Preface In 1999, the Institute of Geology of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic represented a consolidated scientific body, efficiently working in a wide scope of geological and related sciences. A great number of scientific staff of the Institute obtained research grants from national and international grant agencies in the past 2 years. Also the collaboration with industrial companies increased in its in- tensity, allowing to obtain additional funds for research and for the presentation of results on national and international symposia. Another phase of reconstruction of laboratories belonging to the Department of Endogenic Geology and Geochemistry and to the Department of Palaeontology and Stratigraphy was finished. Some new equipment has been installed, such as the system for fission track analyses composed of AXIOPLAN ZEISS Microscope and 452110 AUTOSCAN Trackscan system, supplementary devices for the MA- VACS demagnetiser, and Želba crusher. Two Institute scientists were awarded prestigious prizes of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Re- public for their life achievements in respective sciences: Ing. Miroslav Krs, CSc. was awarded the Pošepný Medal for achievements in geological sciences, and RNDr. Vojen Ložek, DrSc. was awarded the Mendel Medal for achievements in biological sciences. M. Krs is a world-known specialist in pa- laeomagnetism and a founder of this discipline in the former Czechoslovakia. V. Ložek is a leading specialist in modern and fossil Cenozoic molluscs, Quaternary stratigraphy and palaeoecology. Both of our colleagues are congratulated. Dr hab. Pavel Bosák, PhD. Director of the Institute 2. General Information The Institute of Geology of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic (abbr. GLI AS CR) was founded in 1961. It concentrates on research activities in the principal branches of geological sciences. Major research areas especially developed in the Institute are as follows: - Petrology and geochemistry of igneous and metamorphic rocks - Lithostratigraphy of crystalline complexes - Volcanology and volcanostratigraphy - Structural geology and tectonics - Palaeogeography - Terrane identification - Taxonomy and phylogeny of fossil organisms - Palaeobiogeography of Variscan Europe - Palaeoecology (incl. population dynamics, bioevents) - Palaeoclimatology as evidenced by fossil organisms and communities - Biostratigraphy and high-resolution stratigraphy - Basin analysis and sequence stratigraphy - Exogenic geochemistry - Quaternary geology and landscape evolution - Palaeomagnetism - Magnetostratigraphy - Petromagnetism The research potential of the Institute is divided into 6 units: Scientific departments 1. Jiří Filip) The scientific concept of the Institute of Geology and the evaluation of its results lie within the respon- sibility of the Scientific Council that includes both the internal and external members. Besides research, staff members of the Institute are involved in lecturing at universities and in the postgraduate education system. This work presents results of two years collecting efforts within the project “The role of the alpine karst area in Bulgaria as reservoir of species diversity”. It summarizes distribution data of 44 terrestrial gastropods from the Bulgarian part of Alibotush Mts. Twenty-seven species are newly recorded from the Alibotush Mts., 13 were con- firmed, while 4 species, previously known from the literature, were not found. In the gastropod fauna of Alibotush Mts. predominate species from Mediterranean zoogeographic complex. A large part of them is endemic species, and this demonstrates the high conservation value of large limestone areas in respect of terrestrial gastropods. První koncentrace představovala kůlové jamky, které na základě vzájemných prostorových vztahů a analogií interpretu- jeme jako zbytek kůlového domu, přičemž lze uvažovat o jeho dataci do doby bronzové. Druhou kon- centrací archeologických situací byl pozůstatek kruhového žlabu o průměru 10–12 m vyplněného velký- mi kameny, snad pozůstatkem kamenného věnce. Ty nebyly na původním místě usazení zřejmě vlivem předchozí orby. Plocha uvnitř věnce byla vyplněna zeminou tmavšího charakteru a dvěma koncentra- cemi kamenů. Vzhledem k nízké mocnosti ornice a aktivnímu zemědělskému využití v místě skrývky bylo narušení objektu patrno i v charakteru nálezů. Podle typologie objektu a získaného keramického materiálu můžeme pravděpodobně hovořit o pozůstatku mohyly zařaditelné snad do doby bronzové. Vzájemnou souvislost kůlového domu a mohyly nelze prokázat. Spolu s jinými příklady z poslední doby tak nález přispívá k problematice „zmizelých“ rozoraných mohylníků ve středních Čechách.
