straight year that Colorado hosts a weekday matinee (all on MLK Day). Prior to that, only one other time did the Avalanche host a weekday 1 p.m. puck drop, Feb. 18, 2013, when the Avs beat the Nashville Predators 6-5 on Presidents Day.

DAYDREAM BELIEVER Following Saturday's 5-3 victory over the Blues, the Avs are now 3-0 in afternoon games this year, outscoring the opposition 16-6. The Avalanche won 6-1 in Las Vegas on Oct. 25, beat the Blackhawks 5-2 in Chicago on Nov. 29 and won 5-3 on Saturday. Today is the second of four afternoon contests at Pepsi Center this season. Colorado is 10-3-1 in home afternoon games since the start of 2017-18.

AVS & RED WINGS Today is the first of two meetings. The Avs won both matchups last year, sweeping the season series for the second straight year.

SEASON SERIES Jan. 20 vs. DET Mar. 2 @ DET

CONNECTIONS / NOTES Calvin Pickard was drafted by Colorado (49th overall) in 2010 and spent his first three NHL seasons with the Avalanche (2014-17) ... Patrik Nemeth (2017-18 to 2018-19) and Jonathan Bernier (2017-18) were both members of the Avs ... Ian Cole is from Ann Arbor and J.T. Compher played at the University of Michigan ... Nathan MacKinnon has 13 points (7g/6a) in 12 games and Mikko Rantanen has seven points (1g/6a) in six contests against Detroit.

EAST SIDE STORY Colorado is 11-4-3 against Eastern Conference opponents.

LIGHTING THE LAMP The Avs are tied for second in goals-per-game (3.60) and tied for third in goals (173). Colorado has scored a league-high 57 goals in the first period and its 67 second-period tallies trail only Florida (68).

FIRST THINGS FIRST Colorado leads all teams with 57 first-period goals. The Avs have scored five first-period goals in the last three games and eight in the last five contests. Colorado has scored in the opening 5:00 of a game on 16 occasions this season (17 goals total).

ONE MONTH AT A TIME Today is Colorado's final game in January, with the club going 4-2-2 so far. The Avs, who were 8-2-2 in October, 8-6-0 in November and 7-5-2 in December, will start a season with four straight months above .500 for the first time since 2003-04.

ALL-STAR CAPTAIN Nathan MacKinnon will serve as the Central Division’s captain for the 2020 NHL All-Star Game this weekend in St. Louis, the second straight year he's been voted captain. MacKinnon is the first Avalanche player to be named All-Star captain twice (Joe Sakic wore the 'C' once) and the first Avalanche player to be selected to four consecutive All-Star Games since Peter Forsberg was chosen for six straight from 1996-2001. Nathan is tied for third in league scoring with 70 points (28g/42a) in 48 games, which doubles the next closest Avalanche player (Cale Makar 35). MacKinnon also ranks among the league leaders in shots (2nd, 221), points-per-game (3rd, 1.46), goals (t-4th, 28), assists (t-6th, 42) and power-play tallies (t-7th, 9).

70 MACK Nathan MacKinnon on Saturday became the third NHL player to reach the 70-point mark, doing so in his 48th game for the second straight year. The only Avalanche player to reach 70 faster was Mikko Rantanen last year.

47 Mikko Rantanen 2018-19 48 Nathan MacKinnon 2019-20 48 Nathan MacKinnon 2018-19 49 Joe Sakic 2000-01

CHASING 30-30-30 Nathan MacKinnon sits two goals shy of reaching the 30-goal mark for the third straight season (39 in 2017-18, 41 in 2018-19). He would join Joe Sakic (2003-04 to 2006-07) as the only Colorado players since the Avalanche relocated to Denver to post three consecutive 30-goal campaigns.

