Djibouti bishop happy that Mogadishu cathedral ruins are helping Somalis NAIROBI, Kenya – Djibouti Bishop Giorgio Bertin, who oversees Catholics in neighboring Somalia, said he is happy that the ruins of Mogadishu’s only Catholic cathedral are housing hundreds of displaced Somalis. “In Mogadishu there are hundreds of camps for displaced people. The cathedral area is one of them,” the bishop said in an email interview. “I think that at least 300 could easily fit in, but I have no real figures.” The U.N. officially has declared a famine in parts of Somalia, including the internally displaced communities in Mogadishu, the Somali capital. More than 100,000 Somalis poured into the capital searching for food within a two-month period this summer. Somalia has had a civil war since 1991, and the famine-hit areas are plagued by a lack of security because of a weak central government and the presence of various political factions that control parts of the country. The instability and resulting violence severely limit the delivery of humanitarian assistance. Hundreds of thousands of Somalis have fled to Kenya. Bishop Bertin said the best solution would be to help the displaced people within Somalia, “but the problem is often that where they are either they are unsafe or we cannot reach them.” In 1989, Italian-born Bishop Pietro Salvatore Colombo of Mogadishu was killed at his cathedral. After the murder, the Vatican eliminated the post and now oversees Somalia through neighboring Djibouti. “The cathedral has not been used since Jan. 9, 1991, when it was ransacked” and set on fire, said Bishop Bertin. -

The Path of Somalis have been leaving their country for the last fifteen years, fleeing civil war, difficult economic conditions, drought and famine, and now constitute one of the largest diasporas in the world. Somali Refugees into Exile A Comparative Analysis of Secondary Movements Organized in the framework of collaboration between UNHCR and and Policy Responses different countries, this research focuses on the secondary movements of Somali refugees. It was carried out as a multi-sited project in the following countries: Djibouti, Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, the Netherlands, Efionayi-Mäder Denise Baglioni, Simone Moret, Joëlle South Africa, Switzerland and Yemen. The report provides a detailed insight into the movements of Somali refugees that is, their trajectories, the different stages in their migra- tion history and their underlying motivations. It also gives a compara- tive overview of different protection regimes and practices. Authors: Joëlle Moret is a social anthropologist and scientific collaborator at the SFM. Mental Health Problems and Healing among Somalis in Sweden* Johan Wedel I. Introduction Refugees are particularly at risk of mental health problems and they often have special needs that must be met if integration into the new country is to succeed.1 However, there is a lack of research that focuses on the refugees’ own perceptions and ideas about mental health.2 One of the largest refugee populations worldwide is the Somalis. It is esti- mated that more than a million have fled their country because of the civil war.3 Many Somalis in the diaspora experience anxiety, marginal- ization, and mental health problems. At the same time, few make use of biomedical health services when suffering. Moreover, there exists a certain mistrust of the biomedical health sector.4 In addition, many Somalis turn to non-Western healing practices when suffering from episodes of ill health.5 Somalis in the diaspora have depression and anxiety related to war, the loss of family members, and afflicting spirits known as jinni or jinn.6 This essay examines ideas and experiences of mental health prob- lems among Somali refugees in Sweden. It explores these issues from an anthropological perspective by emphasizing people’s own words about illness, healing, and well-being. In so doing, the article adds to the knowledge about how Somalis in the diaspora conceptualize and respond to mental illness. 73 Bildhaan Vol. 11 II. The probability of becoming hospitalized is high among Somalis, both compared to native Swedes and to other immigrants.8 Many also feel discriminated against, stigmatized, and unwanted in Swedish society; a situation that tends to lead to isolation and segrega- tion. -

(ii) SDMMARY The subject is the social structure of a southern Somali community of about six thousand people, the Geledi, in the pre-colonial period; and. the manner in which it has reacted to colonial and other modern influences. Part A deals with the pre-colonial situation. Section 1 deals with the historical background up to the nineteenth century, first giving the general geographic and ethnographic setting, to show what elements went to the making of this community, and then giving the Geledj's own account of their history and movement up to that time. Section 2 deals with the structure of the society during the nineteenth century. Successive chapters deal with the basic units and categories into which this community divided both itself and the others with which it was in contact; with their material culture; with economic life; with slavery, which is shown to have been at the foundation of the social order; with the political and legal structure; and with the conduct of war. The chapter on the examines the politico-religious office of the Sheikh or Sultan as the focal point of the community, and how under successive occupants of this position, the Geledi became the dominant power in this part of Somalia. Part B deals with colonial and post-colonial influences. After an outline of the history of Somalia since 1889, with special reference to Geledi, the changes in society brought about by those events are (iii) described. -

History, Overview, Trends and Issues in Major Somali Refugee Displacements in the Near Region (Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda and Yemen) Laura Hammond I. Introduction This paper was originally prepared for the High Level Panel on Somali Refugees convened by the High Commissioner for Refugees to take place in Geneva on 13 and 14 November 2013. The Panel is part of a Global Initiative the High Commissioner has launched to rally inter- national support for creative, meaningful and transformative solutions for Somali refugees. Intended to provide context and lay the ground for in-depth discus- sion by the Panel, the paper overviews the nature, trends and issues in Somali refugee displacement in the near region while also touching on the pertinent aspects of Somali refugee displacement in other parts of Africa, the Gulf and further afield. It provides a brief overview of the history and evolution of the estimated 500,000 Somali refugees in Kenya, 250,000 in Ethiopia, 260,000 in Yemen, 20,000 in Djibouti and 20,500 in Uganda while including pertinent information on internal displacement. The numbers are large but should not mask the hetero- geneity within each host country’s refugee population. Some refugees have been displaced for three generations; others are recent arrivals. Past actions in managing displacement and return in the region are reviewed and the conditions facing the Somali refugees examined. It becomes clear that varying solutions may have to be pursued for differ- ent groups and some situations may have more or fewer options than others. It is however not the purpose of the paper itself to reveal the new solutions. -

Somali Studies International Association 10th Triennial Conference at The Ohio State University August 16-18 2007 Page Welcome to the Somali Studies International Congress 30 Years Anniversary August 15-18, 2007 Dear Congress Participant: Welcome to the Somali Studies International Congress in what is a truly historic year for Somali scholarship and the premiere association created for that purpose. We are pleased to welcome you to the city of Columbus and the campus of the Ohio State University, and we are looking forward to four days of fellowship and scholarship. The 10th Triennial International Somali Congress will explore the reasons why the intersection between an endless politi- cal crisis and an unprecedented massive global dispersion, buttressed by high speed Internet and affordable communica- tion, has made Somalia a very different society than it was just a decade ago. The social transformations that resulted from these forces have challenged the traditional Somali ways in which individual, group, political, and social identities have been historically understood. One important challenge facing Somali Studies investigators and practitioners is how to critically propose new ways of understanding the social and economic impacts of globalization on Somali communities and, more important, how to describe and analyze the link between Somali Diasporas in Australia, Europe, and North America and those in homeland. Some of the critical issues that need immediate attention include analysis of the social and struc- tural barriers that Somali immigrants face as they attempt to assimilate and integrate into the social and economic fabric of their host communities. By focusing on these challenges, opportunities, and their implications, Somali Studies can suggest appropriate meth- odological and epistemological frameworks for critically understanding the link between transnational Somali communities and their politically contested homeland.
