Acquisition Information These papers were donated to the NAA by Ann Dunham's daughter, Maya Soetoro-Ng, in 2011. Separated Materials Objects have been transferred to the Anthropology Collections department. For more information please contact the department at 301.238.1340. Processing Information Prior to their arrival at the National Anthropological Archives (NAA) in 2011, the S. Ann Dunham papers were provisionally processed by Bronwen Solyom, a librarian at the University of Hawaii, Manoa and friend of Ann Dunham's, with the help of volunteers. Solyom re-housed and labeled the majority of the materials in archival folders and sorted, re-housed, and labeled photographs and negatives in mylar sleeves. Solyom had proof sheets printed for some of the negatives and slides. A preliminary arrangement was determined during this phase of processing as, other than the field notebooks, the materials had very little intrinsic order created by Dunham. Upon arrival at the NAA, the archivist re-boxed all the material, re-housed slides, some photographs, and oversized items, removed plastic bindings and deconstructed the spiral notebooks, removed and copied post it notes, removed rusty fasteners, and interleaved newspaper clippings and other highly acidic materials. The existing folder description was edited for consistency and dates were determined and added to the description where necessary. The series delineations and order determined by Solyom were minimally rearranged and streamlined

Stanley Ann Dunham was an anthropologist who worked primarily in Indonesia conducting research for her PhD in economic anthropology while also building a professional career as an international consultant with various non-governmental organizations. Born in 1942 in Kansas, Dunham attended high school in Mercer Island, WA and moved to Honolulu, HI with her family. She attended the University of Hawaii at Manoa where she received her BA in 1967, her MA in 1975, and her PhD in 1992, all in anthropology. Dunham's research and work dealt mostly with Indonesian handicrafts and small non-argricultural rural industries, including the study of economic and technical aspects that were important to enabling and sustaining development and village level microfinance programs. Her dissertation Peasant Blacksmithing in Indonesia: Surviving Against all Odds was completed in 1992. The first half of her dissertation was published posthumously in 2009. Dunham is the mother of President Barack Obama. She died on November 7, 1995 in Honolulu, Hawaii. (Chronology courtesy of the Ann Dunham Chronology by Ellen Chapman, S. The S. Ann Dunham papers, 1965-2013, primarily document her work as an economic anthropologist in Indonesia. The papers include her dissertation research on blacksmithing and materials relating to her professional work as a consultant for organizations like the Ford Foundation and Bank Raykat Indonesia (BRI). Her work included projects on microcredit, women in development, and rural industries. Materials consist of field notebooks, correspondence, reports, research proposals, case studies, surveys, lectures, photographs, research files, and floppy disks. The field notebooks are mostly written in English, but also contain a mixture of Indonesian and Javanese, and include notes from her years of fieldwork in central Java, work-related travel, experiences as a consultant, and notes on readings. The bulk of the professional materials relate to Dunham's work at the Ford Foundation as Program Officer for Women and Employment in Jakarta from 1981-1984. Her work with the Provincial Development Program in the Indonesian Department of Industries, a consultancy in Pakistan, at Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI), and at Women's World Banking are represented to a lesser degree. Academic materials primarily deal with Dunham's work toward her PhD, including her comprehensive exams and her dissertation. The personal and biographical materials include limited material regarding her son, President Barack Obama, and a comprehensive collection of her resumes and qualifications. The bulk of the photographs relate to Dunham's early field research for dissertation, and subsequently her work as a consultant. Materials related to Dunham's computer files from 1991-1995 includes floppy disks, inventories, copies of floppy disks on CDs with content lists, and printouts of selected documents. They include final versions of her dissertation and files relating to her work with Women's World Banking and DAI (Development Alternatives Incorporated). The floppy disks and CD-roms are unavailable for research. The printed inventories, content lists, and documents are available. The reference and research materials were collected by Dunham over the course of her career and studies. A bibliography of the majority of the reference and research materials is filed with the materials. The collected materials about S. Ann Dunham comprise files posthumously collected by Bronwen Solyom about Dunham and her legacy. These include academic files, publication files, biographical material, and files relating to the recognition of Dunham and her work.

