89Th Annual Report 2015 Hon’Ble Union Finance Minister Shri Arun Jaitley, Chairman of Governing Body Shri Ajay S 89th Annual Report 2015 Hon’ble Union Finance Minister Shri Arun Jaitley, Chairman of Governing Body Shri Ajay S. Shriram, distinguished members of the Governing Body, eminent alumni, guests, proud parents, my dear colleagues, staff & students, ladies and gentlemen. A very good morning to all of you, and A warm welcome to the SRCC 89th Annual Day function Shri Ram College of Commerce, established in 1926 by Sir Shri Ram, a philanthropist and business leader, is a premier institution of higher education in India. It has achieved immense prestige in the field of Commerce and Economics education since its inception. The college, besides academics, lays great emphasis on co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. It gives me immense pleasure and we feel elated to inform you that our students have achieved outstanding positions in academics, sports, co-curricular and extra- curricular events this year. On the 89th Annual Day of the College, it is the time to recognize and applaud the excellence of our young achievers and also share with you our aim and mission. We aim that by 2026, the centenary year of Shri Ram College of Commerce, the college is recognized not only as one of the best institution of higher education in India but also globally. Our mission is to provide technology based inclusive and integrated (a judicious mix of physical, intellectual & value) education in a global context in a safe, vibrant & hygienic environment and achieve excellence in publications and research to enrich not only national but also international community. The Chief Guest of today’s function, a very dynamic & vibrant person, Hon’ble Union Finance Minister Shri Arun Jaitley needs no introduction. Not only is he a member of the Governing Body of SRCC, he is also an illustrious alumnus and chief patron of the Alumni Association of the College. It is my pleasure & privilege and a great honour for all of us to welcome him as Chief Guest on 89th Annual Day of his own college. Sir, thank you very much for being here and making our day so memorable. Another eminent personality sharing the dais is the president of CII and the chairman of our Governing Body, Shri Ajay S. Shriram, the – great grandson of our founder Sir Shri Ram. He is a person known for his pragmatic approach and clear vision. Sir, we are honoured by your gracious presence. Both, Shri Arun Jaitley and Shri Ajay S. Shriram, have pushed forward the process of change in the college that is forward- looking and in line with the changing needs of the nation. Their strategies, commitment, enthusiasm and passion for the college have guided us in the academic and infrastructural development of the college. As a result, we have state of the art classrooms, Equal Opportunity Cell, sports complex, updated communication network, internet connectivity, etc. for all stakeholders in line with the futuristic notion of education. The strength of SRCC is the input of the system, i.e. the students. This input passes through various processes designed and implemented by the dedicated faculty members and non-teaching staff. Because of the quality of input and various systems put in place, the output of the system is bound to be excellent, which is reflected in the performance of the students. Our students have performed very well over the years and this year is no exception. My heartiest congratulations to all the winners of academics, sports, co-curricular and extra-curricular events of the current academic session. A piece of advice for winners: to become more humble, considerate and compassionate by taking your success to your heart. Take your success to you heart and not to your mind to ensure that your ego is not nurtured. And the non-winners: ‘DO NOT QUIT’. Don’t take it to your heart, but to your mind. Analyze it, rework your strategies and work harder, so that you become the winner next time. I feel that the only failure in life is not to learn from your failures. Annual Report 2014-15 1 Today, we will honor winners of various events with the medals and academic prizes. But one particular event deserves a special mention here. It is one of a kind of event that has never taken place in the history of the college. Our B.Com. (H), second year section-I student, Mrityunjay Sharma has broken the existing Limca Book of Records of 50 hours and 40 minutes of playing Keyboard by playing (Longest Piano Recital) for 52 hours from March 11, 2015 to March 13, 2015. The Alumni of any institution are their brand ambassadors. Their success in their respective fields adds immensely to their alma mater’s brand. Every year awards are given to honour the distinguished alumni of the college by following a transparent system adopted by the selection committee headed by the Hon’ble Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Arjun K. Sikri, my illustrious batchmate, an eminent alumnus of the college and the member of the Governing Body of the college. I am an alumnus of this college and therefore, really concerned about the issue of alumni – college disconnect. The need of the hour is alumni – activation in real terms. Many surface level activities, in particular fund-raising activities, have been undertaken over the past years after Dr. Girish Ahuja took over as president & Shri Arun Jaitley as the chief patron of the alumni association. But there is a need to engage alumni in a substantial way to take college forward by undertaking purposeful activities. Much more is desired in this direction for meaningful and purposeful engagement of the alumni. The contribution of Shri Arun Jaitley, Dr. Girish Ahuja and his team in making the association a vibrant one is known to the alumni of the college. But we periodically need to refresh or reinvent ourselves to stay vibrant. I believe that emotional connectedness and the sense of belongingness of alumni is lying in a dormant state and needs to be activated by engaging them more & more. It is the responsibility of the institution to take this initiative. For this, we should encourage greater participation of alumni in steering the college ahead by requesting for endowment, to hold