Biloxi Shuckers 2021 Game Notes Biloxi Shuckers 2021 Game Notes Double-A Affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers MGM Park, 105 Caillavet St, Biloxi, MS 39530 Contact - Garrett Greene Cell: (817) 937-9572 Home Games can be heard on WGCM 1240-AM, FM 100.9 FM Streak: L4 Last 5: 1-4 Last 10: 1-6 Home Record: 0-1 Road Record: 1-5 Biloxi Shuckers (1-6) vs. Mississippi Braves (3-4) LHP Leo Crawford (0-1, 9.00) vs. LHP Hayden Deal (0-1, 1.80) Thursday, May 13 ● 6:35 P.M. ● MGM Park ● Biloxi, MS ● Game #8 / Home Game #2 Last Time Out: Biloxi was able to jump ahead 2-1 on a Brice Turang RBI single in the 3rd, but a two-run top of the fifth and a solo homer by Justin Dean were enough for the M-Braves to top the Shuckers 6-3 on Wednesday... Tristen Lutz homered and Bobby Wahl struck out three in his one inning of work on Major League rehab with the Shuckers. At the Plate: Hot Start: OF Tristen Lutz has gotten out to a fast start with the Shuckers, reaching base safely in all seven games and hitting safely in six of seven... Lutz went 2-for-4 on Wednesday with a double, a home run, an RBI and two runs scored... In his last three games, Lutz is 5-for-11 with 2 2B, 2 HR, 2 RBI, 4 R, BB, K. Good Eye: Biloxi drew a franchise-record 16 walks against the Barons on May 6... They did fall short of the Southern League record for walks in a game (19 - Huntsville vs. Columbus 4/20/89)... The Shuckers 13 walks in the 6th inning is more than the record for base on balls in a single inning in both the American League (11 - Yankees in ‘49) and National League (9 - Cincinnati in ‘57)... Every batter drew at least one walk in the 6th as Biloxi sent 18 men to the plate against four differnt Barons pitchers... The lone hit of the inning was a 2 RBI single by Brice Turang. Welcome To Double-A: Six of the Shuckers 13 Opening Day position players bypassed High-A on their way to Biloxi (Cabrera, Castillo, Devanney, Fry, Garcia, Lujano)... The Shuckers added three position players from Triple-A Nashville on Tuesday as 2019 California League Co-MVP INF Luis Castro, OF Chad Spanberger and longtime Southern League veteran Jamie Westbrook were assigned to Biloxi... In a trio of corresponding moves, Jesus Lujano & Gabriel Garcia were assigned to High-A Wisconsin and Daniel Castillo was sent to the Complex League. On the Mound: The Twist of Fate: In his Double-A debut, RHP Matt Hardy struck out the first seven batters that he faced. Overall, Hardy went 3.1 scoreless innings, surrendering just a walk in his first outing with the Shuckers. Wonder Wahl: Bobby Wahl became the first Major League rehab assignement for the Shuckers since August 7, 2019 when Brent Suter pitched 2.0 scoreless innings in Tennessee... The Ole Miss product tossed one inning and struck out three, allowing a solo home run to Justin Dean. Long Ball Blues: In their first seven games, the Shuckers pitching staff surrendered 17 home runs, tied for the fifth most in all of Minor League Baseball.. Starters have allowed 5 home runs through 24.0 innings while the bullpen has surrendered 12 homers in 30.0 innings. Two-Way Player: After hitting in the Shuckers lineup for each of the first three games, Lucas Erceg made his professional pitching debut on Friday night, tossing a scoreless inning with two walks, a pickoff and a strikeout... It was the first appearance on the mound for Erceg since he pitched at Menlo College in 2016... The Shuckers have had a two-way player on the roster in each of the last four season (Nick Ramirez: 1B/LHP - 2017 & 2018, Clayton Andrews: LHP/OF - 2019) What’s Shuckin: New League, Old Friends: With the reorganization of Minor League Baseball, the Shuckers now play in the South Division of the Double-A South... they are joined in the South Division by the Mississippi Braves (Atlanta), Pensacola Blue Wahoos (Miami) and Montgomery Biscuits (Tampa Bay)... The North Division is comprised of the Birmingham Barons (Chicago -AL), the Chattanooga Lookouts (Cincinnati), the Tennessee Smokies (Chicago - NL) and the new addition to the league, the Rocket City Trash Pandas (Los Angeles - AL)... Gone from the league are the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (now Triple-A Miami) and Jackson Generals. #ShuckersInTheShow: Ten players from the 2019 Biloxi Shuckers have made their Major League debut: Anthony Bender (MIA), Alec Bettinger (Brewers), Mario Feliciano (Brewers), Trent Grisham (Brewers), Angel Perdomo (Brewers), Cody Ponce (Pirates), Drew Rasmussen (Brewers), Corey Ray (Brewers), Justin Topa (Brewers), and Devin Williams (Brewers)... • Indians' Catching Combo Is Club's Safety Net by Jack Magruder Special to MLB.Com PHOENIX -- a Few Things Define the Cleveland Catching Combo
Indians' catching combo is club's safety net By Jack Magruder Special to MLB.com PHOENIX -- A few things define the Cleveland catching combo. They both want to play every day. They both could. Neither makes a big deal out of it. Yan Gomes and Roberto Perez could make a strong case as the best 1-2 punch in the American League, and it starts with their work on the defensive side, the less glamorous but more valuable part of the job, considering the demands each game presents. A catcher might bat four times a game; he will call roughly 150 pitches and face around 15 runners looking to connive their way into an extra base. Gomes put it nicely into perspective. "Some hitters are home run hitters," he said. "We are throw-out guys." Yes. Yes, they are. Not that offense is an afterthought, of course. Gomes and Perez combined to drive in 94 runs last season, which was third among AL catching groups. Their 22 homers, 14 by Gomes, was exactly the league average. The other side of the ball is where they separate themselves. Cleveland catchers threw out 43 percent of attempted basestealers last season, the best percentage in the Majors, the second season in three in which the Indians finished in the top two and the fourth consecutive year in the top five. The Major League average was 26 percent. There is little wonder why Cleveland calls among the fewest pitchouts in the league. "We like throwing out guys," Gomes said. "We like controlling our staff.

  • Clips for 7-12-10
MEDIA CLIPS –May 19, 2018 Desmond, Blackmon homer as Rox stifle SF Thomas Harding / MLB.com | May 18, 2018 SAN FRANCISCO -- On Friday night, Rockies first baseman Ian Desmond turned the clock back 12 days -- most of which were dark, offensively. Desmond launched a three-run homer in the fourth inning and an RBI double in the sixth, and Kyle Freeland went 6 2/3 innings for his fifth straight quality start, as the Rockies beat the Giants, 6-1, at AT&T Park. On May 6, Desmond homered twice during a 4-2 road victory over the Mets. From then until his first at-bat Friday -- a fielder's-choice grounder that led to Trevor Story being thrown out at the plate in the second -- Desmond was 3-for-34 with 13 strikeouts and two walks. With no true first-base alternative, all the booing and all the social posts couldn't excise him from manager Bud Black's lineup. But with two swings, Desmond helped the Rockies improve to 3-1 on this road trip. "It's something that we've seen, but not consistently from at-bat to at-bat, game to game," Black said. "But when he got hold of the fastball, his contact point was out front, resulted in a homer. The double, same thing." It was more than a guy shaking off a slump for a night. The Rockies pulled to a half-game behind the slumping D-backs, who fell for the eighth time in the last nine games Friday (3-1 to the Mets), but nonetheless lead a National League West that is waiting for a team to surge.