1.67 Linear feet Arrangement: The notebooks were numbered by Dunham in various sequences, roughly chronological. Scope and This series consists of Ann Dunham's field notebooks dated 1977-1994. The content Contents: includes notes from her years of fieldwork in central Java; notes on some of her work- related travel, including Pakistan; experiences as a consultant, including her market potential surveys for the World Bank; and notes on readings. The earliest field notes were written up at the end of the day, primarily in English, as Dunham was learning Indonesian and Javanese languages with the help of her research assistants. The later field notes were written directly as she interviewed in the field, recording the answers to questionnaires, often in a mixture of Indonesian, Javanese, and English.

2.2: Provincial development program, 1980, undated Scope and This subseries comprises materials related to Dunham's work as a consultant to the Contents: Provincial Development Program in the Indonesian Department of Industries, October 1978 to December 1980. Items include a speech, a report, and various maps. The program was based in Semarang and funded by USAID. Dunham worked primarily on a pilot credit scheme for small rural industries, but was also involved with other projects including training field workers, baseline research on cottage industries and non-farm employment, poor rural women, and technology.

2.3: Lectures, 1980-1989 Scope and This subseries consists of lectures Dunham gave professionally, in front of classes, and to Contents: several cultural and academic organizations from 1980-1989. This includes lectures she gave at the Ganesha Museum Volunteer Society at the National Museum of Jakarta. Dunham became a founding member of the Society in 1968 and, when in Jakarta, lectured on topics relating to Southeast Asian material culture and archaeology until 1993.

As Consultant for Cottage Industry Development with Louis Berger International Inc., she served two terms in the Punjab, from May to November 1986 and from August to November 1987, working for an Agricultural Development Bank of Pakistan (ADBP) pilot credit scheme targeting the poorest groups in rural society, landless and near-landless living from non- farm income.

2.5: Banking, 1988-1994 Arrangement: The Bank Rakyat Indonesia materials appear first in alphabetical order. The Women's World Banking material is filed at the end of the series. Scope and This subseries documents Dunham's work at the Bank Rakyat Indonesia and at Women's Contents: World Banking from 1988-1994. Materials include reports, case studies, and surveys. Dunham worked for Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI), the Peoples Bank of Indonesia, between 1988 and 1992 on short-term consultancies funded by the World Bank. She was associated with the Harvard Institute for International Development that advised the Minister of Finance and BRI. Dunham managed and supervised research in seven Indonesian provinces on BRI's rural banking programs, from development of design strategies to presentation of final recommendations. She was involved at a critical period when BRI's failing government- subsidized rural credit program for rice farmers (known as BIMAS) had been discontinued,

and was being replaced by a rapidly expanding unsubsidized commercial microfinance operation made widely available to a variety of rural and then more general borrowers. It became very successful. Through market potential surveys (MARPOTSU) and arrears studies, Dunham obtained data that supported her argument for replicating and expanding the program to a wider range of small borrowers than at first envisioned, and to understanding and reducing the rate of arrears in loan repayments. She worked at Woman's World Banking in New York as Research and Policy Coordinator from February 1993 to mid-1994. There are very few hardcopy papers from this period as much of the material relating to her work was saved on floppy disks.

