Squash – An International Sport

EUROPE 47 Länder ASIA 30 Länder

PANAMERICA 32 Länder AFRICA 21 Länder OCEANIA 13 Länder

143 National Federations

Squash was developed in the middle of the 19 th century by pupils of Harrow School, London. It derived from a sport played against a front wall called “Rackets”. The pupils found that by including side walls the game provided much more excitement and variation. Harrow School built the first squash court in 1864.

The game spread throughout the Commonwealth. , New Zealand and Pakistan became centre's of this new dynamic sport and dominated the first official competitions. The International Squash Rackets Federation (ISRF) was formed in 1967, its name being changed in1992 to the (WSF) which is now recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for the sport.

Squash is a genuinely global sport. It is played by approaching 20 million in around 150 countries, embracing all continents. It is a growth sport, having seen worldwide participation expanding substantially in the last ten years. There are now approaching 50,000 courts worldwide. Squash can also boast an integrated competitive structure which runs from club level right up to World Championships.

It is organized in 143 countries, all of whom are National Associations, recognised by their National Olympic Committees (NOC). Members have to join one of five Regional Federations creating an integral part of the WSF structure. Actively played as a hobby in more than 185 countries.

The first squash courts in Germany were built in Berlin in 1939, but the sport did not take off until the middle of the 70’s. The number of courts grew to more than 4,000, with almost two million people playing the game – the most impressive growth in the history of squash. In 150 years squash has gone from an English school pastime to become one of the most arduous sports in the world.

Paderborn in Germany is a squash metropole in itself and is pleased to welcome the some of the best female players in the world to this great event.

Women's Squash (WSA)

The Women's Squash Association (WSA) marked its 30th anniversary of its formation with celebrations held at The Allum British Open in May and the US Open later in the year.

Founded in February 1984 at the Belfast Boat Club in Ireland, the originally-named Women's Squash Players' Association (WSPA) boasted 23 members and elected New Zealander Robyn Blackwood as its Chairwoman and Australia's Rae Anderson as Secretary/Treasurer.

The first WSPA World Ranking list was topped by New Zealand's - who went on to achieve an unprecedented 105 months as the women's world number one. The Association later changed its name to the Women's International Squash Players' Association (WISPA) , before being re-launched as the Women's Squash Association (WSA) in 2012. Over the past 30 years, the Association has attracted some 5,000 players from all corners of the globe who have competed in more than 1,200 events on the international Tour.

Welcome to the first WSA World Ranking Tournament in Paderborn!

On behalf of the Paderborn Squash Club I would like to welcome all players and officials to the first ladies squash world ranking tournament to be held from 4th - 7th of June 2014 in Paderborn.

Paderborn, being in the heart of Europe certainly gives many young ladies the chance to gain valuable world ranking points without having to travel great distances. Our aim of boosting the ladies game in Europe has met with an amazing result.

This ranking tournament will bring together players from all over the world who are not currently in the top 40 in the world ranking, thus giving the promising and ambitious players tighter competition. Females from no less than thirteen countries will fight for the Paderborn Open Title. So four days of exciting world class squash are guaranteed.

After the resounding success of hosting the 23rd World Men's Squash Team Championship you have been very quick to respond to what promises to be an unforgettable event.

We hope that the participants will take the opportunity to make new friends and enjoy the generous facilities at the Ahorn-Sportpark. With a little time between the matches we also trust that you will also find the shops and sights of Paderborn very interesting too.

We are sure that we provide a basis for a great tournament and now it’s your turn to confirm this with emotional and exciting matches!

Good Luck to all!

Yours sincerely, N.Farthing

Paderborn Open 2014 - The Event

The Paderborn Open 2014 is the first women's world ranking tournament to be held in Paderborn, Germany.

Always an exciting and excellent event for the ladies it is however usually held in far off destinations.

It is of great advantage to be able to offer many young European female competitors an event with strong "local" competition, less travel, held in a beautiful City in a truly amazing sporting facility that many will never have experienced. before.

We consider ourselves to be very fortunate to have the honour to host this high caliber ladies squash event.

After the World Junior Individual and Team Event in 1990 the European Club Championships 2005 and the World Men's Team Championship 2011, this Event is going to be the next world class tournament in the Ahorn-Sportpark the home of Paderborner Squash Club.

In this event twelve world class players will take their place in the main draw.

Sixteen promising and ambitious contestants from 13 different nations will battle for the 4 remaining slots available in the main round.

The registration for both draws was completed before the closing date and the waiting list is still growing.

In the aftermath of the World Men's Team Event in August 2011 the interest for a ladies tournament has been enormous. Hopefully we will be able to field a bigger Challenger very soon.

Paderborn – The Venue The Place To Be / Fascinating Contrasts

In the heart of Germany, in glorious countryside between the northern lowlands and the mountainous central region, lies an ancient cathedral city and a modern centre of technology: two towns in one, Paderborn.

Cutting-edge technology and medieval achitecture, the future and the past live side by side in harmony here as in hardly any other German city.

Rathaus / Town Hall Paderborn

Paderborn has lived through exciting times. Everywhere you look, you will see the signs of more than 1200 years of history: a Romanesque-Gothic cathedral, a timber-framed town hall in the Weser Renaissance style, a medieval imperial palace, a baroque Jesuit church, and much, much more.

Just 4 km from the centre, surrounded by 40 hectares of parkland, lies a dreamy moated castle with beautiful baroque gardens. This is Schloss Neuhaus, former seat of Paderborn’s prince bishops and today a treat not to be missed.

Just a few hundred meters away from the squash centre is the home of the Paderborn football team " SC Paderborn 07". Schloss Neuhaus Water Castle This season they have been promoted to the German Premier League known as the 1.Bundesliga. So look out for matches against Bayern Münich, Borussia Dortmund, Schalke 04, etc.. It will prove to be a very exciting venture for the City of Paderborn.
