3 The 8100-561 Wireless Communication Package

The Palm® LifeDrive™ is the currently recommended PDA for wireless communication with the LI-8100. The Palm LifeDrive and C (discontinued) are the only brands of PDAs currently supported for use with the LI-8100.

The 8100-561 Wireless Communication Package includes the following:

● 8100-557 Palm LifeDrive™ (includes software installation CD, charger with AC cable, and and USB cable) ● 8100-552 Cisco Wireless Card ● 8100-558 RS-232 Serial Cable for Palm ● 8100-559 Palm Travel Charger ● Palm/LI-8100 Configuration Instruction Manual

4 Configuration Procedure

Introduction Before you start the configuration process, make sure the Palm LifeDrive is fully charged.

● Connect the Palm to the AC power cable (if you are outside the United States you may also need to use the Palm Travel Charger). Let it charge fully (this can take a few minutes to a few hours).

● When done charging the Palm LifeDrive, insert the Software Installation CD and follow the Palm software installation process.

● Next, take a few moments to familiarize yourself with the Palm LifeDrive, if you are not already.

Configuring the Serial Cable The RS-232 Serial Cable (p/n 8100-558) from PN Technologies requires that the Power_Out pin be turned ON before it will function with the LI-8100. A mini CD from PN Technologies is included with the cable, which contains a Palm application (PowerPro.prc) that must be loaded onto your LifeDrive. The Power_Out program that is installed can then be run to turn on the Power_Out pin. Follow these steps to configure the serial cable:

1. Click on the Windows Start menu and choose All Programs. Locate the group. Open the Palm Desktop program.

2. Click Quick Install on the sidebar. Click the Add button.

3. Insert the mini CD into your drive, if you haven’t done so already. In the Open dialog, locate the drive, and select the PowerPro.prc file. Click the Open button.

4. Click Done. Hotsync your Palm LifeDrive to add the application.

5. Go to the Home screen on the LifeDrive and start the Power_Out application. Tap the ON button. Click the Home button to exit the program. The serial cable is now configured to be used with the LI-8100.

Configuring the Palm To configure the Palm LifeDrive for use with the LI-8100, follow the steps below:

11 Troubleshooting

If you cannot establish a wireless network connection, check the following:

1. Are you using a Palm LifeDrive (or Tungsten C)? Other models of PDAs manufactured by Palm, or PDAs manufactured by other companies (i.e., HP, Sony etc) will not work.

2. Did you enter the Network Name correctly?

3. Verify instrument IP address is correct.

4. Verify Palm IP address is not the same as the instrument IP address.

5. Verify the network type is peer-to-peer ad-hoc, not access point.

6. Power the instrument off, make sure the wireless card is seated properly, and turn instrument back on.

7. Shorten the distance between the LI-8100 and Palm LifeDrive.

12 Enable “Encryption” Function

In order to communicate with other devices, the LI-8100 must be given a unique IP address, a net mask, network name, and channel. Optionally, data encryption can be enabled.

WEP (Wired Equivalent Policy) is an encryption standard built into 802.11b, and is supported by the LI-8100. If data encryption is enabled, the same 40-bit (5 character) key must be entered on all devices of the WLAN. The key is used for data encryption and decryption.

1. Connect the Palm LifeDrive to the LI-8100 via the RS-232 cables. Turn on the Palm LifeDrive. Tap the LI-8100 icon. Next, tap Connect by Serial. Wait while the “Status: Querying …” process is progressing. Wait a few seconds until the Instrument Status screen is filled.

2. Tap the top of the screen and select the 8100 menu. Select Instrument Settings. Tap “Network Parameters”. The Network Name and other parameters are already entered. The Security parameter reads DISABLED. Tap DISABLED. The Set Network Security screen appears. Tap the check box next to Enable Security. Similarly, check Change Encryption Key and enter a five-character word using the keypad. Tap Send. [Warning: You must choose a five-character word made of either letters, numbers, or a combination of both.] Next to Security it should now display ENABLED.

3. Press the Home key on the Palm LifeDrive. Turn the LI-8100 off and back on. Wait for the ready light to come on.

4. Scroll down the home screen of the Palm and tap the Prefs icon. Tap Network. Tap Details. Tap Wi-Fi Preferences. Tap Info. Tap Edit network. Tap and check the WEP Encryption field. A new line will appear named WEP Key. Tap the space next to it. The Network WEP Key screen appears. Next to Key Type, choose 40-bit ASCII. On the line below WEP Key(5 characters) enter the five-character Encryption Key you used in step 2 above. Tap OK. On the Edit Wi-Fi Network screen the WEP Key now reads Assigned. Tap OK. Tap Done three times in succession. Press the Home key on the Palm LifeDrive keypad.

5. You are now ready to use the Palm LifeDrive in encrypted mode.
