PRESS RELEASE MOTORSPORT Boulogne-Billancourt – 30 May 2021 Records tumble at the Gran premio d’italia oakley • Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) wins in Mugello • Quartararo sets a new all-time circuit lap record of 1’45.187 in Q2 • Johann Zarco (Pramac Racing) breaks the race lap record with a time of 1’46.810 • Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) breaks the circuit MotoGP™ top speed record, hitting 362.4 km/h in FP3 • A new Mugello race time record of 41’16.344 It was a record-breaking race weekend for Michelin at the Gran Premio d’Italia Oakley in Mugello. Fabio Quartararo led virtually from start to finish, taking the chequered flag ahead of Miguel Oliveira (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) in second place, and Joan Mir (Team Suzuki Ecstar) in third. In Q2, Fabio Quartararo powered his Medium front and Soft rear MICHELIN Power Slick-shod Yamaha YZR-M1 to a new all-time circuit lap record of 1’45.187, smashing the previous record which was set by Marc Marquez in 2019. In FP3, Brad Binder broke the MotoGP circuit top speed record on-board his KTM RC16 when he went through the speed trap on the straight at 362.4 km/h – close to the all-time MotoGP top speed record, which is held by Johann Zarco. Moving into the race, and to make the hat-trick, Johann Zarco broke the race lap record with a time of 1’46.810 while dicing for the lead with Quartararo on lap two, beating the long- standing previous record which was set by Marquez back in 2013. And finally, the icing on the Michelin record breaking cake was a new Mugello race time record of 41’16.344 – around 16 seconds faster than the previous record – which clearly demonstrates the consistent grip and durability of the MICHELIN Power Slick tyres. Commenting after the race weekend, Piero Taramasso, Michelin Two-Wheel Motorsport Manager, said: “The first thing that I must say is that we are all very saddened by the tragic news of the passing of Moto3 rider Jason Dupasquier, and our thoughts and condolences go out to his family, close friends and members of his team. “In terms of the tyres, we were very happy with their performance throughout the whole weekend. The riders tested all the options in our Mugello allocation at some time during the various practice sessions during the weekend, and the feedback was very positive. MOTORSPORT “The proof of the pudding is in the eating, and in the results, so the fact that the all-time lap record, the race lap record, the circuit top speed record and the race time record were all broken this weekend shows that the allocation worked exactly as we expected. I’m also pleased to see that all teams were on the pace during the weekend – with four different constructors in the top five places in the race – which highlights the versatility, in addition to the grip, feel and consistency that our 2021 range of tyres offers.” Michelin, the leading mobility company, is dedicated to enhancing its clients’ mobility, sustainably; designing and distributing the most suitable tires, services and solutions for its clients’ needs; providing digital services, maps and guides to help enrich trips and travels and make them unique experiences; and developing high-technology materials that serve a variety of industries.
