3 From the Editor I am forced to keep it very short this month. I was half way through doing this month’s Pump when I slipped on some stone steps and fell very heavily onto my back. To cut a very long story short, everything is taking ten times longer than it should and there’s a lot of pain involved! I hope I can rely on your understanding and sympathy with regard to any errors and omissions this month! There’s an insert this month about the Rugby World Cup at Millennium House. Get together with your friends and neighbours to watch your team. Let’s get that 2012 spirit going again! All the best. Joe P.S. Pensilva Carnival was brilliant this year. If you were there then you won’t need me to tell you!

The Latest from Your Parish Councillor - Martin Corney Peter Haines has been welcomed back onto the Parish Council after many years of absence. His previous experience as a Parish Councillor makes him another invaluable addition to our ranks. We still have vacancies on the Parish Council, so if you think you can contribute your time and enthusiasm, please contact the Parish Clerk, Leesa Childs. Congratulations and thanks to the Millennium House Events Group who organised Pensilva Carnival Week this year. This shows how the local community can run some things just as well as the parish council, if not better. I think this shows that Pensilva Community Association CIO running Millennium House is a positive way forwards. As the new Universal Credit system is rolled out to replace a number of benefits it is possible that some of us will have financial difficulties if the change doesn't happen smoothly. If you know of anyone in temporary difficulties, don't forget that the food bank where I volunteer in is there to help, also the one in . I heard recently that our rural buses can be flagged down on a 'hail and ride' basis. I think this means that if the bus driver considers that it is safe to stop, we can wave them down at places other than the standard bus stops. Don’t forget the parish website st-ive-parishcouncil.gov.uk with council meeting agendas and minutes; also downloadable copies of the Parish Pump. For those of you who do Facebook, our St Ive Parish Council page is still being updated with parish news.4 Phone me, email me on [email protected] or "martin corney blog st ive" in search engines will find my blogs for you to comment on this article and other gems. From Cllr Steph McWilliam – September 2015

This is a quieter time for meetings in as so many people are taking leave but it is a good opportunity to catch up with reading and consultations. There has been plenty going on locally and it is lovely to be able to meet so many people whilst out and about at carnivals, fun days and other activities arranged by the local communities. I mentioned before about a scheme to encourage waste reduction. About six town or parish councils will be selected to test it and invitations to be one of the test areas are going out shortly. Cemeteries – It came as a surprise to me to discover that cemetery provision is not a statutory requirement. Some parts of Cornwall are extremely short of space and are running out already. It isn’t that easy to find a suitable plot of land because of requirements related to the water table, mine shafts and other concerns. We do, however, have to maintain closed cemeteries (CoE) but don’t have to provide new. There has been some talk of regional cemeteries but in discussion so far, councillors have all felt that this would be very unpopular, as people don’t want to have to travel too far to visit and to tend the graves of their loved ones. There are cases of strangles in horses on the moor. This isn’t a notifiable disease but it is serious. It only affects horses but please be aware it can be spread by any species. Please also alert someone if you see a horse or pony that is clearly unwell to try and prevent any unnecessary suffering. I was delighted to hear that from September this year, the new Moor Commons Council will be electing members to start work in April 2016. This should make it easier to take action affecting the moor, its animals and environment. It has taken a lot of hard work over several years to achieve this, so congratulations to all concerned. Please continue to keep in touch and let me know if you need help with council matters. Please also let me know good news stories as well. Thank you.

Pensilva Community Association CIO would like to apologise for a typographical error in its Prospectus circulated last month. On page 6 “What’s the Plan?” in the paragraph headed “Increased Income”, the budget is for a 5% per annum increase over the first five years, not a 5% increase over 5 years as stated. 5 Thanks to Geoff Firth for bringing the error to our attention. Pensilva Carnival - Thanks. On behalf of the Millennium House Events Group I would like to say thank you to all the organisations who put on activities throughout Carnival Week and to the people who attended them, from the car treasure hunt, skittles, bingos, fun run, donkey derby, sports events and children’s art and crafts. A packed programme! Then on Carnival Day, thanks to so many for all the fantastic raffle prizes, Russ Hall of Liskeard Cycles, Steve Hoskin, Terry McCarthy, Trethorne Golf Club, Tapenades, Rosecraddoc Holiday Village, Tesco Callington, Morrison’s Liskeard, Trago Mills, Zoo, the Monkey Sanctuary, Segway Siblyback, Kate Vaughnley, Barbara Bennett (sorry if I missed anyone) and to WBM builders who sponsored the rosettes this year. I’m sure you’ll all agree how gorgeous our Carnival Queen and attendants looked on the lovely horse and carriage leading the parade. I hope you all had a carriage ride! As usual the Liskeard Town Band, Tavistock Twirlers and this year Tony Stentiford (Callington town crier) really gave it the carnival atmosphere, along with all the amazing fancy dress entrants. Thank you. The dog show/agility proved popular, with several entries. The Car Boot I thought worked really well in the Car Park. Great to see the lovely classic cars and fire engine; it would be lovely to build on this next year – somebody asked to bring classic bikes - great! Congratulations to little Oscar who won the baby show and thank you to Ruth’s sisters who had the difficult job of judging the many wonderful entries. I wouldn’t have liked the job as they were all winners in my eyes. Thank you to all the stall holders, pre-school for the BBQ, Steve for the Archery, Julieanne for the ice cream van, whom I’m sure we all appreciated in the glorious weather. What a beautiful day! Thanks to the Millennium House staff and to our group of volunteers who all together made it a memorable week and day. But all of these events would be nothing without the support of the public - you - thank you all! Karen

8 Pensilva W.I August meeting. Instead of a meeting this month we had a visit to Jamaica Inn. It was a lovely sunny evening not in keeping with what would be imagined, and certainly no sign of swirling mist. First we saw a short film about the history of the Inn. It was built in the 1750s and extended in 1778 to include stables and a coach house. It was thought that the inn takes its name from the smugglers who smuggled rum from Jamaica, but it was actually named after the Trelawney family who where an important local family with connections with Jamaica. The inn contains the “Museum of Smuggling, and the main focus is on its fascinating collection of smuggling artefacts which depicts the history of Jamaica Inn and its role in this trade. The Inn became notorious after the writer Daphne du Maurier stayed there and wrote the book Jamaica Inn. There is also a display of photos and a writing desk and the typewriter she used. The evening finished with a nice meal in the restaurant and birthday posies and cards were presented to Cherry Woodhouse and our President Frances Tucker. A lovely evening enjoyed by all. Just a few diary dates to remember. The most important date is our Horticultural th Show on Saturday 12 September, at 2.15pm.
