Tips: Most indoor areas in Hong Kong including the meeting rooms and dining areas are air- conditioned. You may like to bring along a light jacket or a shawl for the possibly strong AC. Don’t forget to visit www.hko.gov.hk for weather forecast before leaving home!

Visa Requirement Visitors from most countries can enter Hong Kong without a visa for periods of seven to 180 days, depending on nationality. Check with the Hong Kong Immigration Department for details about visa requirements.

Hong Kong International Airport For the information of the Hong Kong International Airport (HKG), please visit www.hongkongairport.com.

Airport Shuttle Bus Service The MTR’s high-speed Airport Express is the fastest way to get between the city and the airport. The 35.3km journey between the Airport and the city takes as little as 24 minutes. Passengers can take a free shuttle bus from to major hotel on including Hotel Jen. See more details on the Airport Express and the shuttle bus services here.

Passengers taking the Airport Express can enjoy the free In-town Check-in service in Hong Kong and Kowloon Stations to check in between 90 minutes and one full day ahead of their scheduled flight departure time. Please click here or contact your respective airlines for further information.

Hotel Jen also provides complimentary shuttle bus service to the Hong Kong Station.

Public Transportation Hong Kong is so compact that getting around is quick and easy. An efficient public transport system – network of urban trains (Mass Transit Railway or MTR) and numerous routes of trams, buses, ferries and also taxi – enable visitors to explore Hong Kong conveniently and safely on their own. Tourist MTR 1-Day Pass is tailored for tourist travel around Hong Kong. Tourists can have any one day of unlimited rides on the MTR (except the Airport Express Line) within the ticket validity period.

Octopus Card You won’t be in Hong Kong long by the time you notice locals bleeping their way through MTR turnstiles and supermarket checkout counters with Octopus cards. This is an extremely versatile stored-value electronic card that can be used for most public transport, as well as purchases in convenience stores, fast food shops, supermarkets, cake shops, vending machines and more. Various types of Octopus cards are available. Simply place the Octopus card over a reader and the payment amount will be automatically

The best types for visitors include Sold Tourist Octopus card at HK$39 (US$5) and On-loan Octopus card with a refundable deposit of HK$50 (US$6.4). The Sold Tourist Octopus card has an iconic Hong Kong design, making it an ideal souvenir that can be used again when you come back. A refund handling fee will be charged if you return the On-loan Octopus less than 90 days from the date of issue.

Currency The Hong Kong dollar (HK$) is the unit of currency used in Hong Kong. One US Dollar is about HK$7.80. Most foreign currencies and traveller’s cheques can be changed at banks, hotels and moneychangers. All major credit cards are widely accepted in Hong Kong and can be used to obtain cash advances at banks and automatic teller machines (ATMs). ATMs can be found almost everywhere including on HKU campus, and provide 24-hour cash withdrawal (HK$). Tips: Travelex Foreign Currency and Money Exchange at the Baggage Reclaim Hall of HK International Airport opens from 0515 to 2400 daily. Cash machines are also available 24 hours at the Baggage Reclaim Hall, Arrival Hall and Departure Hall.

Electricity The standard voltage in Hong Kong is 220 volts AC/50 cycles. The plug/socket system in Hong Kong is a 3- rectangular-pin type.

Most of the mobile telephone systems used around the globe operate in Hong Kong. Free WIFI is available in the hotel and on HKU Campus. Tips: To stay connected, you can get a prepaid SIM Card. Just plug in and go. SIM cards by different telecom service providers are easily available in convenience stores, e.g. 7-Eleven or Circle K, and come in different duration and data plan.

Sales Tax Hong Kong does not have Sales Tax/GST/VAT.

Tipping Most major restaurants add a 10% service charge, but you are still expected to leave a small tip of between 5-10%, depending on how well you feel you have been treated. Taxi drivers tend to round up the fare to the nearest dollar and if not, will appreciate a little extra. Bellboys, porters and washroom attendants will also expect a small tip.

Water Tap water is safe but it is recommended to boil water before drinking. HKU’s Policy on disposable plastic bottles aims to eliminate the sale and distribution of all disposable plastic water bottles of less than one litre on campus. You are encouraged to bring your own reusable water bottle for refilling filtered water during the meeting and from water fountains around campus.

Attractions nearby the hotel and on Hong Kong Island

Where to eat in ? – Get ready to explore the cafés and restaurants of Shek Tong Tsui (石塘咀). This vibrant district between Kennedy Town and Sai Ying Pun has lots of character, and that mix of old and new that we just love about Hong Kong.

Zhen Restaurant Contemporary Dim Sum (臻) – Just steps away from Hotel Jen, this small restaurant serves contemporary dim sum, with both traditional Chinese fare and modern Western approaches. Dishes are modelled after cute animals like birds, pigs, pandas and dogs.

Address: Shop C Nam Cheong Building, 48-52 Hill Road, Western District (西環西營盤山道 48 號南昌大廈地下 C 舖) Tel: 2811 2568 Open: 11am-9pm

Tram Ride - Take a step back in time and explore the bustling north corridor of Hong Kong Island aboard one of the city’s historic trams (ding ding). These double-decker streetcars which travels at 40 to 50 km/h have been travelling through Hong Kong’s busiest thoroughfares since 1904 and continue to be an affordable, inexpensive and fun way to get around. Trams run daily from early morning until midnight.

Tips: No matter how far you travel, each tram ride costs a flat fare of $2.30 (US$0.3) and exact change is required if you are paying by cash. All trams accept Octopus cards.

The Peak – If there is only one thing you can do in Hong Kong, go to the Victoria Peak. The highest point on Hong Kong Island, this has been the city’s most exclusive neighborhood since colonial times — back then it was the cooler air that attracted the rich and famous; in the post air-conditioning era, the views of one of the world’s most spectacular cityscapes keep them coming.

Tips: Riding the Peak Tram is a visual experience in its own right — Hong Kong Island’s skyscrapers slide past your window at what appear to be impossible angles as you make the ascent to The Peak on the city’s historic, funicular railway. The Peak Tram runs from 0700 to 2400 and departs every 10 to 15 minutes.
