Pastoral Perspective

Dear Parishioners,

Welcome to the holiest of weeks! Holy Week, the final week of Lent, begins on Palm Sunday. Holy Week is a time when we gather to remember and participate in the Passion of Jesus Christ. The Passion was the final period of Christ’s life in Jerusalem. It spans from when He arrived in Bethany Friday night before what we now call “Palm Sunday” where He stayed probably with Martha, Mary, and Lazarus and walked to Jerusalem to when He was crucified on Thursday/Friday.

Whether you participate in person at the Church or via live stream, use these liturgies to remember how faithful our Lord is to us, even in the midst of change. "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten son!" (John 3:6) We are excited to welcome new members at St. Vincent Blessings to you this Holy Week! de Paul parish through Baptism! Circle of Dreams – April 15th! 2020-2021 School Year Updates Join us for St. Augustine Indian Mission’s Circle of Not unlike many local schools, “adapt and be flexible” Dreams event. For the 2nd year, the pandemic has best describes St. Augustine’s school year. Last forced this event to be virtual: split between a Live summer, with help from the Winnebago Tribe and local Stream event, and a multi-day on-line auction: health department, St. Augustine took several precautions and measures with the goal of providing Virtual Program Live Stream and Live Auction: When: Thursday, April 15th, 7pm in-person, on-site classes. Ending the 2019-2020 school year fully-virtually lowered standardized test scores more than normal at the start of this school year. However, St. Augustine’s in-person, on-site approach has been beneficial as the students are making positive growth, with recent test scores closer to their norm. A current challenge is a regional teacher shortage causing staffing issues for area schools, including St. Augustine. They certainly have many loyal teachers, who teach for the love of the children (some of whom commute up to 40-50 minutes); but others will naturally leave to obtain advanced teaching degrees or for personal reasons. Further, St. Augustine’s salaries and benefits are less than surrounding schools, further complicating recruitment and retention. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers as they staff for the next school year.

He once said, “Christ’s love has wounded my heart.” This love prompted him to great acts of charity.

To help continue these works of mercy, in 1859 he established the Gray Brothers, a religious community composed of men who formerly belonged to the Secular Franciscan Order. Three years later, he founded the Gray Sisters of St. Elizabeth for the same purpose.

Toward the beginning of his final, nine-year illness, Ludovico wrote a spiritual testament which described faith as “light in the darkness, help in sickness, blessing in tribulations, paradise in the crucifixion, and life amid death.” The local work for his began within five months of Ludovico’s death. He was beatified in 1993 and canonized in 2014.
