Athens Journal of Architecture XY Mapping Inter and Transdisciplinary Relationships in Architecture: A First Approach to a Dictionary under Construction By Clara Germana Gonçalves Maria João Soares† This paper serves as part of the groundwork for the creation of a transdisciplinary dictionary of architecture that will be the result of inter and transdisciplinary research. The body of dictionary entries will be determined through the mapping of interrelating disciplines and concepts that emerge during said research. The aim is to create a dictionary whose entries derive from the scope of architecture as a discipline, some that may be not well defined in architecture but have full meanings in other disciplines. Or, even, define a hybrid disciplinary scope. As a first approach, the main entries – architecture and music, architecture and mathematics, architecture, music and mathematics, architecture and cosmology, architecture and dance, and architecture and cinema – incorporate secondary entries – harmony, matter and sound, full/void, organism and notation – for on the one hand these secondary entries present themselves as independent subjects (thought resulting from the main) and on the other they present themselves as paradigmatic representative concepts of a given conceptual context. It would also be of interest to see which concepts are the basis of each discipline and also those which, while not forming the basis, are essential to a discipline’s operationality. The discussion is focused in the context of history, the varying disciplinary interpretations, the differing implications those disciplinary interpretations have in the context of architecture, and the differing conceptual interpretations. The entries also make reference to important authors and studies in each specific case. -

Su Güvenir, 001129 ‐ 047 Abstract Links between music and mathematics is always been an important research topic ever. Serious attempts have been made to identify these links. Researches showed that relationships are much more stronger than it has been anticipated. This paper identifies these relationships between music and various fields of mathematics. In addition to these traditional mathematical investigations to the field of music, a new approach is presented: Patternist perspective. This new perspective yields new important insights into music theory. These insights are explained in a detailed way unraveling some interesting patterns in the chords and scales. The patterns in the underlying the chords are explained with the help of an abstract device named chord wheel which clearly helps to visualize the most essential relationships in the chord theory. After that, connections of music with some fields in mathematics, such as fibonacci numbers and set theory, are presented. Finally concluding that music is an abstraction of mathematics. Tacconi Professor of Musicology Assistant Director for Graduate Studies *Signatures are on file in the School of Music ii Abstract The intersection between music and architecture in the work of Iannis Xenakis (1922–2001) is practically inseparable due to his training as an architect, engineer, and composer. His music is unique and exciting because of the use of mathematics and logic in his compositional approach. In the 1960s, Xenakis began composing music that included spatial aspects—music in which movement is an integral part of the work. In this thesis, three of these early works, Eonta (1963–64), Terretektorh (1965–66), and Persephassa (1969), are considered for their spatial characteristics. Spatial sound refers to how we localize sound sources and perceive their movement in space. There are many factors that influence this perception, including dynamics, density, and timbre. Xenakis manipulates these musical parameters in order to write music that seems to move. In his compositions, there are two types of movement, physical and apparent. In Eonta, the brass players actually walk around on stage and modify the position of their instruments to create spatial effects. -

In music, articulation refers to the musical performance technique that affects the transition or continuity on a single note, or between multiple notes or sounds. Types of articulations There are many types of articulation, each with a different effect on how the note is played. In music notation articulation marks include the slur, phrase mark, staccato, staccatissimo, accent, sforzando, rinforzando, and legato. A different symbol, placed above or below the note (depending on its position on the staff), represents each articulation. Tenuto Hold the note in question its full length (or longer, with slight rubato), or play the note slightly louder. Marcato Indicates a short note, long chord, or medium passage to be played louder or more forcefully than surrounding music. Staccato Signifies a note of shortened duration Legato Indicates musical notes are to be played or sung smoothly and connected. Martelato Hammered or strongly marked Compound articulations[edit] Occasionally, articulations can be combined to create stylistically or technically correct sounds. For example, when staccato marks are combined with a slur, the result is portato, also known as articulated legato. Tenuto markings under a slur are called (for bowed strings) hook bows. This name is also less commonly applied to staccato or martellato (martelé) markings. Apagados (from the Spanish verb apagar, "to mute") refers to notes that are played dampened or "muted," without sustain. The term is written above or below the notes with a dotted or dashed line drawn to the end of the group of notes that are to be played dampened. -