YOU HAD TO BE A BIG SHOT Nathan MacKinnon ranks second in the NHL with 221 shots. He has at least one shot in 199 consecutive games and needs one today to join Joe Sakic as the only players in franchise history to have a streak of 200+ games with a shot. Sakic's streak spanned 227 contests from Nov. 17, 1995 to Jan. 12, 1999. MacKinnon's streak is either the longest active run or second-longest depending how you classify the injured Dougie Hamilton (294 straight). MacKinnon paced the NHL with a franchise-record 365 shots last year and earlier this season tied the single-game club record with 12 on Nov. 1 vs. Dallas.

SHORT-SIGHTED Matt Calvert is tied for the NHL lead with three shorthanded goals, while J.T. Compher is tied for first with three SH assists. As a team, Colorado has scored seven shorthanded markers, tied for fourth in the NHL.

MILESTONE WATCH • Matt Calvert needs one point for 200

ALL HAIL CALE Cale Makar scored his 11th goal of the year on Saturday, breaking the single-season franchise record for a rookie defenseman set by John-Michael Liles in 2003-04. Makar is tied with Victor Olofsson for the rookie scoring lead with 35 points, two shy of equaling the franchise record for a rookie defender set by Quebec's Bruce Bell in 1984-85. Makar leads all rookies with four game-winning goals, which is a club rookie record for a defenseman.

NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTION Since January 1st, Samuel Girard is tied with John Carlson for the most points by an NHL defenseman with 10 (0g/10a). He recorded three straight multi-point games, Dec. 31–Jan. 4, which included a career-high, four-point night on Jan. 2 vs. St. Louis. Samuel became only the third Avalanche defenseman (fourth time) to record three straight multi-point games, joining John-Michael Liles (Dec. 23-29, 2008 and Oct. 10-14, 2005) and Sandis Ozolinsh (Feb. 16-23, 1996).

THAT'S A PLUS Ryan Graves is the NHL's plus/minus leader with a +32 rating, the highest ever by an Avalanche player through 48 team games (previous was +29 by Joe Sakic in 2000-01). Graves has been a "plus player" in 25 of his 47 contests and has been a "minus" only seven times. He had a streak of eight consecutive games with a "plus" from Nov. 27–Dec. 11, the longest run by an Avalanche player since Peter Forsberg from Jan. 2-15, 2004 (also eight).

CAREER YEARS • Samuel Girard has already surpassed his career high in assists and is one point shy of matching his best (27 in 2018-19). • Pierre-Edouard Bellemare has set career highs in points (18) and assists (11). His seven goals have tied a personal best (2015-16 with Philadelphia). • Joonas Donskoi has tied his career high with 14 goals (2018-19 and 2017-18 with San Jose). • Ian Cole is one goal, three assists and four points shy of tying his personal bests. • Matt Calvert needs one goal (13 in 2014-15 with Columbus) and two points (26 in 2018-19) to match his career highs.

IN WITH THE NEW Offseason additions Nazem Kadri (15), Joonas Donskoi (14) and Andre Burakovsky (14) all rank among the Avalanche's top-five goal scorers this season, accounting for 43 (or 25%) of the club's goals. All three forwards rank among the Avalanche's top-six point producers as well, notching 88 points (43g/45a) in 48 games. Other offseason signings Pierre-Edouard Bellemare (7) and Valeri Nichushkin (8) have combined for 15 tallies, meaning these five players have 58 of the 173 goals (34%).

FRANKIE FIVE ANGELS Pavel Francouz ranks eighth in the NHL in Sv% (.926) and ninth in GAA (2.41).

WORKING OVERTIME Nathan MacKinnon has two OT winners this season and eight in his career, one behind Milan Hejduk for the most in franchise history. The single-season club record is three, a mark already tied by MacKinnon in 2017-18.

THIS DAY IN AVS HISTORY Jan. 20, 2003 – Patrick Roy became the first goaltender in NHL history to appear in 1,000 games, as the Avalanche and Stars played to a 1-1 tie at Pepsi Center.
