Organisation

Management of the Charity is by the Board of Trustees which is made up of elected members and four non- voting members, the Administrator, the Treasurer, the Diocesan Chaplain and the Editor of the Diocesan Newsletter. The organisation is represented in all twelve Deaneries and there are 45 branches across the Diocese. There are two Members’ Meetings per year and the Annual Lady Day Service in . The trustees meet a minimum of four times per year as required by the constitution, and produce two copies of Lesley Templeman Administrator and Stephen The Angel, the diocesan magazine newsletter. Moore Treasurer Financial Statement

A new Honorary Treasurer took over at the beginning of the year. The accounting system was migrated on to a new package produced by Data Developments especially for Churches and Church organisations. In the middle of the year we had to find and move to a new office as the office at St. Michael’s in Sheerwater was required for the Bishops Mission. We found the current office which had been recently refurbished. This incurred some, one off costs with in this year. This year we held a family day and also donated £1,500.00 to a Refuge to help refurbish their children’s play equipment. A full breakdown of the accounts is shown at the end of this report.

President’s Report

My term of office as Diocesan President began on 1st January 2016. I joined The Mothers’ Union in 2003, was Branch Leader for four years, became Deanery Co-ordinator in 2013 and joined the Trustee Board in October 2013. I have met members of the MU in Malawi and Barbados as well as around Britain and Ireland giving me a wide and international perspective. In early 2016 the Trustee Board drew up the Draft Diocesan Plan in which were

Antonia Wilson identified areas of concern and included plans to provide improvement, specifically: President of Trustees a) To update, modernise and improve the website and the register of members. b) To create two-way communication with incumbents in the diocese, supported by our Archdeacons and Rural Deans. c) Offer an improved prayerful resource and family information, based in Deanery areas – as highlighted for inclusion in the Bishop’s Diocesan Plan. d) To work closely with Mary Sumner House (Central Office of The Mothers’ Union) as a revised Constitution went into the Consultation Phase.

During 2016 the activities, fundraising and distribution of funds flourished within the Guildford Diocese. There are 1300 members. Branches have been active. Membership has fallen slightly though natural causes but one new branch has opened. Some branches have become groups meeting less often but continuing in prayer and action. Most members are involved in activities, whether through MU or not. The Badge of Membership always encourages recipients of MU support. Increasingly, new (usually younger) members prefer to receive news online and join groups for specific activities or fund raising events.

4

The , the Rt. Revd. , is a member and the new Bishop of , the Rt. Revd. Jo Wells, was enrolled as a member at the Members’ Meeting in November 2016.

Guildford Cathedral continues to support the MU at all times, providing meeting rooms when required and hosting the Annual Lady Day Eucharist Service. The monthly Pilgrimage of Prayer services are held in the Lady Chapel. The MU has supported the Cathedral during the current period of refurbishment when building works have made life challenging for the cathedral staff and all who visit.

As recorded above, the Funds and Activities are fully active. An increasing number of volunteers help with Prison projects. The Reverend Jo Wells refuges are supported most generously by the membership in at the Autumn Members meeting supplying a wide range of goods for the women and children. Feedback and acknowledgement for all this work is received regularly and passed onto the members through the weekly update.

The Parenting programme has been particularly successful with groups continuing to meet following their training. A new branch has been formed from one of these groups.

Mothers Union Enterprises, (MUe), the commercial arm through which cards, calendars, diaries and a large selection of gifts and goods are sold, has been very well supported and appreciated throughout the diocese – earning Guildford the accolade of ...... (certificate of greatness!!??). Sheila Sutherland, the trustee who has responsibility for this, should be credited and thanked for her continued hard work and results with MUe.

Throughout the year members of the Guildford Mothers’ Union have served the charity with huge amounts of time and compassion, always given of their time freely as volunteers. With over 1200 members the time given is impossible to quantify.

In keeping with the Aim and Objects of the charity members support Reverend Jo Wells Bishop of Dorking and families in their local areas and across the diocese as well and Antonia on the Bouncy Slide at the looking after many vulnerable and needy members of their Families Day communities.

Reports from Co-ordinators

Parenting

Our facilitators continue to work with great commitment and enthusiasm. Most parenting groups consist of up to 12 parents who have the opportunity through discussion to reflect on their parenting skills and discuss ways to enhance their family life. Kim Darby has facilitated two parenting groups this year and MU members have been very supportive in providing a crèche for the children, and refreshments with a warm welcome each week. A 'one off' GRANDPARENTING session also took place in November 2016 which was well attended. A new venture was also discussed in 2016 to set up a parenting group in Send prison which will be a challenging and exciting new venture. Refreshments after one parenting session

AFIA Guildford had a surprisingly quiet year in 2016. In the first six months, no requests for a holiday had been received. The MU took action, by following up on some previous tentative suggestions. When a few requests for application forms were received, it was unfortunately too late in the season to arrange a holiday during the school vacation calendar. We also supplied an outing for ladies from the refuges One AFIA holiday has been carried over into 2017, from an application that was first received in 2016

Refuges

We have supported several mums who have had babies whilst in refuge this year providing them with baby hampers with an array of items needed in those first few weeks and nearly new baby equipment. For those arriving with families with nothing but the clothes they have on we have given new clothes, bedding, - of which the mums have been so surprised that anyone would want to help them! Members have donated toiletries, tinned, dried and other food items, nappies, washing up liquid and cleaning requisites. These items are distributed to the 4 refuges that we support.

