Jack is thought to hark back to Medieval times as a common derivative of the name John. The nickname has also been seen as Jackie among men (Jackie Coogan , Jackie Cooper , and Jackie Gleason were all formally named John). This "Jackie" diminutive of the nickname Jack is thought by some to have hailed from the earlier "Jackin" (born of the appellation Jankin).[3][4] Alternatively, it may be derived from the name Jacques , the French form of the name James or Jacob .[3] There is also a theory that it is Celtic in origin, meaning "healthy, strong, full of vital energy" (compare the Welsh word iach, "health"), from a putative Ancient British Yakkios.[5] Whatever its origin, both the name and the word "jack" were long used as a term to refer to any man, especially of the common classes.[2][6]

In recent years (most notably since 2003), the nickname Jack (for the more formal John and, to a lesser extent, for Jacob) has become increasingly used as the actual formal name (i.e., baptismal name rather than a nickname) for boys in England, Ireland, Northern Ireland, the United States, and Wales. Jack was included on lists of the most frequently used male baby names in the UK for 2003–2007.[7][8][9] The high status of Jack as a formal male given name (versus its traditional John-derivative) is a recent phenomenon, although the formal name from which it derives – John – has held the title, along with William, of most frequent male name throughout the 1880s and first half of the 1900s.[10] In 1994, "Jack" was the most popular name in London but does not appear among the top-10 most popular in the preceding 970 years.[10][not in citation given] A survey in December 2008 showed that Jack was the most popular name in the UK for the 14th year running, since it took over from Thomas in 1994.

In 2014, Jack was again the most popular name for baby boys in Ireland.[11]

In 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2013, Jack was the most common name given to boys in Australia.[12]

According to the United States Census of 1990 , "Jack" is an uncommon American name, the given name for 0.315% of the male population and 0.001% of the female population.[1][13][14] However, the frequency of use of "Jack" as a baby name has steadily increased from the 160–170 rank prior to 1991 to a rank of 35 in 2006.[15]

Jock is the Scottish form of the name John. Its similarity to the common John derivative or nickname Jack is apparent.

The appearance of "Jack" as a surname is much less frequent than its use as a male given name. Many clubs use a ranking system. Caddies will start as a trainee, and be promoted through the ranks of Intermediate, Captain, Honor, and finally Championship. Many courses start their caddies off at the B level, and after a year move them to A, and on their fourth year (if they have earned it), they will receive the title of Honor caddie. The intermediate and A golf caddie depicted in a late-18th- captain ranks can usually be obtained within the first century painting. Weekly schedule [ edit ]

Caddies are most frequently employed at clubs on weekends, when the majority of country club golf takes place. Some (but usually not as many) opportunities to caddie exist during the week, as well. Additionally, caddies are often allowed to play the course at which they caddie for free, usually on a Monday (the day that most private clubs choose to close their course for maintenance). On pro golf tours, professional caddies accompany their player to all events, which usually take place from Thursday through Sunday. Additionally, the player may hire their caddie to carry their bag for them during training sessions and practice rounds.

Pay scale [ edit ]

At most clubs, caddies are paid at the end of the round by cash, or receive a payment ticket for which they can redeem their wages in the clubhouse. Generally, the player will tip the caddie based on their performance during the round, with extra money given for exemplary work. Most American club caddies earn between $80 and $120 per bag, though newer caddies will often earn less than more experienced caddies. Caddies working during a tournament, high-stakes match, or 4-Day member-guest will often earn significantly more, upwards of $150 per round, per bag, at times. It is common for experienced caddies to carry two bags at a time. It is considered acceptable to ask a professional at the course what the average pay for a caddie is, as courses differ.

In a professional golf tour setting, a player often pays their caddie a percentage of their winnings, which can be as high as 10%. A common pay scale is 5% for making the cut, 7% for a top 10, and 10% for a win. The caddie also usually receives a salary, as the player is not guaranteed to win money at every tournament.

Opportunity: In early 2016, Target rolled out a new billion-dollar kids brand called Cat & Jack. Target Creative’s task: Bring to life a new in-house designed brand in a way that creates a lasting relationship between mom, kid and Target.

Solution: Target Creative launched a multi-channel campaign for this exclusive, “kid-designed” line of clothing. We leveraged social, video, direct mail, Target.com, experiential and influencers to turn the Cat & Jack line of kids and baby clothes into one of the largest marketing‑supported brand launches in Target’s history. To kick off the line, we created a larger-than-life playground event at Brooklyn Bridge Park featuring kid models sliding down a giant slide, while giving guests exclusive event access during the press party through a Facebook Live stream.

Results:

• The product line has exceeded sales plans to date • The brand launch at Brooklyn Bridge Park garnered twice Target’s average engagement on Facebook Live • Our Facebook Canvas ad gained 1.3 million video views, with linkshares driving traffic at launch • Paid social content earned 60.5 million impressions and 5.1 million video views • PR results for the launch alone included 150 stories and approximately 500 million impressions, with an average tone of 3.6 and an average PR recall of +52%

Target is rolling out a new children’s and babies clothes line called Cat & Jack, Bloomberg reports, noting how much the resuscitation of the retailer's former “cheap chic” cool depends on a revamp of its kids apparel and home goods lines.

Target developed Cat & Jack (which replaces its mainstay Cherokee and Circo kids labels) by consulting feedback and opinions from a range of children.

Kids’ apparel is a relatively stable $30 billion market in the U.S. that grew

1.8% in 2015. Children’s Place, Gap, Gymboree, H&M, Kohl’s, Wal-Mart, and Zara are among the major players, along with numerous boutiques. That makes the segment a battle for market share. Target is second to Wal- Mart among mass merchants in children’s apparel sales, according to market research firm NPD Group, Bloomberg says.

Dive Insight:

According to Bloomberg's in-depth look, Target CEO Brian Cornell has been working to inject more opportunities for creativity and risk-taking at the big-box retailer. Much of the work being done to revamp children’s clothing and other lines involves company veterans eager to take on the task.

The approach to differentiation in merchandising is not new for Target, which decades ago innovated the idea of bringing upscale design philosophies to mass-market goods. But the retailer let go some of its focus on that, leaving it to compete on price. Target should have known better—its cheap chic approach was born of the realization that it couldn’t take on Wal-Mart’s “always low prices” juggernaut—but economic frailty and wage stagnation perhaps made the company cautious.

Target continues to face disappointing sales, through efforts like its gender- neutral Pillowfort line for kids and improvements to stores are paying off, so it remains to be seen whether the pivot back to differentiating its merchandise will be enough. (Gender neutrality is another important differentiation for the retailer, which has responded to customer complaints about segregation of boys and girls toys and other merchandise by blurring some lines, though it has also taken some flak for that.)

The process takes more time and resources, although, as the Bloomberg piece notes, Target is playing hardball with suppliers to make its better quality, better designed goods at the same bargain prices as its previous lines.

Certainly, Target has little choice but to try, considering that price alone is not a promising playing field. “Price has emerged as a bigger-than-life issue that is enormously complicated," Columbia University retail studies professor Mark Cohen, who worked for Target’s parent company decades ago as it first shifted to designer-based differentiation, told Retail Dive. "How do you put an assortment into a 200,000-square foot plain vanilla box that is inviting, engaging and happy, and makes you want to come back?