visiting positions, helping in curriculum development & delivery, mentoring students, etc. Other desired steps are: open alumni office, issue quarterly e-newsletter, start week-end monthly alumni evenings, allow use of infra-structure at concessional rates, arrange a cricket match between GB XI and Alumni XI, nominate one GB member from alumni, open global chapters, etc. To provide holistic education, several significant initiatives were undertaken and a few are in the pipeline. Some of these are as under: • Empower the Marginalized Segments: Outreach programmes for less privileged: remedial classes, Hindi classes for North-East students, a research project on North-East culture, financial aid, all round support for piano event mentioned earlier, etc. • Environmental Initiative: Waste paper recycling in partnership with Greenobin Recycling Private Limited, UNDP Seminar on Environment, Khadi Utsav. • Cleanliness & Hygiene: Canteen, Washroom fittings etc. by renowned providers. • For SRCC’s Daughters: Self Defense Workshop, view cutters on the boundary wall of girls’ hostel, UNDP programme on women empowerment. • Social Impact Programme: – The NSS unit of the college rendered highly committed service to enrich the corporate life of the college and also make a positive change in the quality of life of the community around. 2 Shri Ram College of Commerce – To promote social entrepreneurship, Enactus empowered thousands of people through their projects and done a puppet show in Nagaland about Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan organized by the Government of India. • Physical Fitness: Basic Health Care Unit, Physiotherapy, Workshop on “Wellness for All”, International Sports Exchange Programme. • Intellectual Programmes: – Workshop on E-Resource – Role in Research & Teaching (March 16- 22, 2015). – Workshop on Case Method Teaching (November 11-22, 2014). – Seminar and oratory competition on Good Governance Day – International Conferences. – International Exchange Programmes. Some of the initiatives in the process are: – Teach in India: The catchphrase of our Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. We are in the process of taking up engagement of globally known intellectuals and international faculty for our students and faculty under “GIAN” (Global Initiative of Academic Networks), the initiative of our Hon’ble Union Minister for Human Resource Development Smt. Smriti Zubin Irani. – Startups: We have been doing extremely well as far as placements are concerned but as things are changing, the emphasis should shift from job seekers to job providers. For this, we need to establish a center for innovation, incubation and entrepreneurship. We are in the process of making it happen soon. – Research Promotion: Collaboration with best minds for strengthening research and entrepreneurship capabilities. – Seminar on Role of Banking in Global Era (April 6-7, 2015). – New Computer Laboratory. – New Girls' Hostel block. – A regular cultrural programme of North-East students. Friends, we encourage purposeful activities as mentioned above, for holistic development of students to ensure that we produce not only earners but also good human beings. To quote Aristotle “Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all”. To grow in stature as human beings, we train students to embrace life in all its fullness, which is not measured only by IQ or even EQ, but a spiritual way of life to ensure that they move towards the main purpose of life, i.e. sustainable happiness. I express my gratitude to all guests for their valued presence, thanks to the college faculty and staff for their unflinching support and extend my good wishes to students for their future endeavours. Thank you very much.

  • Millennium Development Goals
The MDGs after 2015: Some reflections on the possibilities Deepak Nayyar This background paper was prepared for the UN System Task Team on the Post-2015 UN Development Agenda. An earlier version was presented to the UN Expert Group meeting held in New York from 27- 29 February. The views expressed in this paper are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of the United Nations. April 2012 Following on the outcome of the 2010 High-level Plenary Meeting of the General Assembly on the Millennium Development Goals, the United Nations Secretary-General established the UN System Task Team in September 2011 to support UN system-wide preparations for the post-2015 UN development agenda, in consultation with all stakeholders. The Task Team is led by the Department of Economic and Social Affairs and the United Nations Development Programme and brings together senior experts from over 50 UN entities and international organizations to provide system-wide support to the post-2015 consultation process, including analytical input, expertise and outreach. 2 The MDGs after 2015: Some reflections on the possibilities The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which began life at the turn of the century, are the focus of attention among people for different reasons. Some are concerned with the past to review progress. Some concentrate on the present to consider the implications of the financial crisis and the Great Recession in the world economy. Some think about the future and how to traverse the remaining distance. The conjuncture is obviously important. It is time for an evaluation of progress with respect to the objectives set out in the MDGs.

Crafting Chaos: The lC assification of Unilateral Transfers under the Current Account at Bretton Woods and its Impact on Remittances to the Indian State of Kerala Abstract This essay aims to analyse the classification of unilateral transfers under the current account at Bretton Woods despite significant opposition from larger delegations of major Allied powers, bringing to the forefront the global liquidity of remittances in the post-War years permitted by their fully currency convertible nature. Using the example of the Indian State of Kerala, this paper charts the relevance of their sustained uninterrupted flow to their subsequent exponential growth in the last three decades, using the case study as a pivot to argue for better policy measures that maximise their multiplier effect.