At Christmas, we gave the refuges Christmas hampers full of goodies and presents for the children and mums, and Easter eggs at Easter. Our major giving was to one of the refuges- a donation to help buy a replacement climbing frame.

Prisons Our members continue to support Highdown, Send and Coldingley Prisions. At Highdown and Coldingley we entertain children during visits making it an enjoyable time for them and giving parents some privacy. Members go into the prisons several times a week on a rota basis. Mothers Union funds and other donors have supplied the toys whish we share with other play workers. We have three sessions a month at Send Prison, also on a rota basis providing craft and games evenings for prisoners over 50. On 2 other mornings, we provide card making opportunities. This is popular as it allows prisoners to keep in touch with their families. There is also a parenting course at the prison supported by the Mothers Union.

Faith This year we held a spring and autumn retreat organised by Mrs. Mary Trevill held at Ladywell both were well attended. Jenny Vickers continues to run our Prayer chain within the Diocese 6

but as many Branches’ hold prayer meetings, members use it mainly for Emergency prayers. As our Prayer Day of Refreshment and renewal, at St Andrews Cobham, in April was so successful we will be running it again and to look at having half day ones in different parts of the Diocese. We have started the process of producing guideline’s for the Pilgrimage of prayer and hope to complete it soon.

Advocacy Mothers Union nationally has raised its profile through advocacy and lobbying in Parliament and consequently they have been asked to attend conference’s, events. This year they were asked to attend the United Nations commission on the Status on Women. We were asked for our input into this. There was a large response to the petition asking the government to drop charges for using the Child Maintenance Service for those affected by domestic abuse. A large number of members signed that petition. A service was held on the first day of the global “16 days of activism for Gender based violence” at Mary Sumner house. We then joined a march to 10 Downing street and handed in the petition. Through this the government is reviewing the policy changes. There have been papers to comment on topics such as sex education in schools. In November at The Houses of Parliament there was a relaunch of the “Labelled for Life” booklet designed to help family’s deal with social media and the internet. This is a highly thought of booklet and is now being used by schools as well as families.

Enterprises We have had a very good year with sales of Mothers Union Enterprises goods, the turnover grant that we received from Mary Sumner house for the Guildford Diocese was £625.40 ranking us 19th in the table of 65. This supports the work within the Diocese while the remainder of the profit supports work Nationally and Internationally. Whether ordering from us or direct for Mary Sumner House yourself helps support Mothers Union. I have myself won the Representatives Weekly Raffle through ordering via the website. Lady Day 4TH April 2016 Bishop Andrew, who is a member of Mothers’ Union, commissioned eight trustees for a three-year term with Mothers’ Union in the during The Lady Day Service at Guildford Cathedral on 4th April, encouraging them, “to build on the last 140 years and continue to expand into new areas and face the challenges with courage”

Queen’s Patronage of over 600 charities and organisations on the occasion of her 90th birthday. 22 of us wearing Mothers’ Union polo shirts, were at first under white plastic ponchos, that protected us from the rain. When the Royal Family appeared, the sun came out and suddenly there was colour all along The Mall, as we removed our ponchos. Prince Edward took the Mothers’ Union Birthday Card for the Queen from Lynne Tembey. In the Queen’s speech, she thanked all the volunteers for their time and service to others and hoped that she would not still be The Mall Sunday 12thJune 2016 hearing Happy Birthday in December.

Family Day 9th August, Mary Sumner Day

Celebrating 140 years since Mary Sumner started the Mothers’ Union. Members, friends and families brought their picnics to Normandy Village Hall and enjoyed the day. Children and some adults played on the bouncy castle – team games – crafts – face painting – cakes and the visit from the ice cream van. The adults left with a bookmark with Mary Sumner’s prayer and children with a balloon. Families had so much fun they asked if we could do it again!! So, join us again on 9th August 2017 at Normandy Village Hall.

Reports from Branches

Epsom Deanery The Epsom Deanery 'Quiet' Family Fun Day was held at All Saints', Banstead in October, where children, parents and grandparents learnt about God's love for them. Children explored their knowledge about God and this was reinforced through play. Each child wrote a prayer on a cut out paper leaf, which was then attached to the Prayer Tree. The 'Wave of Prayer' was explained, and all joined in saying The Lord's Prayer, the children reading the words from the illustrated Cross. Lunch was followed by more games. (see picture on front cover)