Scope and This series comprises material related to Ann Dunham's academic work, dated 1973-1992. Contents: The material primarily deals with her graduate work including reading lists and examination questions for her comprehensive exams, and reports, interviews, notes, proposals, drafts, and correspondence regarding her dissertation. Dunham began her PhD program in 1978. After dropping out of school, Dunham was readmitted in 1984 and completed her comprehensive examinations in 1986. It took her 14 years to complete her dissertation. She carried out intensive field research in 1978–79 with support of an East-West Center scholarship, after which she continued the research sporadically, while working to support her children and pay for their education. During this time, the scope of the dissertation was narrowed from a study of five non- agricultural rural industries in Central Java, to a single industry, blacksmithing, focused on Kajar village. This series includes documents relating to her early dissertation work as she was planning her research and defining its scope. It includes a field study proposal, an outline, a draft of Chapter 1, compilations of information on Kajar, notes for blacksmithing and metalworking glossaries, and statistics on metal working industries. The series also includes her later correspondence with her dissertation committee, a revised dissertation outline, and drafts of near final chapters and the table of contents. In addition, this series includes miscellaneous writings by Dunham, primarily on topics related to Indonesia.

Scope and This series contains material related to Ann Dunham's computer files and includes 100 Contents: floppy disks, dated 1991-1995, and materials derived from the floppy disks by Bronwen Solyom and volunteers, dated 2008-2012. Derived materials include copies of floppy disks on CDs, content lists, inventories, and printouts of selected documents. The documents include: (1) the last versions of AD's dissertation (PhD awarded 1992) and her notes for her planned book on blacksmithing; and (2) materials relating to her work with Women's World Banking (1993–94) and DAI (Development Alternatives Incorporated) (1994), many of which do not exist in hard copy. Some of the floppy disks are labeled more completely than others, some numbered and/or dated, some are not. They fall into three categories: 38 dissertation-related diskettes, and 57 work-related diskettes (with a small amount of personal material in both), plus five diskettes in a box labeled "Ann 1995." Most of the documents were saved as WordPerfect files and a few documents are in an early version of PowerPoint. The floppy disks and CD-roms are unavailable for research due to preservation concerns. The printed inventories, content lists, and documents are open for research.

The clippings include primarily Indonesian articles on a wide range of topics of personal and professional interest. The maps are related to Dunham's research, work, and the places she lived. The reading notes include her summaries and critiques of what she read. The sources (filed A-Z) include approximately 300 titles and include journal articles, chapters in books, conference papers, working papers, and other gray literature. Topics include labor, poverty, women in development, agriculture and sustainability, small businesses and microfinance, population growth and migration, and other aspects of economic anthropology. A bibliography of these titles was compiled with the assistance of volunteers from the Hawaii student chapter of the Society of American Archivists, Library and Information Science Program, University of Hawaii at Manoa, 2011-2012. A copy of the bibliography is filed with these materials. The blacksmithing sources include three comb-bound sourcebooks containing photocopies of articles and selected pages from books on three different aspects of the subject— archaeology, history and ethnography, and art history.

Scope and Series 8 comprises posthumously collected materials about Ann Dunham and her legacy. Contents: This includes academic files, publication files, biographical material, and files relating to the posthumous recognition of Dunham and her work. Material types include correspondence, ephemera, lectures, articles, and references. The materials from Alice Dewey consist of personal letters Dunham wrote to Dewey, files kept by Dewey as her academic advisor, and Dewey's record of interviews she has given and other work she has done to perpetuate Ann Dunham's memory. The dissertation files are primarily related to the publication of the first half of Dunham's dissertation, Surviving against the Odds: Village Industry in Indonesia, in 2009. Edited by Alice Dewey and Nancy Cooper, it focused on the economic and development aspects of the blacksmithing industry. As of 2011, Dewey and Cooper have begun editing the second book concerning the archaeology and ethnography of blacksmithing in Indonesia. There are also files regarding an Indonesian translation. The supplemental and information files were primarily collected by Dunham's friend and colleague Bronwen Solyom regarding articles, books, and conferences about Dunham, with particular emphasis on Hawaii and the recognition accorded Dunham by the East-West Center and the University of Hawaii. In addition, these series include a bibliography of Dunham's writings, files on awards and honors, and chronologies of her life and activities. Also included is a limited edition book from 2010 about the family of Dunham's second husband, Lolo Soetoro, donated by Maya Soetoro-Ng.
