Servant of the Lord

When my kids got into arguments, they often would get louder and louder, as if volume would win the day. We adults are known to do this too. There is a lot of shouting these days on our screens and in our streets. Much sound and fury is all about us, but not much conversion of hearts. The Baptism of the Lord, the start of the public , is striking: The Church desires us to reflect on Isaiah’s description of the “Servant of the Lord.” This foreshadows the Messiah. He is not a shouter or a showman. Isaiah’s servant does not talk about power and glory. He describes the servant’s quiet gentleness, one who does not break the bruised reed or quench the smoldering wick, who “establishes justice on the earth” (verse 4). Today we reflect on the loving kindness of our Messiah, in whom His Father was “well pleased.” Lord, help me to remember that winning a soul, not winning the argument, is what we are called to do. To Father Ulto and to all the good stewards of St.Bernadette, A 2020 Giving Tree Thank You! But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. (Matthew 6:34) I have many people to thank for the success of the 2020 Giving Tree Gift Card Ministry beginning with Fr.Victor Ulto whose guidance and confidence in me resulted in over 442 gift cards being distributed to six charities and 30 local families. Beautiful and heart felt messages written on Christmas Cards from you and your families to unknown friends brought tears to the people presented with the gift. Church members donated blank Christmas cards that were signed on behalf of the St Bernadette Church family when gift cards were donated without a card. Every gift card was placed inside a Christmas Card, and a lucky few received a hand made ornament included in their card. Santa has elves…and I had helpers as well. I offer my thanks to them: To all the stewards that separated the gift cards from the offerings, deposited in the same donation boxes, thank you! To Parish Office staff, April Laughlin and Judy Roensch who fielded phone inquiries, compiled the names and contact information of local families, and were available to receive donations which were walked into the office, thank you! To Merry Gasorek who assisted in the writing of blank Christmas cards, collating gift cards by denomination, the assembling of gift bags with cards for each of the six charities and who availed herself on Wednesday, December 16th to monitor distribution to local families, thank you! It is with a joyful heart I thank you, my St. Bernadette Parish Family, for your selfless and generous part in this ministry. You have allowed me to be a part of a present day It’s a Wonderful Life …for this my third year as chairperson. God Bless all of you! Ellen Hale, Facilitator 2020 Christmas Giving Tree Ministry