Faculty of Education University of Cambridge October 2018 Music Learning and Mathematics Achievement: A Real-World Study in English Primary Schools Edel Marie Sanders Abstract This study examines the potential for music education to enhance children’s mathematical achievement and understanding. Psychological and neuroscientific research on the relationship between music and mathematics has grown considerably in recent years. Much of this, however, has been laboratory-based, short-term or small-scale research. The present study contributes to the literature by focusing on specific musical and mathematical elements, working principally through the medium of singing and setting the study in five primary schools over a full school year. Nearly 200 children aged seven to eight years, in six school classes, experienced structured weekly music lessons, congruent with English National Curriculum objectives for music but with specific foci. The quasi-experimental design employed two independent variable categories: musical focus (form, pitch relationships or rhythm) and mathematical teaching emphasis (implicit or explicit). In all other respects, lesson content was kept as constant as possible. Pretests and posttests in standardised behavioural measures of musical, spatial and mathematical thinking were administered to all children. Statistical analyses (two-way mixed ANOVAs) of student scores in these tests reveal positive significant gains in most comparisons over normative progress in mathematics for all musical emphases and both pedagogical conditions with slightly greater effects in the mathematically explicit lessons. -

The reconstruction is based on a study of both the score and the composer’s preparatory sketches to his composition. Akrata chronologically follows Herma for piano (1961) and precedes Nomos Alpha for cello (1965-1966). All three works fall within the “symbolic music” category. As such, they were composed under the constraint of having a temporal function unfold “algorithmically” the work’s “outside time” architecture into the “in time” domain. The system underlying Akrata, undergoes several mutations over the course of the music’s unfolding. In its last manifestation, it bears strong resemblances with the better known system later applied to the composition of Nomos Alpha. -

From Debussy to recent contemporary music, from rock’n’roll to electronica, the history of music has progressively and to some extent focused on the very foundation of music: sound. During this history —when, in some way, composition of sound takes the place of composition with sounds—, Xenakis plays a major role. Already from the 1950s, with orchestral pieces like Metastaseis (1953-54) or Pithoprakta (1955-56) and with electronic pieces like Diamorphoses (1957) or Concret PH (1958), he develops the idea of composition as composition-of-sound to such an extent that, if the expression was not already used for designating a new interdisciplinary artistic activity, we could characterize him as a “sound sculptor”. -

A Few Words on the Sounds of Glissando Harps The two harps making up Glissando Harps, Concert and Orchestral, were sampled in two very different venues, with different instruments, players, microphone and preamp setups. This was done on purpose. To put in your hands two complementary instruments, allowing for the best sound to fit many different composing scenarios. For Concert Harp we chose a small live room. For this reason when we set up for the next chapter, Glissando Orchestral Harp, we chose a studio, Sotto Il Mare Recording Studios (near Verona in Italy), famous for their wonderful analog equipment and a resounding live room. This setup allowed us to capture more microphone perspectives than we had for Glissando Concert Harp. So, to sum up: Glissando Harps Glissando Concert Harp Small recording venue, best fit for intimate or in-your-face kind of parts; also good for characterization with additional reverbs and Efx. Three microphone channels: an AB stereo setup with a Schoeps CMC64 matched pair and a Mid-Side setup with Neumann M140 as mid and Royer R121 as side. Glissando Orchestral Harp Large recording venue, perfect when you need to position the harp in an orchestral scenario, both as accompanist and as a soloist. Eight microphone channels, combined in five “movie-city-named” nki instruments. An LCR (wide AB + central mono) with Schopes CMC64 and Soundelux U195, the mono Soundelux U195 by itself, another wide AB with ribbon AEA N22 matched pair. -

A salient feature of Iannis Xenakis’ compositional practices was the use of several concepts and techniques borrowed from architectural design and from scientific fields. He sometimes drew complete graphic scores preluding the transcription of his fair copy of conventional musical notation. I discuss the diagrammatical features of Xenakis’ graphic score for Syrmos: although disparate representations depend on shared image schemata and cross-modal correspondences, their respective compositional logics are dissimilar. Keywords: Science-based composition · Sketch studies · Cross-modal correspondences · Material anchors · Iannis Xenakis 1 Introduction In Syrmos, a piece for string orchestra for eighteen players, Iannis Xenakis achieved a synthesis between compositional perspectives he developed during the 1950s. He implemented extra-musical ideas in compositional processes mainly borrowed from architectural design, mathematics, and physics. When playing Syrmos, the musicians and the conductor are supposed to read a score with standard notation on their respective music stands. A first and diagrammatic version of Syrmos is kept in the composer’s archives. It was written on graph paper in order to transcribe the data it contains as accurately as possible. Among its numerous pages, one of them displays a kind of hyperbolic envelope surrounded by a seemingly unpatterned cluster made of little crosses (see Fig. 1). Henceforth, I will only focus on this page, as a paradigmatic case in which both graphical elements, line segments and dots, are confronted. I will prove that, although both elements are immersed in the same diagrammatical space and share therefore common features, their underlying compositional logics are quite different. -
