LAKES IN RELATION TO GEOLOGICAL FEATURES 505 Eilean Subhainn, is U-shaped, the deepest portion occurring where the valley is most constricted, between Ben Slioch (3217 feet) on the north and Meall a' Ghubhais (2882 feet) on the south. Between Regoilachy and Coppachy the effect of a branch fault in weakening the strata is shown by the widening of the basin and the loop of the 250-ft. contour line in that portion of the lake. The Ardlair basin, beyond the islands, is a composite one. The north-west portion, north of Rudh' Aird an Anail, is situated in the line of the great shatter-belt, and is U-shaped; but the wider and deeper part of the same basin, lying between that promontory and Eilean Ruairidh M6r, is evidently due to the removal of comparatively weak strata, consisting of the lowest division of the Torridon Sand- stone, from the old floor of Lewisian Gneiss on which it was deposited. The Slattadale basin rests in Torridonian strata, belonging partly to the Applecross grits and partly to the weaker beds of the Diabaig group. A striking feature of this part of the lake is the number and size of the islands, which are composed mostly of massive Torridon sandstones and grits. One of these, Eilean Subhainn, contains a rock-basin 64 feet in depth. The river Ewe, which drains the loch, has cut a channel through the 'deposits of the 50-ft. raised beach, and runs for about half a mile over Torridonian strata before entering the sea. Loch Maree evidently extended farther up the valley, but it has been silted up by the streams that converge near Kinlochewe. -

Enjoy! CYCLING IN STEWARTRY This booklet is one of a series of four covering the whole of Dumfries & Galloway that suggest a variety of cycle tours for visitors and locals of all abilities. Local cycling enthusiasts, using their knowledge of the quieter roads, cycle routes and byways, have researched the routes to provide an interesting and rewarding taste of the region. A note of distance, time, terrain and facilities is given at the start of each route. All start points offer parking, toilets, snack places and accommodation. Some routes include stretches off-tarmac and this is indicated at the start of the route. Parking discs are required for some car parks and these are available at Tourist Information Centres and in local shops. Stewartry is part of the old province of Galloway. In those centuries when the easiest way to travel any distance was by sea, it held a strategic place on the west coast, Irish and Isle of Man routes. This explains the many archaeological remains near the coast. -

The National Nature Reserve covers the large area of open hill stretching from the Big Water of Fleet to the summit of Cairnsmore. The reserve is one of a suite of NNRs in Scotland. Scotland’s NNRs are special places for nature, where some of the best examples of Scotland’s wildlife are managed. Every NNR is carefully managed both for nature and for people, giving visitors the opportunity to experience our rich natural heritage. Cairnsmore of Fleet NNR offers a true taste of the Scottish uplands; it is one of the most southerly of the Galloway Hills standing above Wigtown Bay. At its heart it is one of the remotest parts of south-west Scotland. The moorland is dominated by an imposing granite hill, shaped and sculpted by the elements. The summit offers superb views over the Cree Estuary, and views south to the Lake District and the Isle of Man, west to Ireland and north to Ayrshire. -

GLENSHERO WIND FARM Environmental Impact Assessment Report 2018 Volume 1: Non-Technical Summary Glenshero Wind Farm Environmental Impact Assessment Report Simec Wind One Ltd and RES Ltd 1 Introduction 1.1.1 SIMEC Wind One Ltd (the Applicant) has applied for consent1 to construct and operate a 39 turbine wind farm at a site located approximately 8 km west of the village of Laggan, in the Highlands (hereafter referred to as the proposed development) (Figure 1: Site Location). 1.1.2 The Environmental Impact Assessment Report (EIAR) has been prepared by RES Limited (RES) and Ramboll Environment and Health UK Limited (Ramboll) on behalf of the Applicant to accompany the application for consent. 1.2 Purpose of the Non-Technical Summary 1.2.1 The purpose of the EIAR is to report on the potential for significant environmental effects as a result of the proposed development, and to specify mitigation to avoid or reduce significant environmental effects. The EIAR comprises the following volumes: Volume 1: Non-Technical Summary (NTS); Volume 2: Main Report; Volume 3: Figures; and Volume 4: Technical Appendices. 1.2.2 Additional documents that will be submitted with this application include: Socio-economic & Tourism Impact Assessment; Planning Statement, which includes a Design and Access Statement (Appendix 3 of the Planning Statement); Pre-application Consultation Report; and Cover Letter, confirming deposit locations for the EIAR. 1.2.3 This document provides a Non-Technical Summary (NTS) of the EIAR. 1.2.4 The aim of the NTS is to summarise the content and main findings of the EIAR in a clear and concise manner to assist the public in understanding what the significant environmental effects of the proposed development are likely to be. -

Keywords Checklist, Finland, Diptera, Anthomyiidae Introduction The family Anthomyiidae is a large and taxonomically difficult group of flies that has for the same reason suffered from unstable taxonomy and nomenclature. A checklist of the anthomyiid species known from pre-war Finland was compiled by their leading regional specialist of calyptrate flies Lauri Tiensuu (1906−1980) and published in Frey et al. (1941). The Anthomyiidae were then not recognized as a separate family but combined with the fanniid and true muscid flies in a comprehensive Muscidae fam- ily equivalent of the present Muscoidea less Scathophagidae. Tiensuu’s list included confirmed records of 199 anthomyiid species classified in 41 genera and subgenera. No less than 34% of the species names and 58% of the genus-group names in that list are Copyright Verner Michelsen. -

A total of 1272 two-winged species that belong to 58 families has been reported from theVitosha Mt. The Tachinidae (208 species or 16.3%) and Cecidomyiidae (138 species or 10.8%) are the most numerous. The greatest number of species has been found in the mesophylic and xeromesophylic mixed forests belt (707 species or 55.6%) and in the northern part of the mountain (645 species or 50.7%). The established species belong to 83 areographical categories. The dipterous fauna can be divided into two main groups: 1) species with Mediterranean type of distribution (53 species or 4.2%) – more thermophilic and distributed mainly in the southern parts of the Palaearctic; seven species of southern type, distributed in the Palaearctic and beyond it, can be formally related to this group as well; 2) species with Palaearctic and Eurosiberian type of distribution (1219 species or 95.8%) – more cold-resistant and widely distributed in the Palaearctic; 247 species of northern type, distributed in the Palaearctic and beyond it, can be formally related to this group as well. The endemic species are 15 (1.2%). The distribution of the species according to the zoogeographical categories in the vegetation belts and the distribution of the zoogeographical categories in each belt are considered. The dipteran fauna of the Vitosha Mt. is compared to this of the Rila and Pirin Mountains.
