Last Fling to Host Jason Aldean Labor Day Weekend NAPERVILLE, Ill Last Fling to Host Jason Aldean Labor Day Weekend NAPERVILLE, Ill. – April 29, 2009 – The Naperville Jaycees are proud to announce Jason Aldean will perform at 8p.m. on the Rotary Hill Main Stage at the Last Fling, Sat., Sept. 5 this Labor Day weekend. “Jason Aldean is on the cusp of becoming a country A-lister,” said Matt Liethen, Last Fling co-executive director, “we’re looking forward to his hard-rocking stage style and good music.” Just this week, the multi-platinum country rocker snagged the No. one spot with his smash hit “She’s Country” from his new album “Wide Open”, marking Aldean’s second career No. one hit and his sixth Top 10. “Wide Open” is currently number two on the Billboard Top Country Albums Chart. "Man, it's hard work to get up to that No. one spot, and I don't take it for granted," said Aldean. "I've got a small, but mighty team...from the guys at the label to my crew out on the road. Thanks to them and all my friends at country radio, we'll be celebrating extra hard this week." Aldean has had quite the career to celebrate, which started in 2005 with his debut Platinum-selling album that generated three successive Top 10 hits: “Hicktown”, “Why” and “Amarillo Sky”. “We’re adding some diversity to the musical genre for the Last Fling this year and Aldean is just right for country lovers,” said Kevin Piket, Last Fling co- executive director, “We’re looking forward to a great show.” Starting the show at 6p.m., Colt Ford will serve up some newly styled country music. Ford’s musical mixture embodies the seemingly unusual pairing of Southern country and hip-hop musical influences he heard growing up. Starting Friday afternoon and running through Monday evening, there are special events, carnival rides and attractions, a children's playland, food and beverage vendors, a business expo and concerts on two stages each evening.     Deana Carter DEANA CARTER, the daughter of famed studio guitarist and producer Fred Carter, Jr., grew up surrounded by musical greats, including Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, Waylon Jennings, and Simon & Garfunkel. She developed her songwriting skills at writer’s nights throughout Nashville, but her real break came when one of her demo tapes fell into the hands of Willie Nelson, who remembered Deana as a child. Impressed with how she’d grown as a songwriter, Nelson asked Deana to perform along with John Mellencamp, Kris Kristofferson, and Neil Young, as the only female solo artist to appear at Farm Aid VII in 1994. Her 1996 debut album Did I Shave My Legs for This? quickly climbed to the top of both the country and pop charts, quickly achieving multi-platinum status. "Strawberry Wine,” the first single from the album, was awarded CMA's 1997 Single of the Year. Seven albums and a decade later, Deana is still writing and producing for both the pop/rock and country markets when not on the road touring. Her superstar success continues to be evident. Her chart topper “You & Tequila,” co-written with Matraca Berg and recorded by Kenny Chesney, was nominated in 2011 as CMA’s “Song of the Year” and received two Grammy nods. Neal, Thesis Advisor Dr. Allen Anderson, Reader Dr. Andrea Bohlman, Reader © 2016 Mason Taylor Allen ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Mason Taylor Allen: The Musical Features of 2015’s Top-Ranked Country Songs Under the direction of Dr. Jocelyn R. Neal The 2015 top-ten country songs analyzed in this study are characterized by the various formats of their song form, harmonies, and lyrics. This thesis presents a comprehensive study of the structure and narratives in sixty-seven songs that summarizes the distinctive features within those domains of contemporary commercial country music. A detailed description of the norm along with identifiable trends emerges. The song form that features most prominently in this repertory includes a verse-chorus-bridge form with three iterations of the chorus, an intro and outro section, and instrumental sections immediately following each chorus. The top-ten country songs have varying degrees of departure from this typical model. Primary features of the harmonies of these top songs include the frequent use of a double-tonic complex, the absence of a 5-1 authentic cadence, the same chord progression throughout the verse, chorus, and bridge, and the use of only two chords throughout the song. Lyrical analyses show that 2015 songs are continuing the traditional themes about romantic attraction, love, heartache, good times and partying, home, family, nostalgia, religion, and inspiration, within the context of small-town country life that this genre has used for years.
